THE 3IORNTXG OREGOXIAN, TUESDAY. JTCXT 10, 1917. 3 EMBRYO OFFICERS LEARN DISCIPLINE Eastern Candidates, Unac customed to Being Bossed, Yield to Army Rules. ' INFLUENCE IS DEMOCRATIC Sons of Famous Men Among Stu dents at Plattsbnrg Every Man Who Qualffles Is As sured Commission. BY LAMAR TOOZE. PLATTSBURGH BARRACKS. N. T.. July 9. (Special.) Two months of In tensive training- has changed the 6000 men at the Plattsburgh camp from a mass of novices to an organization of well-dlsclpllned soldiers. Those -who came here with the Idea that the camp afforded a desirable place. for a sum mer's vacation, those who have not taken the proper Interest In the work or those who, unfortunately. were found to be physically unfit, have been eliminated and the rest, who have qual ified for the finals, are buckling down tor the home stretch. The army discipline which every soldier In the new army must conform to will leave Its mark long after the allied flags float from the palace at Potsdam. It will be one of the finest and most permanent results of the war. Discipline la Strict. When the bugle sounds at 6:80 on week days you must get up. There's no alternative. Every man scrambles Into his uniform. Some have, become as proficient in dressing as a fire horse is in getting into his harness. Two minutes is the record in my com pany. The report is current that the post hospital is crowded Saturdays ana Sundays with patients who find there a place to redeem lost sleep. The imbibing of even the lightest alcoholic drinks Is sufficient ground for summary dismissal. This order hit some of "the men pretty hard at first, but most of them now agree that they are better off without their customary "nips." The food, while plain, is well cooked and wholesome. Camps Are Democratic. Besides the discipline, another Inter eating feature of the military life Is its democratizing influence. The can didates are grouped together into com panies of 160 men, all living in the same barracks. Every man is on the same footing. Wealth or position are of no account and individuality Is lost in the monotony of the olive drab. There's only one standard: "What can you do? A large number of familiar names are represented in the 6000. Colonel Roosevelt's two sons. Major Theodore, Jr., and Second Lieutenant Archie, are in a New York company. Both are ef ficient officers and well liked. Captain Klihu Root, Jr., is assigned to the Ninth Company of the New England division. George Vincent, son of the former Minnesota University President. now head of the Rockefeller Founda tion, is in training. Elliott, the author of ; the popular song, : "Long, Long Trail," was attached to my company Eighth New England) until he was discharged because of defective eye sight. The song was originally writ ten for a college play at the New Hampshire State College, the institu tion of which Prof. Ralph D. Hetzel. of O. A. C, has been chosen President. The song has so far brought $20,000 in royalties to its composer. CommisHions Are Assured. T"orty-five from each company will be commissioned as reserve officers and ordered into active service with the first 600.000. An equal number will either be commissioned and put on the inactive list or be sent to the next camp. Ten or fifteen will be given second Lieutenancies in the regular army. Others will be assigned to the aerial, ordnance or quartermaster branches of the service. Major Stew art, the senior instructor, assures commission to every man who quali fies, though those for active service will be selected on a competitive basis. Most of the candidates want to get into active service, at the same time realiz ing that it means the French front within six months. The way these men .have sacrificed and will sacrifice for the country in the war augurs well for a speedy victory. GUARD CALLED AUGUST 5 (Continued From First Page.) Washington Convinced That Fighting Is Over and That Compromise Soon Will Be Reached Estab- ! lishlng Republic Again. LONDON. July 10. General Chang Hsun, leader of the attempt to place the Manchus again on the throne of China, has resigned all his offices and handed over the administration of affairs in Pekin to General Wang, who is a friend of Tuan Chi Jul, leader of the Republican forces. Special dispatches from Pekin and Tientsin add that fighting between the Republicans and Imperialists has ceased and that the Republicans sur round Pekin. Republican Hold Railway. The railway station in Pekin is held by the Republicans and trains now are running between Tientsin and the Chinese capital. WASHINGTON, July 9. Final over throw of the abortive movement in China for restoration of the Manchu dynstay is believed here to be only matter of a few days. Both official and unofficial dispatches have led to the conviction that the fighting is practically over and that a solution soon will be found by compromise, since both sides are faced by an ex tremity neither cares to meet the monarchists by fear of the death penalty and the Republicans by fear of the destruction of Pekin. Latest advices received hero report the Republicans blocking all four lines of railroad out of Pekin and Chang Hsun, the monarchist commander, still holding the ancient capital as a pawn for his personal saiety. in mis situa tion it is thought both sides are about ready to end the trouble. If the revolution is ended thus by a compromise officials are inclined to feel that It will have had a very beneficial effect on China, routing the last remnants of Manchnism and establishing the republic more firmly than ever before. Many previously discordant elements in China have been brought together against the monarchist danger and a period of unity is expected to follow. TOKIO. July 6. (Delayed.)
