6 THE MORNING OREGONIAN, FRIDAT, MAT 25, 1917. ALL ARE ROAD ARGUMENTS Three Rousing Rallies Held at Tangent, Shedds and Hal sey by S. Benson Party. MANY QUESTIONS ASKED Sledgehammer Points Made by Mr. Benson, State Senator Cnslck and J. Bowerman Bond Is sue Outlook Promising. TfALSEiV Or., May 24. (Special.) B. Benson and his good roads asso ciates held three meetings In this county today. At 11 o'clock in the morn ing we held forth in the Oddfellows' Hall at Tangent, where State Senator Cusick. of Albany, was the principal speaker. The Senator made a fine and Illuminating talk and explained ' in detail the provisions of the bill placing the $600 bonding bill on the ballot for the June election. As he is well known all over this part of the state and has a reputation for probity his remarks were taken at their face value and will do good. As a matter of fact the members of the audience from their demeanor and questioning were so favorably im pressed that Tangent is sure to give a good account of itself on election day. Mr. Benson followed the Senator and as usual he made a convincing argu ment and he was listened to with the greatest interest. If Mr. Benson could get all over the state and make his talk In every precinct there would be no question about the bonding bill carrying by an overwhelming majority, for his very demeanor carries convic tion to an audience. He does not make speeches of great length, does not wear an audience out but clinches and rounds out every argument. He Is a fine campaigner. When Mr. Benson was about through Jay Bowerman ar rived and had about ten minutes until train time, having been suddenly called to Portland. He made a sledge ham mer speech touching only the high spots of his regular argument, but he evidently had practically every mem ber of the audience on his side. At 8 o'clock a meeting was called to order in the Woodmen Hall at Shedds. M. C. H. Davidson, a well known farmer of that section, acted as chairman. Here Mr. Benson was the only speaker, but he acquitted him self well, going thoroughly Into the .whole subject. From the start he had the audienoe with him and during the course of the meeting and the man to man talks at the close it became evident that only one or two were even on the fence and It developed later that these had been won over. If there were -any there who will vote against the bonds they surely did not make, their views known. So It can be said that this was one of the most satisfactory meetings of the trip. A good many questions were asked, several of which were answered by members of the audience, but every thing showed the sentiment favorable to the bonds. Tonight there was a rousing meeting here. ,;.-- JEFFERSON HAS GOOD MEETING Advertising Neglected but Enthusi astic Rally Is Held. BT ADDISON BENNETT. JEFFERSON, Or., May 24. (Special.) The meeting here last night was a big surprise to Mr. Benson and all the other members of our party. The event had Been advertised only two or three days ana comparatively few had re ceived notice. Even as late as 8 o'clock tonight many of the Jefferson people knew nothing about It. Not until that hour did Miss Pauline Looney, one of tne Dest-Known clitlzens of this sec tion, know there was to be a meeting. But with the true spirit of a Daughter of the Revolution and with all of the celebrated Looney fire, she at once got Dusy. xne result was an audience I the Masonic Hall of nearly 200, with naiss jiOoney presiding. The speakers were Walter 1 Tooze. S. Benson, Isaac L. Patterson and Jav Bowerman. It is not feasible to review the speeches. I will only say that all of them were at their best and that at all times they had the undivided attention of the audience, which was composed almost exclusively of adults. No vote was taken as to the number of those favoring or opposing the Donas, out from the general atmos phere of the meeting, the character of questions asked and the aDDlause fol lowing each climax of the speakers. It is sure that of those present, practical ly every one a voter, a very large ma jority will vote on June 4 for the Donas. Jefferson is at the extreme southern edge of Marion County, so we leave the territory being looked after by Walter I Tooze and he returned to Salem. We are all sorry for that, for he is a most exceueni campaigner. However, we will be "personally conducted" through Linn County by State Senator Cu sick, who piloted us into Albany. MOUNT ANGEL FAVORS BONDS Marlon County Town Enjoys Benefit of Work Done Years Ago. BT ADDISON BENNETT. MOUNT ANGEL, Or., May 24. (Spe cial.) The meeting here to discuss the road bonding proposition was one of WOMEN! IT'S MAGIC! CORNS SHRIVEL AND LIFT OUT NO PAIN! For a few cents you can get a small bottle of the magic freezone recent ly discovere'd by a Cincinnati man. Just ask at any drug store for a small bottle of freezone. Apply a few drops upon a tender, aching corn and Instantly, yes lm mediately, all soreness dis appears and shortly you will find the corn so loose that you lift it out, root and all, with the fingers. Just think! Not one bit of pain before applying freezone or afterwards. It doesn't even Irritate the surrounding skin. Hard corns, soft corns or corns be I ween the toes, also hardened calluses on bottom of feet Just seem to shrivel up and fall off without hurting a par tide. It is almost magical. It Is a com pound made from ether, says a well known druggist here, and the genuine Jaas a yellow label. ' MEN! HIGH RENT AND LARGE OVERHEAD SWELL THE PRICE OF YOUR SPRING SUIT. These Mount Angel people are in a class by them selves. They unaided built the first crushed-rock road In Marlon County a dozen years ago. They wanted the trade of the Scott's Mills built a road and got It. So they know something of the value of good roads, and they are not averse to letting their lights shine, and they are bringing up their children with a full knowledge of the value of good roads. . That was shown tonight when there was a big company of youngsters, with distinctive apparel and striped hats, followed the band and chanted for good roads. Some of the banners these youngsters bore were as follows: "Help us out of the mud," "We boys will pay the bill." When the band reached the city hall and entered, about seven-eighths of the citizens of the town followed them, and also a large sprinkling of the nearby residents. The only reason the other eighth of the Mount Angel people and the balance of the farming community was not in the hall arose from two rea sons there was not room for the citi zens, and the farmers couldn't get in through the mud. Only for the good road they built, as mentioned, none of them could have got in, nor could we have got from there to Salem by autos after the meeting. Joseph J. Keber, president of the Mount Angel Commercial Club, called the meeting to order. Walter L Tooze was Introduced as the first speaker. He was followed by S. Benson, and Jay Bowerman followed Mr. Benson. I am not going to give the details of these speeches. They followed the usual lines and arguments of the speakers and mat with a better reception than in any other place where they have spoken. Mr. Benson and Mr. Bowerman, how ever, were more than usually happy and convincing in their remarks. The real nib of the meeting came as climax, an afterthought but, oh! what a climax it was. There was sit ting on the stage with several others from the college a visitor from New Tork state, a very late arrival. His name Is Father Weber. A clean-cut. modest, retiring, diffident gentleman. He ran into the wings when called upon by the chairman, and had to be almost forcibly brought into the spotlights. But in Just a few words he told us of the New Tork highways, of the begin ning a dozen or so years ago with one state highway and the later Invest ments up to $350,000,000. criss-crossing the state with fine paved roads, and the building getting stronger and stronger every year. He said he couldn t understand our talk about spending six millions when we could well afford to spend sixty millions. It was the best speech of the cam paign, and the most convincing. It will make many, many votes in this part of Marion County. However, they will only be needed for their value in the general summing up. So far as this precinct is concerned it will surprise no one if 85 or 90 per cent of the votes are cast for the bonds. land to enlist in the Navy. Recruiting Officer Sarmon was here and gave the young men a preliminary examination and pronounced them sound in every respect. All of the young men have been employed here in the orchards, the first two, however, having recently returned after spending the Winter in California, Arizona and Nevada. IRRIGATION WORK HALTED Project tabor at Otis Orchards Is Stopped by Strike. SPOKANE, May 24. One hundred men. said by their employers to be members of the Industrial Workers of the World, quit work today on an lrrl gation project at Otis Orchards, near here, after an assistant cook had been discharged because, it was said, he had destroyed food. The other workmen demanded that the cook be put back to work and that a member of the Industrial Workers of the World be placed In charge of the Irrigation work. When this was re fused, the men quit and five deputy sheriffs were placed In charge of the project. HOOD CAMPAIGN REVIVES Effort to Be Made to Carry County N Solidly for Road Bonds. HOOD RIVER, Or.. C. N. Ravlln, secretary of the Good Roads' Association, declares Hood River County's only problem now is that of getting the voters to the polls, and be tween now and election citizens will be bombarded with literature urgin them to consider voting for the bond issue a patriotic duty. ALEXANDER PRE BCMABtT BACK OF MOVE. Attack en School Directors Also L.ald to Opponents of Mr. Aldennaa, Who "Wma Reappointed. ' Wilson T. Hume, attorney, whose name appears as circulator on the pe titions for the recall of Dr. Alan Welch Smith, member of the Portland School Board, won that distinction, he says, entirely through a mistake. He was asked to sign a petition to recall Dr. Smith from the school di rectorate and did so. As he supposed, he says, his signature was affixed as that of a petitioner. As a matter of fact he signed in the space allotted to he signature of the circulator of the recall petition and, all unknown to him, his name was printed as that of the man who Is instituting the recall. Mr. Hume says ho does not know who Is behind it or who is financing It. He declares he has no part in supply ing the funds, nor does he know who is doing It. "The woman who asked mo to sign the petition Is, I think, a friend of Mrs. AJevta' Alexander, he said. "I presume her friends are behind the re call, but of this I am not sure." The recall movement as directed agftlnst both measures of the Board la understood to have hsd Its Inception In hostility to Superintendent Alder man. Both directors voted for his re appointment, and In fact the only one who opposed him was S. P. Lockwood. who resigned soon thereafter because, he declared, he pouM not work har moniously with other members of the directorate.
