Fifty Men of Company D to
Leave Portland Monday.

Recruiting Is Being Rushed to Pre
pare Units for Service in
France After Brief Training
at American Lake.
Fifty men of Company D, Eighth Re
serve Engineers, have been ordered to
mobilize at the Multnomah Hotel Mon
day at 8 o'clock to be dispatched Im
mediately to American Lake. A. simi
lar body of men belonging to Company
E, of the same regiment, also is to be
sent to American Lake Monday, leaving
here at o'clock.
This will be the second division from
Company E, as 50 men of that organi-
ration already are at the mobilization
camp under the command of Captain
Harold W. Young:.
The two engineers companies are
v making every effort to- complete the
work or recruiting up to full war
strength as rapidly as possible so that
they may be ready to report for duty
In France with the least possible delay.
It is hoped by those in charge of re
cruiting that both organizations will
have completed their recruiting and
the work of mobilization some time
next week.
A limited number of trackmen and
- bridgemen are needed to fill up the
ranks of C mpany E. it was announced !
yesterday. Other needs of the com
pany are two buglers, three cooks, four
flunkies, two blacksmiths, cne steam
shovel engineer, one powder man, one
stone mason, two steam shovel men,
two telegraph linemen and one rigger.
Company T has Issued a call for 15
more men, including three flunkies.
Captain Kenneth D. Hauser is in com
mand of this company.
The companies are being recruited
for immediate service in France. The
men will take up the work of building
and maintaining the railways in France
and are not pre-eminently a fighting
unit. They will receive brief training at
American Lake and then will be sent
to Europe, probably within 30 days.
Camp to Be Prepared.
The first unit of 60 men. which is to
be dispatched by Company E Monday,
is to be used in the work of preparing
camp for the remainder of that organi
zation. It was announced yesterday
that probably the entire company would
be at the training camp before the lat
ter part of next week.

Work on Programme.
The Improved Order of Red Men of
Portland and vicinity are organizing
a division for the Flag day parade of
the Rose Festival. A committee com
prised, of members of Oneonta Tribe
No. 2 and Willamette Tribe No. 6, the
two tribes in Portland, has been work
ing industriously for some time per
fecting plans for the proper participa
tion of the Red Men in the patriotic
celebration.
The committee consists of Dr. F. O.
Lehman, chairman; R. L. McDonald,
secretary; John V. Lankin, Lester B.
Smith, John A. Mastln and Elmer M.
Wells.
In addition to the two tribes In
Portland, Wachena Tribe No. 13 of
Oregon City, Kasseah Tribe No. 39 of
Oswego and Kumtux Tribe No. 3 of
Vancouver will take part as organiza
tions. The Rose Festival will bring
many members of this order to Port
land, and they will also parade as part
of the Red Men division. Orders have
been issued for all to assemble at
Eagles' Hall. Third and Madison
streets, at 1 o'clock sharp on next
Thursday. The division will proceed
from there to its place in line.

GREETERS NAME PORTLAND
Decision to Hold 1918 Convention
Here Is Unanimous.
The 1918 oonventlon of the Greeters
Association of Amerloa will be held in
Portland next June. Such was the gist
of a telegram received last night by
M. J. Slatky. of the Nortonla Hotel,
from the delegation of Oregon Greeters
which is at Boston, Mass.
The selection of Portland was unani
mous according to the telegram. Just
what dates will be selected by the lo
cal chapteri subject to the approval
of the National officers, is not known,
but it is more than likely that the af
fair will be staged In June. More than
500 delegates from all parts of the
United States are expected to attend.
A huge clambake will be held at As
toria, Or., as the guests of Mayor F. C
Harley, of Astoria.
BRIDGE COST IS UP $4000
Bids Opened for Construction of
Derby-Street Crossing. .
An unavoidable delay in awarding
the contract for the construction of the
Derby-street bridge will cost the coun
ty more than S400D more than it would
have cost early this Spring, the County
Commissioners learned yesterday after
considering bids for the work. This is
due to the advance in prices of lumber
and other building material.
State Engineer Purcell recommended
that the low bid of the Portland Bridge
& Building Company, $27,415, be ac
cepted for the construction of the
bridge and that of the Warren Con
struction Company, $6772. for paving
be accepted. Members of the board
said these two flams would undoubtedly
get the contracts.

Rudolph Schneider, of the Rose City
Dairy, Columbia boulevard and Thirty-
third street, was born in Switzerland,
but for more than Z0 years- has been
