An Item appearing In The Oreg-onlan, which announced the final total of the eoldiers' And sailors' Christmas fund to be $7950, although the committee had striven to attain a total of 18000, brought an unexpected response yes terday In the form of a $50 check. The check came In a letter to Mrs. Ferdinand E. Reed, who served as chairman of the tag day drive, and was from Charles Eckelman, president of the Riverview Dairy Company, y "If $50 is all you need to reach the froal. here it is," was the substance of the communication. Having reached, the coveted total, the fund was further increased by two silver quarters brought in by Mrs. H. F. Johnson, who explained that the sale of two tags, taken from coat lapels, had been made by a grocer, of German birth, after the close of the drive. The final check, handed to Lewis A. Mc Arthur. of the Red Cross, completes the fund, with a total of $8000.50. Aviation Commissions Expected. ABERDEEX. Wash., Nov. 23. (Spe cial.) FAMILY APART -35 YEARS Brother and' Sister of Mrs. Iv. Hayes Come From Afar. There was a happy family reunion at the Hayes home at 30 East Couch street this week when- Mrs. K. Hayes' sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Smith, who has been in Alaska for 18 years, and whom she has not seen for 85 years, came to Portland for a brief stay. That was not all of the reunion, however, because J. Kennedy, a brother, whom Mrs. Hayes had not seen for 35 years, also came to Portland. Mrs. Hayes originally came from i Vermont. Her husband, K. Hayes served with the Second Missouri Engineers in the Civil War. It was after the war that they were married and crossed the plains 63 years ago and settled in Mexico and later in Oregon. She had not heard of any of her family since until recently she heard her brother was in Missouri and her sister in Alaska. Then she wrote asking that they come to Portland, This resulted In the reunion. Mrs. Smith has extensive mine In terests in Candle. Alaska, which is $50 miles north of Nome. She is the owner of the only hotel in town. Reeds, flax bolls and dried potato peelings are being used in Holland for eattle food. High prices are demanded and request has been made to the gov ernment to regulate the sale of these supplies and relieve the situation. DEATH DUE TO PULLEY Details of Morton Accident. Gathered tj Deduction. " MORTON, Wash., Nov. 23. (Special.) Details of the accident that caused the, death. Wednesday, of C. O. Smith, manager of the Lewis County Light & Telephone Company, will never be known. About noon that day the electric cur rent suddenly went down. Inquiry was made as to when the current would be turned on again, to which the answer was given that Mr. Smith was fixing a pulley and that it would take only a few minutes. Those using the current in the daytime waited for some time and then inquiry was made again as to when the power would be turned on. This time patrons were informed that Mr. Smith could not be reached. So Mrs. Smith went to the plant and found the body. Evidently Mr. Smith was caught In the pulley. Mr. and Mrs. Smith came to Morton about three years ago and bought the power plant from F. M. Broadbent. Later they leased and then contracted to buy the Rural Telephone Company property, and then combined the two under the firm name of Lewis County Light & Telephone Company.
