"We are making progress, anyway," was the comment of Miss Margaret Whlttemore. suffrage evangelist, of Detroit, Mich., when she learned that President Wilson has recommended that Congress appoint standing com mittees on woman suffrage, "He has recognized us at last," agreed Miss Margery Ross, of Cody, Wyo., who is accompanying Miss Whlttemore on a tour of the Paclflo Coast. The President's dljrposal to have the two houses of Congress appoint stand ing committees on suffrage, as indi cated by recent press dispatches, was highly pleasing to the suffrage work rs yastard&y. They believe that they are reasonably sure now to gain an early vote on the question in Con gress, providing war legislation does not prevent. $36,000 RANCH DEAL ON Tillamook Dairymen Negotiate for 2 40 Acre of Alfalfa Land. HERMISTON, Or.. May 18. (Spe cial.) Negotiations are being com pleted here for the sale by J. T. Hfnkle of 240 acres of alfalfa land to a syndi cate of Tillamook dairymen, for $36,000, of which about two-thirds will be paid In cash. The land is all in alfalfa and lies In the old Butter Creek country south of Hermlston. The new owners will oper. ate the ranch, bale the hay and ship It to their ranches for Winter feeding. DR. KERR TO SPEAK TODAY President of O. A. C. Guest at Civic Tjcacne Luncheon. W. 3. Kerr, president of the Oregon Agricultural College, and head of the organisation for food conservation in Oregon, will be the speaker at the luncheon of the Civio League at the Multnomah Hotel at noon today. He will discuss the public and pub licity in relation to the food prepared ness campaign, the city gardening, the rural organisations', the labor problem and the plan to recruit farm workers from the high schools and elsewhere, home economics and the organisation in Portland which la working out of the headquarters at the Oregon building la the campaign. ADAMS FUNERAL IS TODAY City Treasurer's Fatlier to Be Bnr- led in Rose City Park Cemetery. The funeral of William Adams, father of City Treasurer Adams, will be held this afternoon at 4 o'clock from Fin ley's chapel, with burial at Rose City Park Cemetery. Mr. Adams was 69 years of age and had been a resident of Portland for 30 years, during which time he had been in business.
