of Visitors Announced.
HIGHWAY TRIP TO BE MADE
First Sight Will Be Cutting of Big
Logs Hauled From Klver.

Entertainment for the Belgian com
missioners who will visit Portland next
Tuesday will Include a series of public
receptions, a trip to one of the big
lumber mills, a tour of the Columbia
River Highway and presentation to
the N. E. A. convention at the Audi
torium. The programme was completed yes
terday by Mayor Baker and members
of the local committee.
The visitors will arrive over the
Northern Pacifto from Seattle early in
the morning and will be ready to re
ceive the local reception committee at
9 o'clock. The committee will Include
Governor "Withycombe, Mayor Baker,
the City Commissioners and a number
of prominent Oregon residents.
The party will go direct from the
Union station to the plant of the East- 1
em & Western Lumber Company,
where the Belgian visitors will be
treated to the rare sight of huge logs
pulled up out of the water and cut up
into boards in a few moments.
The processes of procuring the logs
and cutting them up into timbers of
various sizes will be explained, inas
much as one of the prime objects of
the commissioners' tour is to become
acquainted with the resources and the
industries of the country.
Following the lumber mill visit the
party will go out the Columbia River
Highway, stopping at Forest Hall for
lunch. They will return to Portland
at 8 in the afternoon and will be pre
sented to the teachers attending the
N. E. A. convention at the Audito
rium. Public Reception In Afternoon.
Thence they will go to the Park
blocks, ppposlte the Ladd School,
where an open-air reception and band
concert will be given in their honor.
The general public is expected to at
tend. An Informal dinner will be served
at the Benson at 6 o'clock. This din
ner, too, will be open to the general
public at the rate of J1.60 a plate.
Space in the dining-room Is limited,
however, so reservations will have to
be made early. Women, as well as
men, are urged to be present. The
dinner will be under the auspices of
the Portland Chamber of Commerce.
To emphasize the spirit of democracy
that prevails in Belgium, all functions
Incidental to the entertainment of the
commission will be informal.

Keller deserted her a few months after
their marriage in 1911, while Edith
Holmes in Tier divorce complaint de

Proposal From ChehaUa, Wash., Is Re

by Mayor Baker.
Portland now has a coal mine at Its
command to combat attempts at fuel
speculation or unreasonable boosting
of prices. The Superior Coal Company
sent a letter yesterday to Mayor Baker
and the City Council offering the city
the control of the output of a mine at
Chehalis, Wash.
The offer came as a result of the
Mayor's probe of fuel conditions which
was started several days ago and is
now under way by ' a special detail
from the police bureau. Mayor Baker
has taken the coal company's letter
under advisement and will investigate.
The letter from the company, signed
by Thomas K- CompbeU. Oswald West
and Claude McCulloch, reads in part:
In view of the war situation and the growing-
hlsb. cost of living, we teel that the pub
lic has a rleht to demand tbat it not be
midi the orv of those who control the fuel
supply and wish to advise you that the con
trol of the output of our mine Is at your
disposal, also the fixlna- of the price thereof.

Douglas County Resident Dies.
ROSEBGRO. Or.. July . (Special.)
Jess McCulloch, life-long resident of
riousrlas County, died at his home near
Kellogg Wednesday. He is survived
by his widow and child, his parents,
Mr. and Mrs. Thomas McCulloch, and
several brothers and sisters. Mr. Mc
Culloch was employed as fireman by
the Southern Pacific Company for
many years and was aboard the loco
motive when train No. 16 was held up
in Cow Creek Canyon a few years ago.

FIGHT ON DIVORCE DROPPED
Alimony of $100' to Be Awarded
Ruth Sichcl Schweitzer.
That Albert M. Schweitzer will not
eontest the divorce action brought by
his wife. Ruth Sichel Schweitser, was
assured yesterday when the defendant
declined to argue a demurrer which
he had filed on the same day the suit
was started and made no objection to
the entering of an order for default,
which was signed by Presiding Judge
Kavanaugh. Mrs. Schweitzer may now
obtain her divorce during the coming
week.
In view of Mr. Schweitzer's failure
further to contest the action, Mrs.
Schweitzer will be granted her alimony
of $100 a month, aa asked.
Car of Cherries Brings $4 3 0 0.
SPOKANE. July 8. What Is believed
to be a record price for a car of North
western cherries, $4300, was paid yes
terday by a Philadelphia firm for m
car of Bings and Royal Annes from
Kennewlck, L. J. Blot, manager of the
Spokane Fruitgrowers' Company, an
nounced. Another car was sold to a
New York firm for 3500.
S. I. Nixon Burled at Saginaw.
COTTAGE GROVE, Or, July . (Spe
cial.) The funeral of S. D. Nixon, who
died July 4. was held yesterday at
Saginaw. Rev. Joseph Knotta. of this
city, officiating. Mr. Nixon was 89
years old and was a native of Ireland.
He came to America In 1S37. Three
children, eight grandchildren and ten
