BT JAMES J. RICHARDSON. If rain does not prevent the Beavers will entertain George Stovall and the Vernon Tigers in a seven-same series this week starting- today at 3 o'clock. The Vernon club made a miserable showinr against Los Angeles in the Southern city, laat week, dropping; five of the seven games played. The last time the Beavers and Tigers played at Los Angeles the Mackmen took seven out of nine games played. If the Portland pitchers bold up as well against Vernon as they did against the lowly Oaks the Beavers ought to take the series by a big margin. Stovall and his crew will not arrive until 1:50 o'clock this afternoon coming north on the Shasta Limited direct from Los Angeles. The long ride will not do them any food from a playing standpoint. Manager McCredie is well pleased with the showing the Beavers made last week and hopes to keep the boys from the "Jinx" which settles upon the Beavers every time they start to climb. The usual lineup will face the Tigers today. McCredie announced last night that Pinelli was in great shape and that he would soon be back in the lineup. Pinelli was spiked while the Beavers were on their last road trip and broke up what McCredie termed the "best infield the Portland club ever had." "I have to use Pinelli next season and I'm going- to put him in there sometime this week or next' said the Beaver boss. "He Is one of the most promising ballplayers I have seen. He played a wonderful bang-up game for us until he was injured and I have been giving him a good layoff. He will be our regular third-sacker next sea son so he might Just as well start now. "Losing Hollocher will break up my infield, buf I will have several young sters to try out for an infield job. I'm off the veterans from now on. I would rather manage a club composed en tirely of youngsters who were out there fighting all the time and finish In the second division than to be at the head of a bunch of veterans who were out there loafing and trying to "I am going to keep Lee and give htm a thorough trial next Spring. He has all the marks of a wonderful ball player. He is the fastest man in the league today. Ha hasn't been in a pame outside of the two he worked for me for the last two months, but he looks good to me. He can throw and field and I might make an outfielder out of him on account of his speed. He looks a trifle weak on curve balls, but all youngsters do when they first break in. In the bushes they feed them nothing but fast ones, so it will take him a little while to get his batting eye. "Siglin is the classfest second base man in the league. I never saw a fellow who can go get them better than Paddy. His heart and soul . is wrapped up In his work. Watch him when he gets to know what kind of a ball to pick out when he steps up there to hit. That's his weakness. I have a youngster named Arm strong who has a nice reputation in California and also three or four other youngsters lined up to try out for a job. His quiet manner and wonder ful ability as a player have made him a great favorite, not only with Port land fans, but also with fans in other cities comprising the Coast League. Inter-Reglmeatal Games Scheduled f r Both Officers nnd En listed Men. CAMP LEWIS, Wash., Sept. 24. (Special.) The officers of the 362d Regiment started regular football practice yesterday afternoon. Lieu tenant-Colonel Jordan, who Is in com mand of the regiment, is enthusiastic1 about regimental athletics. He is an old Multnomah Club member and foot ball player. Lieutenant Thomas Ever ett May. former coach and manager of athletics at Oregon Agricultural Col lege, has been put in charge of the squad. A wonderful team is expected, as Coach May will have some of the best football talent in the camp. A series of lnter-reglmental games is being scheduled for both officers and en listed men. Coach May gave out a tentative lineup of his team, which will probably meet the Naval Militia from Seattle In the stadium at Yacoma on Thanksgiving day: Center. Earny Vosper, former Lin coln High performer, has joined the field ambulance corps of the Twenty eighth Infantry, Second Brigade. This adds another star to Captain Bartlet's football aggregation. The team will be composed almost entirely of former Oregon stars. Vosper was an Inter collegiate end in football and forward in basketball while at Lincoln High. SHEEHY MAKES GOOD RECORD University of Oregon Boy Hits .3 65 With Klamath Falls. Jimmy Sheehy, the University of Ore gon star outfielder, arrived home last night from Klamath Falls, where he has been playing with the Klamath Falls baseball team during the vaca tion period. Sheehy 'enjoyed a good season with the willow and hit .865. Sheehy will remain in Portland for a visit with his parents until Thursday, when he will leave for the university. Kenneth Lilly, of the Stanford Uni versity nine, accompanied Sheehy north and will leave for Palo Alto tonight. Lilly has played center field for Stan ford for the last two years and is re. garded as a good prospect for the Coast League. Albany Y. M. C. A. Plans League. ALBANY, Or., Sept. 24 (Special.) An indoor baseball league for games during the Winter is being formed in the Young Men's Christian Association here. Teams representing various Sun day schools of the city will compose the league. - Joe Jackson Declared Exempt. GREENVILLE, S. C, Sept. 24. Joe Jackson, the Chicago American League team's star batter, has received exemp tion from selective draft in the Na tional Army.
