Klehle Speed Alonsr Old Orrim Trail oa "Wy Amu Couutry, After probably the speediest mote trip ever made from the Atlantic sea board to Portland, two prominent Port land physicians. Dr. Robert H, Ellis and Ir. Frederick H. Klehle, arrived yesterday. ' Dr. Ellis end Tv, Kletile departed from tile Hotel Astor, New York City, an the afternoon of June t, and com pleted the entire run of S600 miles to Portland in less than two weeks, 12H days being the actual time nonsumed, after deducting- one and a half days for stopovers. The route followed led through Penn sylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska, Wyoming and from Granger, Wyo.( over the course of the Old Oregon Trail to Boise, Idaho, Pendle ton and The Dalles. The only bad roads were met In Wyoming. The longest day's run was through Iowa' and Nebraska, where Dr. Kllis. who drove his own car, covered 350. miles. The usual day's run on the trip ran from 10 to 12 hours. Dr. Ellis bought a car at the Franklin factory in Syracuse. N. Y., and toured through New England before Joining Dr. Kiehle in New York for the Western trip.- Read The Oregonian classified ada. RECRUITS CALLED FOR THREE) CAVALRY TROOPS EACH HEED SIX MORE MEN. Adjutant-General White Is particu larly desirous of having the Oregon Cavalry and Field - Artillery recruited to full war strength by July 1. Only six men each are needed for the three cavalry troops in Portland, and 20 more recruits will fill Battery A, Field Ar tillery, to its maximum quota. This will bo Use last opportunity 4 or young men to Join a dashing cavalry outfit, as no more cavalry troops are to be formed In Oregon, - and after the draft goes Into effect men will be ar bitrarily put Into the, branch of the service where they are needed, without regard for their personal preferences. Captain Cicero F. Hogan. in charge of the National Guard recruiting station on Fifth street; between Washington and Stark, reports that the three engi neering companies of the Guard, which also need recruits, have', been, doing very well In the past day or two. One of them Is. very near war strength, and the other two are above the ordinary peace strength. - - . . Contrary to general Delief, a man does not have to have been an engineer to enlist in one of these companies. After being called into the Federal service, which will be about July 25, the men in these companies will be put through some intensive training that will fit them for the combat engineer ing duties they wlU be called on to perform. TYPISTS HAPPY OVER RISE Stenographers In County Clerk's Office) Get Increases. Big, happy smiles lighted the faces of nearly a score of typists In the recording department of the office of County Clerk Beverldge yesterday fol lowing the action of the Commission ers in granting salary increases to all typists In that department from ITS to $90 a month. The Increase will take effect July 1. On recommendation of County Clerk Beverldge, . the Board likewise in creased the salaries of deputy clerks from 90 and $95 to $100 a month. All deputies now receiving . $100 or more will not get Increases at the present time. The Increase In salaries of dep uty clerks for the most part affects clerks of the court. PAROLE MAY BE REVOKED Earl Wilson Pays Back Only $400 of $800 He Admitted Stealing. His failure to pay buck to nls em ployer the money which he admitted stealing may cost Earl Wilson his lib erty. Wilson last Summer pleaded guilty to an indictment charging him with embexslement and was sentenced to a year in .prison and then paroled upon his assurance that, the $800 which he admitted stealing would be repaid. The parole limit has nearly expired and evidence was Introduced yesterday showing - that he had paid back Just $400 of the amount.
