Hoover In Charge, and He Will
Be Court-Mart ialed.
Illie Hoover, aged 18. was given, his
last chance to make good, when Pre
siding Judge Kavanaugh yesterday dis
missed an indictment charging him
with larceny, upon recommendation of
Xeputy District Attorney Pierce. In
addition to admitting his guilt on the
larceny charge. Hoover likewise ad
mitted being a deserter from the Army.
But the sound of the bugle and the
tramping of soldiers about the streets
on the Fourth of July was too much
for the young man, and it was then
that he confessed being an Army de
serter and expressed a desire to rejoin
his company and go to the front. He
deserted from the Third Company,
Coast Artillery Corps, last Fall.
A sergeant from Vancouver Bar
racks was in court yesterday and Im
mediately after Hoover was given his
liberty from the County Jail ho was
taken into custody by the Army man
and taken to Vancouver Barracks. He
will later be taken to his company,
where he will be tried by general court-
martial for desertion. It was stated in
court yesterday that the young man
would be allowed to rejoin his com
pany and thus be given his chance to
make good.
In order that Hoover might not be
discharged from the Army because of
his conviction of a felony. Judge Kav-

With American Ambulance Corps.
"TV'e sail in an hour." So reads post
cards to friends in Portland from Wal
ter Scott McBride, formerly of The Ore
gonian staff, who recently enlisted in a
unit of the American Ambulance Corps
and left for New York.
Mr. McBride served as a. reporter on
The Oregonlan several years ago, and
later accompanied the Japanese com
missioners on their tour of this coun
try. For a year he held a secretary
ship in that country. Since his return
to Portland, Mr. McBride had' studied
law, and was admitted to the bar at a
special examination in Salem soon after
he enlisted.
He Is a nephew of Chief Justice Mc
Bride, of the State Supreme Court of
Oregon.

ROSEBURG, Or.. July 5. (Special.)
The members of the Roseburg National
Farm Loan Association met here yes
terday and passed upon 26 applications.
The total amount of the loans asked by
the applicants is $99,350. The applica
tions were forwarded to Spokane, and
if approved by the farm loan bank
there the charter should be received
here within tne next few weeks. Prac
tically all of the applicants are said
to be substantial farmers residing
within a few miles of Roseburg.

Creditor Accused of Getting Mortgage
by Fraud Convinces Hillsboro
Court of Innocence.
Sensational charges which were
brought by A. Battaglla and wife
against Costa Tita are without any
foundation, .according to a decision
which has just been handed down by
Circuit Judge Bagley, of Hillsboro, of
which notice has Just teen received in
this city.
The facts show that about three years
ago Costa Tlta lent $3000 to Battaglla
and his wife, taking a mortgage on
resident c property in this city as se
curity. The Battagllas defaulted when
the note was due and suit was started
to foreclose the mortgage by the Se
curity Savings & Trust Company, as
trustee.
In contesting tl foreclosure Dro
ceedlngs. Battaglla and his wife Sled
an answer alleging Tita to be guilty
of fraud. They denied that Tita had
loaned them any money, but on the
other hand had received the mortgage
from them upon his promise to get
their son-in-law. who was charged with
contributing to the delinquency of a
minor, out of trouble. They main
tained that they had agreed to pay
Tita $3000 If he was successful in get
ting their son-in-law, G. Starvaggi,
freed of that charge.
