IXOUB MARKET IS 40 CENTS HIGHER "Trices Respond to Upward Course af Wheat Grain Quirt, Tha upward course that the wheat mar ket has lately displayed and the scarcity of supplies In the Northwest have caused millers to advance flour prices again. Tha rlsa amounts to 40 cents a barrel and puts tha market for patents once mora on tht $12 basis. Mlllfeed continues easy with a lighter demand. Wheat was firm yesterday. Bids at tha Merchants' Exchange were tha same as on Wednesday, but at Seattle sales were made at an advance of 2 cents. There was very little selling In the country. The Liverpool grain cable said: "General situation in wheat unchanged. Arrivals continue liberal, stocks increasing, also ex port offers. Corn, firm; general spot offers and limited export offers; stocks light, ab sorption light. Oats easier with adequate arrivals.. Australia, reserves from 1916 crop placed at 160,000,000 bushels. A block of 6700 bales of 1915 hops, eon' trolled by the Oregon Hop Growers' Asso ciation, has been sold at prices averaging (6 a bale. A. J. Ray & Bona took 4000 bales of the lot, and 2700 bales were bought by George Lewis. The hops were bought for Eastern account and It is believed the purchases were of a speculative charaoter. as there Is but little demand from consum ers now for hops, either old or new. Charles M. Metzler, of Tacoma, who was In the city yesterday, la about tha only dealer who takes a bullish view of tha fu ture of the hop market. "According to the present outlook." said he, "the United State will not raise any more hops thl year than it need. I have been through Oregon and I don't believe the state, with half its acre age plowed up, will produce over 40,000 bales. Washington win have only about IB.0O0 bales, as 1200 acres have been taken out there. In both states tha crop 1 very 'I backward. California ha not reduced her acreage as much a the northern states. but. according to my advice from there. there la not likely to be over 80,000 bales." Oats Weak at Close. CHICAGO. June T. Notwithstanding that the corn market continued to (.how remark able activity toda, sensational advances in I price received a decided check. Prospects of warmer weather ana or. consequently better fild conditions for the growing crop did a good deal to aase down values. Oata loat 74 c to 174 c. The outcome in provisions ranged from 6c off to a rise of T74 cents. General commlseion-hous buying and rel ative lightness of offerings mads the corn market bulge at the outset, but soon tha feeling spread that the advance which be gan yesterday had been so extraordinary that a bait waa needed for at least the time being. The result wo that trader turned to the selling aide. Profit-taking by shorts led anbaequently to a fresh upturn, but the effect failed to last. Bulls were handicapped by numerous reports that country -offerings of corn had become enlarged overnight to a material ex tent and that shipper and industries had made liberal purchases to arrive. Talk of chances that the Government crop report tomorrow would prove bullish counted against the buying side of the wheat market. General expectation was that the Winter crop yield would be estimated at about 3S0.000.0O0 bushels. Oata sagged owing largely to prediction. that the Government report tomorrow would be bearish.
