THE MORNING OKEGONIAN, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 4, 1917, NEW YARD ASSURED Ground Being Prepared for Ways at Columbia City. MACHINERY IS ORDERED International Shipbuilding Company Expected Soon to Have Work ou Several Wooden Vessels Well Under Way. Land leased at Columbia City for the recently formed International Ship building Company is beiits? graded for the building of ways, lumber has been delivered on the ground and machinery has been ordered, while it is under stood negotiations are under way for several wooden vessel contracts. Somiirstrom Bros. yard, near by, is well along, and as the firm has closed contracts for wooden steamers, con struction will be carried on during: the Winter. At the St. Helens Ship building Company's yard it was said yesterday that there were more than 5 men employed on Government steam ers building there, more workmen be ing added every few days, though the chip carpenters strike has prevented that company going ahead full tilt, as It has other plants. More business is being- placed here for auxiliary machinery for the new wooden fleet, some of whi'h is being turned out by the Hesse-Martin Iron j Works. The firm has moved into i tis new machine shop at Eighth and Tay- lor streets, where an entire block was j recently purchased. Work on other j shops of the plant is going ahead and ' by November 1 it is expected that all j the machinery will be moved from the ! old shop and a full crew engaged, i Among other work, the plant is turning! out 1 0 cranes for the Grant iSmith-Juthrie-Mcrougall yard at t. Johns, ; that order being nearly finished. At the Pacific Marine Iron Works, foot of East Main street, one of the most valuable additions to Portland's machine shop strength in the last year, it is reported that a full crew is work ing and headway on boilers and en gines for new steamers building here la expected to be rapid. The Parr-McCormiok Steamship Company, which has taken over the Hollywood Ship building Company, announced today that the company would construct four 5500-ton steamships for the Government at a cobl of $1,500,000 each. The company has op tions on building two additional ships. The Australian government has secured control of a number of ships to help in moving the wheat crop and some of the fleet will be sent to Pacific Coast ports. Balfour, Guthrie & Co. will act as agents for the Australian government in the oper ation of the fleet. COOS BAY. Or., Oct. 3. (special.) The gasoline schooner Rustler sailed for Rogue lilver this morning at S o'clock. Sailing today with a lumber cargo from the Buehner mill, the steam schooner Hardy will deliver at San Pedro. SEATTLE. Wash.. Oct 3. (Special.) The Sandstrom Shipbuilding Company, follow ing a complete reorganization ot its direc torate, today announced the taking of a con tract for the building of six wooden ves sels of over 3500 tons for Norwegian Inter ests. The vessels are for delivery, it "is un derstood, by July. 101 S, of course subject to Interruptions due to strikes. This yard is one of the several tied up by the existing strike over the 10-hour lumber question, and the officials declined to discuss this phase of the situation. In the organization of the Company, Herman SandBtrom is pres ident. James Rudd secretary and Will Sand trom treasurer. J. M, Farrell retires from the board. A large high -pressure area overlies the North Pacific States and Eritfnh Columbia; it is accompanied by clear skies and warmer weather, the temperatures beinir unusually high In Northern California and at San Fran cisco, where the thermometer registered 9n at 5 P. M.. the highest temperature ever recorded at that station during the month of September. The British Columbia disturb ance has moved eastward and is central this evening over Winnipeg. It has caused mod erate rains over Minnesota and the lakes region. , FORECASTS. Portland and vicinity Fair; northerly winds. Washington and Oregon Fair, continued warm: light northwesterly winds.
