HIGHER WAGES ARE ASKED Bridge Tenders Say $75 a Month Not Enough on Which to Live. Averring that they cannot pay the rent, the grocer and the butcher at their present wage scale, now that the cost of living: mounts higher every month, a committee representing the Kate tenders on the county bridges yesterday appeared before the County Commissioners and asked that they be granted an Increase above the $75 per month they now receive. Commissioner Muck placed himself on record as wanting to give the men 82.50 a month, the same as is paid ferry employes, but Chairman Holman thought the matter should be deferred. The Board has taken the petition un der advisement. The Board, however, granted wage and salary Increases to nearly all classes of employes In the road depart ment. Including office men. engineers, inspectors, foremen and laborers. OWNERS OF TRUCK SUED Plaintiff Anks 915,000 for Injuries Alleged Received In Accident. Trial of the suit of Andrew McAtee against the Roberts Motor Car Com pany and the Wan Lee Tuen Company was started yesterday before a Jury in Circuit Judge Belt's department. The plaintiff seeks damages in the amount of 115. 000 for injuries alleged to have been received when he was struck by an auto truck driven by Goon Wu. an employe of the Wh Lee Tuen Com pany. The latter company. It Is alleged, had purchased the truck from the Roberts Company, but final payment had not been made and for that reason the Rob erts Company was made a party to the suit. The accident is alleged to have occurred August IS, 1918. At the beginning of the nineteenth century there were more than 200 of fenses punishable with death. CITY ZONING IS SUBJECT Society of Engineers Discusses Pro posed Building Code. City sonlng and the proposed new building code for Portland were sub jects presented by prominent speak ers at the meeting of the Oregon So ciety of Engineers at the Central Li brary Thursday evening, Orrln B. (Stan ley, secretary of the society, presided. II. E. flummer discussed the build ing code, saying no building should be allowed to be erected over eight stories In height unless succeeding stories were aet back in the form of a pyramid. A building over eight stories in height, he said, shuts out sunlight from the streets, overtaxes the sewer system and presents a prob lem to the fire department. C. Lewis Mead, of the Portland Realty Board, defended the skyscraper. The sonlng1 system was discussed by Ellis F. Lawrence, E. B. McNaughton and J, J. Bayer. A. Q. Clark, manager of the Home Industry League, told the plans and obects of his organisation. Colonel Lynch Speaks Today. Colonel .Charles Lynch.
