Better than ever, is grand opera frh the Public Auditorium. There were two opera treats pre sented yesterday: "Lucia di Lammer moor" in the afternoon and "Thais" last night. The La Scala Grand Opera Company's Visit to this city is an opera triumph. In "Lucia," Nina Morgana, made a sensational hit as Lucia and the con sensus of opinion is that vocallv, tem peramentally and physically Morgana ts tne best Lucia we have ever had. hcott in the novel "The Bride of Lammermoor" and Iionizetti, who com posed the opera, both wrote and planned the heroine as a dainty, winsome, sen Umental bit of femininity. . "VVe have bad grenadier, determined, masculine women who loudly insisted that they were ideal Lucias. There was once an ultra-stout Lucia who waddled as she walked and who resembled nothing mo much as a sackful of flour tied in the middle, but not one of these women filled the bill. Morgana Made for Role. But Morgana, of slight physique. Is an Ideal Lucia. She is created for the part. Coming almost unheralded to this city, she has won it. One or two years ago Flie narrowly missed in New York City international fame in grand opera. The famous llamnierstein told his inti mate friends, those whom he called his "cabinet," that he had discovered in Morgana a Tetrazzini in the making. He gave her five years to equip . her self, vocally. But alas! the impresario got into legal difficulties, his opera plans went astray and Morgana had to wait. This Is why Morgana is known In the profession as the "llammerstein find" in prima donna. he trilled yesterday like a song bird. She sang with sweetness and volume up to high K in alt. lier singing in her middle and upper registers was even and uniform in clarity,, an astonishing event in vocalism. She sang finely the difficult, catchy music In the madscene, in which her soprano rivaled the sweetness oft he flute. Arensen Makes lilt. Andreas Arensen, the Swedish-Ttus-slan tenor robusto, made the best Kdgar heard in this city for years. He has a big, sparkling voice which he uses with good taste. Jvarl rorines made a manly, resolute Henry Ashton and sang mag nificently. The "Sextet" was famous ly sung. Manuel de Lara, the assistant con ductor, was conductor for "Lucia" and he was eminently successful. There were several enthusiastic recalls. Chemical Placed Jn Lake Doesn't Appear in Bull Hun River Mr. Dulin Opines Water Comes From Underground Hake. After all the years that Portland has boasted about Bull Run Lake as the wonderful and picturesque source of the city's water supply, there now comes a geologist, one R. S. Dulln. and questions whether the lake Is the source of supply. Mr. Dulin. who is connected with the Public Works Department, has Just re turned from a trip to the lake, where he made experiments to determine the possibility of regulating the supposed underground flow from the lake to Bull Run Ri-er. Mr. Dulin says, after a study of the rock formations and the manner In which Bull Run River rises from the earth a mile or more from the lake, he leans to the opinion that the source of supply is really a vast underground lake somewhere in the vicinity. Bull Run Lake, he says, may connect with this underground lake. It has been supposed that water seeps through the bed of a small lagoon In Bull Run Lake and flows under ground to the point where the river rises. A chemical coloring matter Fluorescln). one part of which will color millions of parts of water, was put in Bull Run Lake where the water is supposed to sink into under ground passages by Mr. Dulin. For hours the point where Bull Run River rises was watched, but no trace was seen of the coloring. Another party, working on the ex periment, will leave for the lake to day to try it again. Bull Run River, after rising once about a mile below Bull Run Lake. disappears underground again and rises a mile or so still further down Bull Run Canyon, where it comes out the second time the volume is twice as great as where it first comes out. Mr. Dulin says this gives weight to his theory. iiiiiMiiMiiiiuiinuuiiutiiiiiiuuuiuiiiuimiiiuiiiiuiiiuuiu;ti.uui.ai' A Tooth Brush That Will Hold Its Bristles 25c A tooth, brush that holds its bristles is the one that gives satisfaction.
