THE MORNING-' OREGONIAN, SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 24, 1917. HID E LIST l! MENS Market Reacts From Advance y Recently Made. TANNERS CEASE TO BUY Local Quotations Are Unchanged, but Throughout East Sales Are lteported at Declines and Buy ers Disposed to Hold Off. The hide market has had a backset alter the rather sharp advance of three weeks ago. With prices in the East decllnlns. local dealers find it Impossible to make sales to tanners. Prices in this market have not eeen reduced yet and will hold good until the end ot the month, but under the cir cumstances the dealers are not keen to buy. - Throughout the East the hide markets am . V. - t ... s11 lines with certain varieties weaker and ales made at declines, Domestlo country bides, which have been slow for a consid erable period, have slumped in price in the Eastern market, and according to advices irora Chicago the dealers there do not ap pear adverse to seeing recession occur, as a drop enables them to buy la more ad vantageously at outside points and make ..deliveries on short sales formerly effected , en a higher basis at a good profit. The large tanners, however, are bearish and only inclined to purchase at declines. ' At any rate, buffs and 45-pound and up cows, after celling at 25c for current receipt short-haired stock, weakened materially and week pur chases were made of several thousand by one tanner from several different Chicago deal ers, down to 23c, selected. Other dealers, however, will not sell at this price. In the packer hide division in the big centers the market is dull and . uninterest ing, with no sales noted of any description. While former rates are quoted, packers are Jess independent than heretofore, not asking advances as formerly and welcoming bids. Heavyweight hides continue relatively strong er than lightweight stock, but the kill runs lieavy to light cattle, and, while the market was previously well sold up to date, the various lightweight description hides are "aid to be quickly accumulating. Under these conditions, an undercurrent of easiness Is being manifested, centering chiefly, of course, on lighter weight kinds. calfskins are in lessened demand In all ectlona East and West and also show weaker trend. The "general leather demand lias shown lessened activity, but the market for all de ecriptlons Is firm and stock suitable for Government work, particularly heavy sole, is Kept closely sold up all the time, while overweight bottom stock rules especially strong. No difficulty was experienced yesterday in sell ing No. 1 stock at 30 cents, but the price of culls had to be cut sharply to move them, many being sold as low as 22 to 23 cents. If the receipts continue to show such a large proportion of half-fed turkeys, the price of choice turkeys can hardly escape being affected. The off-grade stock must Other Wa!I-Street StOCrxS ShOW W BVIU J. lI W Ual I L. Wilt Ut Ulfil . aw in condition to put into storage. Many farmers have no doubt withheld grain from their turkeys, owing; to the high feeding cost. Poultry men eay they would do bet ter to hold the turkeys back and put some fat on them for Christmas. There was a good demand for live hens. Springs, ducks and geese at firm prices. Dressed meats were in moderate supply. Veal was firmer and pork was steady. There were no new developments tn the egg or butter markets. ALL STOCK FEED IS ADVANCING RAILS HOLD BACK Tendency to Advance. STEELS RESIST PRESSURE Demand for Millfeed Grows as Coarse Cereals Go Higher. The uninterrupted advance in the feed grains is adding to the strength of and demand for millfeed. At the Merchants Exchange yesterday 100 tons of Dec em- shorts were sold at $36. the highest price of the season. Spot shorts are quoted by the' mills at $39 and bran at but the output is not equal to the demand, and In the trade it is expected higher prices will have to be announced soon. One hundred tons of December shipping barley were sold at the exchange at 454.50' and the same price was bid for immediate delivery, while feed barley offers were raised SO cents to (53 and $53.50. North western oats bids were raised 50 cents to $1, with (54 offered for December, and Eastern oats bids were advanced 25 to 75 cents. Corn bids were also higher. , The enlarged local demand Is the consequence of stronger markets East. Bradstreet's reports exports this week from North America of 4.817,000 bushels of wheat and 828.000 bushels of corn. The world's visible wheat supply last week was 79,310,000 bushels, against 207,- 620.000' bushels a year ago. NEW YORK, Nov. 23. Backwardness of rails, despite assurances that no strike will be called by the brotherhoods, was the out standing feature of today's moderate business on me btock Exchange. Other shares were disposed, after early hesitation, to supple ment advances of the midweek, but encoun tered occasional opposition. Trading was accompanied by frequent intervals of .ex treme dullness, but the monotony of the session was relieved by intermittent activity of pools in various specialties at gross gains of 2- to o points. Stable Industrials. Including eaulpments of the war division, again fluctuated within re stricted limits, but offered more resistance to pressure. United States Steel, for example, mounting steadily in the iast hour to US', a net gain or 1 points. Lackawanna Steel and Republic Iron were unusually active at extreme advances of 3 and 6fc points, respectively. lnauatrial Alconol, the motors, oils, to baccos, leathers, shippings and Western Union participated rather unevenly at gross gains of 1 to 5 points but shaded toward the close. Saies amounted to fllo. 000 shares. Call money was at its lowest rate of the week, declining from to 2a per cent for loans over the week-end on forecasts of favorable bank statement. Bonds were firm but dull. Liberty 4s changed hands at 97.58 to 98 and the 8Hs at 98.8S to 99.06. Total sales, par value, aggre gated $4,150,000. United States bonds, old is sues, were unchanged on call. CLOSING STOCK QUOTATIONS. Closing cattle and hogs: H. M. So miners, Hermlston, 1 car cattle and hogs. The day's sales were as follows: Wet. DEALERS NOT PLEASED Fixing: of Government Wool Price Xot Bel Ished by Traders. Commenting; on the plan inatjgrurated at Philadelphia to bring about a Federal wool valuation, the New York Journal of Com merce eay a: "Announcement, as to, the reception given by the Government to this proposition will be awaited with interest. In many quarters of the New York market the idea of con trol is not relished, not from its relation to profits, but because of the distortion and inequalities it is UKely to leaa to. The buy ing- of wools in a foreign market, for ex- ample Is made impossible In cases where such a market may be -higher than the fixed valuation. The condition is evident in England in a recent mall report dated November 1, to the effect that factors there could not buy Punta Arenas because they were too high in South America to permit getting the buyers money back when landed."
