18 THE MORNING OREGONIAN, FRIDAY JUNE 8, 1917. 60 GENTS IS ASKED BY LONGSHOREMEN Unions and Stevedores Confer Over Proposal for Increase 1 in Scale for Dock Work. EMPLOYERS WANT PARITY Rate at San PYanclsco reclarel to Have Xo Bearing Here, but Port land and Seattle Must Bo ' , Adjusted Together. Longshoremen of the "Willamette and Columbia River district are seek ing a scale of 60 cents an hour straight time and 90 cents for overtime, an ad vance of from 65 cents straig-ht time and 75 cents overtime as now paid, but they are not considering: 75 cents straight time and $1 overtime, as has been reported. That was established yesterday after preliminary conference between a dele gation representing Portland. Rainier and Astoria unions and stevedoring in terests here. The latter Inoreased the straight time scale early last month, advancing- the pay from 50 to 65 cents an hour, but not changing the over time. At San Francisco It is said the Rig gers' and Stevedores' Union asked for 75 cents and $1.25 last month and the employers obtained a compromise, 65 cents and $1 being accepted for cargo on coastwise vessels, whieh takes in the Hawaiian Islands fleet and vessels plying to the Atlantic Coast via the Canal. On offshore cargo the San Francisco scale is 70 cents and $1.10. However, Portland stevedores aver the San Francisco conditions or scale have no bearing on Portland and the Columbia River, arguing that as Puget Sound Is the principal competitor of the river, the schedule of wages must be the same at the Northwest harbors to maintain an equality. It has been suggested that steve dores and employers of Oregon and Washington confer with representa tives of the unions as to any increase, taking the stand' that no change will be made here unless the same is car ried out on Puget Sound. One reason advanced for insisting on equitable scales is that with the war on and plans being hurried for the general movement of supplies by railroad and steamships, the Govern ment is expected to call for bids short ly on stevedoring at all ports. Bids will be based on the scale of wages, as well as other conditions, and steve dores say if wages are higher here than in the north they will have that handicap to overcome. Lack of shipping here Is pointed to as Justifying the request of the unions for additional pay, yet stevedores say it is better than it was a few months ago and undoubtedly will Increase with war business. L. C. Gilman, president of the Great Northern Pacific Steamship Company, announced before the Chamber of Commerce directors Wednesday night that longshoremen had made a demand for more pay at Flavel, where the big turbiners are handled, referring to that as additional expense being borne. The Kan Francisco & Portland line is pay ing 65 and 75 cents here, the same as stevedores do, and as yet that company ,'. has not been asked to consider an in crease. WEATHER BUREAU AFTER MEN Students to Be Made Assistant Ob Bcrvers and Aviation Prospective. Loss of men from the Weather Bu st reau, through furloughs granted so they might enter the military service, has depleted the working force to such an extent C. V. Marvin, chief of the Bureau, is creating a list of eligibles for posts as assistant forecasters, high school graduates and students being favored for the places. After July 1 it is believed additional funds will be made available for aero logical observations in the aid of avia tion, and young men are to be assigned to aviation training camps and schools, the same as is now done at the Drexel station. Assistant observers are now paid entrance salaries of $900 a year, and that probably will be increased to $1200. District Forecaster Beals has been asked by Mr. Marvin to assist in the campaign for desirable men, and appli cation blanks have been furnished, so such Portlanders as are interested may be listed among the early applicants. IRISHMAN TO RELIEVE KAISER? Dr. Norden and Party Plan to Seat Celtic Burgomaster In Berlin. "We are on our way to enforce the lection of an Irish Burgomaster , in Berlin," is the message Dr. Ben L. Norden, surgeon in the Oregon Naval Militia, has written to a friend here from "somewhere in the Paclfle." With Dr. Louie Wolf, who was As ulstant City Health Officer under Dr. Marcellus, and is senior surgeon of the militia. Dr. Norden left Portland when the call came, and is now on the high seas. Dr. Wolf is on Puget Sound, and both are understood to be on duty with regular forces, among which the medi cal enlisted men have been assigned. The two Portland medical officers have been enthusiastic - unbuilders of the state's sea forces since the organiza tion of the militia, and on cruises aboard regular Navy ships have been commended for the conduct and regula tion of the "sick bay." BODY IS THROWN IN RIVER Murderers Toss . Victim In Missis sippi at Dead of Night. ST. LOUIS. May 31. The police de partment has been hunting for the body of a man whom murderers threw from an automobile into the Mississippi River the other night. According to a watchman and a ticket seller who were on duty at the west ap proach of the Eads bridge, they heard a cry for help and running to the bridge railing saw an automobile standing about five feet from the water's edge with its lights extinguished. They saw men struggling and heard a splash. A man's coat, badly torn, was found a short distance from where the car had been standing. The watchmen said the man's cries were heard for several minutes. Gangsters a few weeks ago carried the body of a murdered man to a similar spot under the free bridge, but when they saw a policeman on the bridge approach hid the body. From 20 cents to 25 cents a day'ls paid the women employed in the rub ber Industry in British Guiana. AMCSEMENTS. NOW SHOWING 1 1th St. Playhouse Morrison at Eleventh. Phones: Main 4767 and A 5802.
