Z. Hortoa Leads Attack. 2 To "Babe" Borton must be given the credit for the successful attack , launched by the locals. Borton proved the heavy artillerist of the afternoon. Tin the third inning, with the score 1 to 1, Babe belted a two-bagger into 'left field and scored two of Dougan'a ' walks. Not satisfied with this per ' formance Borton stepped up in the seventh, with the bases full, and re " peated his feat, scoring three more for the Beavers. Gus Fisher perhaps should be men tioned in passing, for Gus had a finger in the seventh inning rampage. As leadoff man in this stanza Fisher bounced a liner off one of Dougan's digits and the injury caused the former , Cincinnati twirler to walk the next '.'three batsmen, setting the stage for Borton's thump. Clever Fleldins; Is Featnre. Bill Kodgers and Dennis "Wilie In reality belong in the 18-polnt type headlines. Dennis negotiated a thrilling .circus catch in the fifth inning that robbed Buddy Ryan of a double or triple and cut off a run or two for the Bees. Bill Rodgers' choicest bit of fielding necromancy was pulled In the sixth. A walk and hits by Quinlan and Han nah filled the bags and then, with everybody straining for the third out, Tobin soaked a lino drive near second base that carried all the symptoms of disaster. "Cap" Rodgers took two quick steps, lumped high in the air like a kangaroo and came down with the ball clutched tightly between his fingernails. It was as nifty a feat of legerdemain as anybody has pulled since Herman pussy-footed forth with his "Enchanted Aces." Ilodgers also maneuvered a neat stop on a grounder in the fourth. Penner Is Hit Hard. All in all, Penner can consider him self fortunate, for he was hit quite lustily. Sheely boosted his bat average to the extent of three rousing two base swats. Hannah likewise bagged three safeties, one of them a double. Salt Lake scored one in the first on Tobin's single, Rath's sacrifice and Ryan's hit: another in the seventh on a walk, two-bagger by Sheely and Ryan's sacrifice fly and the third run in the eighth when Hannah, Dougan and Tobin hit consecutively. . OUTDOOR BOXING PERMITTED Red Cross Benefits to Be Held Dur ing Rose Festival. Open-air boxing matches for the benefit of the Red Cross wlli be al lowed during the Rose Festival by the City Council. A request for a permit for matches at Multnomah Field was made yesterday and received the sanc tion of all members of the Council ex cept Mayor Albee. The understanding Is that the boxers will not be paid, that the grounds will be free and that every cent of the re ceipts will go to the Red Cross fund. The date has not been definitely fixed. SEATTLE. Wash.. June 8. (Special.) Seattle promoters today announced that Jack Wagner, the Portland light weight, has signed to box four rounds with Harry Casey In the special event of a boxing show to be held by the Can adian Club on June 15. Casey Is con sidered one of the best lightweights on the Coast and Wagner is one of the Rose City's best at 135 pounds. Eddie Campl will box Eddie Pinkman in the main event, while Sammy Morris, of San Francisco, will box Joe Harrahan, of Seattle, in the seml-wlndup. They are featherweights. There is considerable interest In the outcome of the Campi-Pinkman bout. Campl holds the featherweight cham pionship of the Pacific Coast and Can ada, while Pinkman holds the light weight title of the Pacific Coast and Canada. Pinkman will outweigh Campl by several pounds, but the little Call- fornian hopes to offset the difference in weight by his cleverness. Dan Salt, Seattle's premier boxing manager and promoter. "With the announcement yesterday by the "Waverley Country ClJb that Chandler Egan, former National cham pion golfer, had sent in his entry and would be here June 25-30 for the Pa cific Northwest patriotic champion ships. It becomes evident that Waver ley will put an exceptionally strong four-man golf team In the field to de fend Its title to the C. H. Davis. Jr., trophy cup. Waverley won this beautiful trophy last year at Spokane, defeating the Se attle cracks Ford, Potter, Balllnger and Tilden In the finals. The trophy was offered last season for the first time, but is to be an annual feature In the Northwestern golf from now on. Last year the Waverley team con slsted of Russet Smith. Guy M. Standl- fer, Forest Watson and C. H. Davis. Jr. These four stars will again be available, reinforced by Chandler Fgan, J. R. Straight, C. H. Lewis, R. C. F. Astbury, John S. Napier, Kills J. Only four men will play as regulars, but this year, under the terms of the competition, each competing club must nominate four regulars and two alter. nates, the alternates to be used In case of conflicts in the programme. The competition is set for Wednes day afternoon, July 27. The Spokane Country Club, the Seat tie Golf and Country Club, the Tacoma Golf and Country Club, the Portland Golf Club and several other organiza tions expect to enter strong teams. The two teams qualifying In the champion ships rounds with the lowest aggre gate scores will play in the finals. Perhaps It is a fortunate circum stance for Waverley that Chandler Hgan has decided to enter the tourna ment, for Forest Watson, one of the mainstays of last year's team, has not been playing much golf and may not be primed. R. C. F. Astbury is playing the game of his career, and it is go ing to be a difficult task to keep him off the quartet. Mr. Astbury has turned In numerous cards around the 75 mark within the past month. Russel femith, too, gradually is working the kinks out of his Winter golf. A week ago he turned In a card of 70 In a Saturday competition and followed this with 75 and 74 for two consecutive rounds a few days later. Thursday afternoon, in a five-ball match, Heinrich Schmidt turned In 72 and Russel Smith 73. JOE M'GINNITY QUITS mO MAN" OF" BASEBALL RESIGNS AS MANAGER OK BUTTE CLUB. Poor Showing of Team This Year Said to Be Reason Famous ex-Major to Look After Mining Property. SEATTLE. Wash.. June 8. (Spe cial.) Joe McGinnlty. "Iron Man" of baseball, who has managed Northwest ern League clubs for several years, has quit the game. The famous ex major league twirler, who gained fame by his ability to twirl every other day and call for more, today resigned both as manager and player of the Butte Miners. While no reason is given for Mc Ginnlty'a resignation, the real cause Is the poor showing of the club which the veteran . has undertaken to guide to the championship. The Miners, who have been near the bottom of the race all season, have been going wo'rse every day and McGinnity's move was not a surprise to many. While McGlnnity has not any large sum laid away so that he can live at leisure, the "Iron Man" will be able to get along without his stipend from the Butte club. McGinnlty is a miner. and a successful one. according to re ports, and his mine, which he discov ered in the rich Montana country, is netting htm good returns. It has not yet been announced who Joe's successor will be, but fans all over the circuit will miss the scowling face and the old familiar side-arm ac tion of the "Iron Man" out there in the box. Association Meeting Postponed. CHICAGO, June 8. The special meet ing of the American Association, scheduled to be held her next Monday, for the adoption of an additional 42 game schedule, was postponed tonight until June 13. Finals In the president's cup golf handicap competition at the Tualatin Country Club have narrowed down to three players. Edward Keustadter de feated E. J. Frohman in the semi-finals and will meet the winner of the Dr. J. D. Sternberg vs. Rockey Hodgkin match. Dr. J. E. Sternberg turned in the low net score, 79, in the qualifying round. The championship flight qualified in the following order: Dr. J. D. Stern berg, E. J. Frohman, Edward Neu stadter. Jack Loulsson. Dr. Edward Hirstel. Rockey Hodgkin, Sam Hirsch and Millard Rosenblatt. Junior Player Defeated. In the play-off. Dr. Sternberg beat Jack Lonlsson, last year's winner, 1 up at the 18th hole. Rockey Hodgkin beat Sam Hirsch 3 up and 2 to play. Edward Neustadter defeated Dr. Hirstel 3 up and 1 to play, while E. J. Frohman took Millard Rosenblatt, the 15-year-old sensation, into camp, up and 4 to play. The finals In the second flight will be played between the winner of the Henry Metzger-Milton Friedenrich match and the winner of the Joseph Goodman-Lester Sichel game. The one ambition of Weldon Wing just at present is to show his home folk that Alex Trambitas was mighty lucky to get a draw with him when they met some time ago.
