Patriotic Sunday, July 1, will be an important event at the Univer sity Park Methodist Church, corner Lombard and Fieke. Every phase of patriotism will be fittingly observed. Dr. Hoadley, Grand Army veteran, will -speak In the morning at 11 o'clock. At the evening; services, beginning at 7 o'clock, Mrs. John L. May. "mother" of the Third Oregon; Mrs. McClallan, Red Cross worker, and Chaplain Gilbert will be present. All the soldiers en camped in this locality have been in vited to attend. A patriotic sing- led by Mrs. Callamore will complete the programme. Miss Alice Brown will be the organist. Dr. Abbett will preside. AuxiLJART Remembers Soldiers. The Army and Navy Auxiliary will serve Iced drinks free to all sailors and soldiers at the close of the parade July 4. This will probably be the last public appearance of the Third Oregon Regiment and the members of the company auxiliaries are asked to give what assistance they can either In time or money Company E Aux iliary have sent a generous donation. Swedish Picnic Arranged. At the Swedish mission tabernacle, Gllsan and North Seventeenth streets, on Sunday evening at 7:30 o'clock. Rev. C. J. Led in, the new pastor, will speak on "The Correct Interpretation and Significance of the Song of Songs." A cordial Invitation Is extended to all who understand the Swedish language. The Sunday schools of the Swedish mission tabernacle will have the'r an nual picnic at Kenton, July 4. Take the M. A. Kenton car to the . end of the carline and go one block east to the plcnlo ground. The Sunday schools will meet at the picnic ground at 11 A. M. County Physician Must wait. Dr. Harry McKay, county physician, will not get an Investigator for his depart ment for the next month at least, fol lowing action by the County Board yesterday in postponing his recom mendation for a month. Dr. McKay had asked for the appointment of an Investigator that alleged fraud in the county hospital and relief work might be detected. He appeared before the Board recently and gave several in stances of fraud which had been com mitted by people applying for county aid. Mazamas to Walk Over Hills. The Mazamas will take special car for Cazadero at First and Alder streets at 7:45 A. M., Sunday. From Cazadero, they will walk over hills to the North Kork of the Clackamas River and fol low the latter to the main river. The return will be made by the Clackamas to Cazadero where they will board special car at 5 P. M. arriving in Port land at 7 o'clock. The distance is eight miles. Ann DIUinger will be the leader. Damages op $5850 Is Asked. Dam ages aggregatnlg $5850 are demanded from the Portland Railway, Light & Power Company in a personal injury suit filed in the Circuit Court yester day by Mary Holmes who claims to have been injured seriously, December 27, 1915, when a streetcar struck her at the corner of Fifth and Lincoln streets. The accident, she avers,- was clue to the negligence of the defendant company's employes. "Our Country's Cal,i' to Be Strao. 'Our Country's Call" the words and music of which were composed by Bertha Slater Smith, originator of the Hose Festival slogan last year, will be sung by Jasper Dean MacFall on Sun day night at the patriotic services at the Sunnyslde Methodist Episcopal Church. The service will start at 7:45 o'clock. The church Is at East Thirty fifth and Yamhill streets. Southern Pacific Is Sued. Robert Davis and Paul Notzold, In suits filed yesterday, demand $2500 each in dam ages from the Southern Pacific Com pany for Injuries alleged to have been received May 29, last, when a wagon in which they were riding was struck by a train at the corner of East Water and Morrison streets. They claim the train was traveling at an excessive rate of speed. British Red Cross Meets Tonight. The last of the present series of week ly meetings prior to the Summer vaca tion under the auspices of the local branch of the British National Red Cross Association will be held tonight in Knights of Pythias Hall. Eleventh nnd Alder streets. The principal speaker will be Rev. A. L. Hutchinson. Musical numbers will be given. "American Patriotism in World Terms" will be Dr. Luther R. TJpon recommendation of Roadmaster Yeon, the County Commissioners yes terday awarded to the Schanen Marble Works the contract for constructing the marble superstructure for the Vista houBe at Crown Point on the Colum bia Highway. Their bid of approxi mately $9000 was the lowest of several submitted. Tatlor-Street M. B. Church. Patri otism will be the keynote of the serv ice tomorrow morning at 10:30 o'clock at the Circle Theater, 126 Fourth St., with special music by the new chorus choir and a sermon by Dr. M. H. Marvin, on "Religion and Patriotism." Sunday school at 12 o'clock. A general invita tion 1 extended. Adv. Student Body Elects. The student body of the University of Oregon Sum mer School held a meeting in Library Hall at 10 o'clock yesterday morning to organize. The following officers were elected; President. Jesse Mc Cord; vice-president. Miss Emma Marie Griebel; secretary, Samuel May; treas urer, K. G. Harlan, First Presbyterian Church, 12th and Alder streets. Rev. John H. Boyd, D. H. Streit will as semble as a body for the first time on Sunday morning when the young men will meet at Hill Military Academy and will be instructed in the first movements of military drill. Several of the members of the corps including Dr. Streit are graduates of the academy. The corps is awaiting orders to start for France. Dr. Grossman Is First Lieutenant. Dr. A. Allen Grossman, formerly of Portland, who has been connected with the Philadelphia General Hospital, has received a commission of First Lieu tenant in the Medical Officers' Reserve Corps. Dr. Grossman graduated from Portland Academy in 1911, and last year graduated from the Jefferson Medical College of Philadelphia, He is a Phi Chi medical fraternity man. St. Clara's Parish to Picnic. St, Clara's parish, Capitol Hill, -will hold their fourth annual picnic, Wednesday, July 4. Various games and races are on the programme. There will be a dance in the evening. Members and Invited guests of the Oregon Medical Association, now In this city, forsook their hall at the Port land Hotel yesterday and trekked out upon the Columbia River Highway, where they spent the afternoon, as far away from germs as their thoughts were. At the morning' session of the con vention Dr. T. D. Tuttle, Commissioner of Health of the state of Washington, spoke on food inspection, vaccination for typhoid, farm sanitation and kin dred subjects. The speaker declared that the farmers of America, in reality soldiers of the soil, were in danger of typhoid epidemics during harvest time, and recommneded the establishment of a sanitation corps to protect the health of all workers. Dr. David N. Roberg, State Health Officer, discussed the activities and appropriation of the State Board of Health, as compared with the larger appropriation allowed for social hy giene work. This morning the convention will be addressed by Colonel Lynch, U. S. A., chief surgeon of the Western Depart ment, who is a Portland vilstor en route to American Lake. The annual elec tion of officers will be held today and the convention will adjourn following a banquet tonight at the Hotel Portland. YOUTH, 18, PLEADS GUILTY Three Offender, Indicted by Grand Jury, 'W1H Plead Monday. Illle Hooper, a youth ot IS years, who was indicted this week for larceny in a dwelling, yesterday appeared be fore Presiding Judge Kavanaugh and pleaded guilty. He will be sentenced Monday at 2 o'clock. Harry Bailey, charged with larceny; Percy Losey, charged with a statutory offense, and Arthur Waters, charged with burglary, were arraigned yester day and given until Monday afternoon in which to enter pleas. YESTERDAY IS BEST DAY Army Recruiting Station Receives 20 at Worcester Building, 8 Join Oregon Cavafry, 10 Go In En gineers, 1 In Field Artillery. There should be a general rush to Join the colors today, for this Is the last day of Army Recruiting- week, the end of the Nation-wide campaign to add 70,000 men to the re&rular Army and bring it up to full war strength. Yesterday was the best day of the campaign, so far as Portland Is con cerned. There were 20 enlistments at the Army recruiting station in the Worcester building, where Captain E. J. Heubscher Is in charge. In addi tion, quite a number of men Joined the National Guard Reapouaea 1b Week Are 85, Of the 20 men enlisted In the Army, two asked to be assigned to the Third Oregon, and their request was grant ed, as Captain Heubscher has orders to take men for the Third Oregon and the Second Washington, as well as for the regulars. There is not room tn the Third Oregon, however, for many more men, this regiment being nearly at war strength. The 20 enlistments yesterday makes 86 responses from Oregon for the week, with one day yet to go. in the drive to obtain recruits before the draft law goes Into effect. While it Is no dis grace to be drafted, of course, many men prefer enlisting voluntarily. They may do so if -they present themselves to the recruiting officer today. Eosan, In charge of National Guard recruiting headquar ters, 10 Fifth street, enlisted three men yesterday for the Oregon Cavalry, 10 men for the engineers and one for Battery A, Field Artillery. The Na tional Guard requires only about 75 men now to be at full strength. Six men also were enlisted in the new division of the Oregon Naval Militia that is being organized. These men expect a call to active service in the Navy In a short time. Naval Dock Contract Awarded. OREGONIAN NEWS BUREAU, Wash ington, June 29. The Navy Depart ment today awarded to the Sound Con struction & Engineering Company, of Seattle, the contract for the erection of a building dock at the Puget Sound Navy-yard, to cost $570,000.
