THE MORNING OREG ONIAN, WEDNESDAY. 31 AY 2, 1917. 19 EAST WOULD RESELL Wheat Can Be Bought Back Under Prevailing Prices. LOCAL MARKET DEPRESSED Bids at Merchants' Exchange Are Reduced 3 to 8 Cents Oats Change Hands at 7 3 Cents Decline Barley Lower. The Tvheat market showed mors acuta signs of weakness yesterday than at any time for weeks. Blda at the- Merchants Exchange were reduced sharply as com pared with Monday's prices, blueatem being" off 7 to 8 cents, fortyfold and club S to 7 cents and red Russian 3 cents. Asked prices were lower In proportion, but demand was lacking. It was impossible to sell wheat East even at the lower levels. Eastern buyers who had bought 'Western wheat were willing; to oil It back at prices considerably less than tlioe prevailing In the Coast markets. While peace talk was the chief Influence In breaking- the speculative markets in the lOast, the improved crop conditions was also a factor and so, too, was an estimate Issued that there will be a surplus of 23,000,000 to 30.00O.O00 bushels In this country to be. carried over into the new crop. The coarse grain markets were also de pressed. One hundred tons of May oats were sold at the Exchange at $53.25. a de cline of 75 cents from Monday's bid. Of fers for barley were reduced BO cents to $1 a ton. The Liverpool cable reported wheat easier with favorable advices from Winnipeg. Kradstrcets estimated the world's wheat de crease (European figures missing) at 7,250, 000 bushels, the corn decrease at 2.732.000 bushels, and the oats decrease at 724,000 bushels. Two Australian cargoes of wheat are reported to be on the way to the Pacific Coast. IS About 75 Ter Cent of Wheat This Tear Will Be Spring Sown. The following special crop report from S. B. Calderhead, general agent at Walla Walla, has been received by W. C. Wilkes, assistant general freight and passenger agent Of the Spokane, Portland A- Seattle line: "Heavy rains throughout the entire terri tory for the past week have delayed Spring, seeding. "Umatilla County, on account of Fall own grain falling to come forward, 70 to 75 per cent of crop will be Spring sown. About 5 per cent yet to seed, and much of what la already sown la making good show ing and Is well rooted. Plenty of moisture and no further rains needed for some weeks. "Walla Walla County, 70 per cent Spring seeding. Nearly all done. About 5 per cent yet to seed, but this Is along the foothills and has plenty of time to mature. The Fall seeding is making good growth and much grain seeded earlier in the Spring Is well footed and making good growth and color. "Columbia County, Wash., 85 per cent of crop Spring seeding, not more than 60 per cent- done; delayed by rains and will be a week before farmers can get to it under most favorable conditions. Crop will probably not all be In ground before June 1 to 5. No un easiness is felt as to conditions, other than at general opinion that it will be short about 10 per cent. "Weather continues threatening." EW CALIFORNIA POTATOES RECEIVED Garnet Chiles Sell at 1113 Cents round. Old rotators Iull. A shipment of new Game-. Chile potatoes was received from California yesterday and put on sale at 11 -ft 12 cents a pound. The market for old potatoes remains very slack. On the street .lobbing prices ranged from $4 to SI.50. Shippers, reported no demand whatever from outside points and gave the buying price as nominal at $3.75. The vegetable market was well supplied, particularly" with asparagus and peas, both of which were weaker. A car of Wtnnlng stadt cabbage arrived and sold at 8 cents. A car of Texas yellow onions will be on hand today and a car of whit onions Is near at hand. Los Angeles strawberries cleaned up well at (1.60 a crate. The price may be higher today. , DEMAND FOR BUTTER HAS IMPROVED Eggs are Steady With Storage Operators Taking Surplus. . The demand for butter, both local and hipping, was a shade better yesterday, but there was little change In price. Eggs were steady with sales at 83 cents In a small way, but the larger part of the business was at 81 cents. The demand for poultry continues slow, but prices rule steady, as receipts are small. Xressed meats are also steady. Early-Sown Grain Doing; Well. A. B. Jackson, general agent of the Spo kane, Portland &: Seattle Railway, at Fpo fcane, reports: "Weather during the past week; more or less raining. Considerable acreage remains yet to. be seeded with Spring wheat. The etrly-iown grain Is up and looking fine. There is sufficient moisture already in the ground to assure a good crop providing we have rain in July to finish developing the crop. It Is now estimated that 40 per cent of the Fall wheat In the Palouse country Will have ,to be reseeded." Spring Crop Prospects Better. ALBANY, Or., May 1. (Special.) Though Showers come almost dally in this section, farmers say they are not impeding progress, hut, on the contrary, may result in benefit. The present comparatively clear weather Is preferred, they say. to very warm weather because, since the ground has been so wet. too warm weather would tend to bake It. The ground Is now drying gradually and will be In good shape. There has been so much rain the past month that the farming season Is later than usual, but rapid progress Is being made and there la every prospect that Spring crops may be planted In time to assure a good yield. Barley Takes Place of Wheat. DAYTON. Wash., May 1. (Special.) drain, which snouia te six Inches high In Columbia County at this time of year, has in many places not yet been sown on ac count of weather conditions. Fall wheat, which was Winter-killed, has been Impos sible to resow, and where It failed to come up. barley will be planted, as It will have a better chance of maturing before frost than wheat. No little discouragement Is being zelt throughout ttte county, as tne only pres ent prospects for fair crops are In a little northerly section of the county, whose grain Is always In danger of being burned by east winds later in the summer. Deschutes Alfalfa Damaged. 8ENP. Or.. May 1. (Special.) Exten gilve damage to alfalfa fields in Deschutes rounty Is reported by County Agriculturist "rllanchard. Over 000 acres are already re ported as dead and It Is feared that as the season. develops more will be discovered. It Is not yet' certain whether this is the result of Winter killing or the work of an- In sect Zuugus. in either case, the situation Is serious and promises a bad shortage of nay in tne coming year.
