I i QUICK CHANGES AMAZE OWES UPGITENEY, AT PAXTAGES, PLAYS MANY ROLES. Hired and Fired" Proves to Be Most Comedy and Patriotic Sons Are Applauded. Clever One of the cleverest protean artists on the American, or English' stage is Owen McGiveney, who is headlining a capital bill at Pantages this week, Mr. MaGiveney presents our ol. friend. Bill Bykes, with quick changet Into a half dozen characters ia a dra matic episode from the story of Oliver Twist. By turns he appears as the murder ous Bill, as poor old Nancy, as the wily Fagln, as the Artful Dodger and other characters. The amazing part of Mr. McGlveney's work is the rapid change he effects from one type to an other, and the genuine artistry with which he Invests each role. Bach stands out distinct and faultless in point of makeup and faithfulness to subject. The act created a real sensation at yesterday's matinee, and Mr. McGiveney said In a curtain speech later that the close attention given by the audience was the best compliment he could re ceive. Johnny O'Connor and Frank Dixon "lave a hilarious turn in their "Hired .nd Fired." One chap comes on to speak a piece, when the other, as of soap skidding across- the floor and so breaks Into the act. They kid and fool around with a stepladder and part of a. dress suit. Their singing is ex cellent and the audience demanded encores. " " Frank Morrell, the "California Boy," created a whirlwind of popularity for himself with his . Chauncey Olcott tenor, high soaring and sweet. He sang patriotic songs that roused enthusiasm and one or two popular melodies, all of them delightfully presented. A merry act is that of Claire and Atwood in an acrobatic nut act called "Bump de Bumps." Their comedy ad ventures are keen and new. Reeder and Armstrong, a pair of cheer-up chaps, open the bill with a pretentious piano-playing act. The closing act is of headline caliber, con sisting of a big colorful presentation scrub artist stagehand, follows a piece of the Six Venetian Gypsies In oper atic aria and in instrumental music of an unusual high order and artistic value. A new serial, "The Fatal Ring." fea turing Pearl White. Is beginning this week and is full of thrills and Interest. DR. E. J. LABBETO GO SOON Physicians Dine Associate Who Will Serve in France.
