L . Attended by Soldiers, Officer
V and Civilians.
Soldiers and officers, civilians and
patriotic representatives of civic or
ganizations, as well as Consuls of for
eign countries, attended the private
thowlng of the motion picture, "Under
the Stars and Stripes," which was -an
Invitational affair, at the Hippodrome

The audience was the - largest - that

sion, and the picture was given gener
ous applause. The pictures show the
American Sammies iq. France, and bear
the authority of the Cinematographic
division of the French army. The
film was released in the United States
through the Fathe exchange.
The film shows General Pershing's
troops on the western battle front and
gives realistic pictures of the Sam
mies at work, at play and pursuing the
various activities incidental to training
in the trenches.

Annual Sessions Will Be Held In Con
Junction With Grand Army En.
campment, Bringing 30,000.
The Sons of. Veterans and the allied
branch, Daughters of Veterans, are
taking active steps in the arrangements
for the proper entertainment of the
Grand Army of the Republic, which
holds its National encampment in Fort
land next Summer. Colonel Charles L.
Chamberlin, division commander of the
Washington, Oregon, Alaska division,
has already been here and started the
organization of the Sons, and word has
just been received from Mrs. Edith E.
Harris, department . president of . the
Daughters of Veterans, to the effect
that a charter will soon be opened for
local tents in Portland. All daughters
and granddaughters of veterans are
eligible to membership.
The local Sons of Veterans have or
ganized a camp known as Owen Sum
mers Camp, No. i, and are holding-
. ....uiig Lneir own num
ber under the direction and tutelage of
Professor Todd, formerly an instructor
in a Virginia school for boys.
It Is proposed to hold the-annual
meeting of all allied societies of the
Grand Army of the Republic at or about
the same time as the national encamp
ment of the Grand Army of the Repub
lic, and indications are that Portland
will have nearly 80,000 visitors at that
time. All persons eligible to either the
Sons of Veterans or Daughters of Vet
erans can sign the charter roll either at
the Grand Army of the Republic head
quarters, 575 Courthouse, or at the of
fice of C. J. Schnabel, 600 Chamber of

PAHft PAY IS INKED
COUXCII BOOSTS WAGES OF CITY
EMPLOYES.
All of Municipality's Laborers to Get
25 Cents a Day More Firemen, Po
licemen, Certain to Obtain Rise.
Laborers In the city service r to
receive an increase of 25 cents a day.
Decision to this effect was made yes
terday by the City Council when it
started in on the budget of appropria
tions for next year. Park laborers,
first of those considered at the budget
session, were granted the Increase, ef
fective December 1.
The 25 cents added to the laborers
wage will make It 13.25 a day in place
of 3, the wage for all laborers for
several years, past. Park, gardeners
were Increased from $3.50 to $3.75 a
day: assistant park helpers from $3.25
to $3.50 a day, truck drivers from $3
to $3.50, the keeper at Benson Park
from $i0 to $100 a muntn, park keep
ers from $3.25 to $3.50, and comfort
station attendants from $2.50 to $2.75
a day.
In view of the elimination of the
position of engineer from the Park
Bureau at a salary of $185 a month,
the Council authorized the increasing
of the salary of Park Superintendent
to $200 a month from $175. James
Ccnvill, Park Superintendent. will
hold the position If he returns from
the Presidio, where he is training now
for the Army. If he fails to return
Assistant Superintendent Keyser, who
holds the position, will remain. Mr.
Keyser heretofore has held the posi
tion of park engineer. If Mr. Convill
returns Mr. Keyser will accept a Fed
eral position which has been offered
him. These outs and changes were
recommended by Mayor Baker, who
has charge of the Park Bureau.
The Council's attitude at yesterday's
session, indicated that laborers
throughout the service will receive an
increase of 25 cents a day In pay,
commencing December 1. It is certain,
that firemen and policemen will be
increased and other employes receiv
ing from $60 to $110 a month may get
a little more. For men above that,
the quesTion of increase is still open,
with their chances slight, owing to the
financial difficulties facing the city.
. The Council, after disposing of part
of the Park Bureau budget yesterday,
adjourned to Monday morning at 10
o'clock for another session. Fifteen
days remain for the completion of the
budget.
