SAKE STILL FOUND Large Japanese Liquor Plant and Store Discovered. SUICIDE EFFORT SPOILED Census-Takers Stumble on Factory in North End and Seize Big Supply ot Liquor Plant Is ' Seen In Fall Operation. ' The source of recent Japanese "Jags." of frequent appearance on tbe police docket for several months, la believed to have been disclosed yesterday, when Patrolmen Miller and Wellbrook raided a complete sake moonshine still at 263 Flanders street, and arrested the oper , ator, K. Sumata, a Japanese. Aseiffi ed to duty in the census-taking of Chinatown grants, the two patrol men, both veteranB of the North End beats, entered tenement and lodging houses on the .duty of the moment, but vigilant to observe any clew to the source of ths "contraband cake which has enlivened the Oriental quarter of late. . At 28S Flanders, on tuo second floor f that rambllnfr tenement. they ' knocked at Sumata's barred and bolted door. Without parley the Japanese, presumably expecting customers or friends, drew back the locks and opened tha door. As he saw the two plain clothes patrolmen, familiar figures in tbe North End, he struggled to close It again, but the police thrust past him. Two stills simmered -in plainsight over a gas stove. Attempt at Suicide Stopped, i "W-ll. you're under arrest, old man," said Patrolman - Wellbrook. Sumata sprang Into another room. "I keel my self!" he cried, and cast about for a weapon. The police closed with him, and for some moments Sumata strug gled with his captors. Then he regained his calm, and said with philosophical nonchaiance, "AU right, what you going to do with me?" Both stills, one of five and one of ten gallon capacity, were In operation, and the pale, whitish liquor of Japan dripped steadily from the distilling ""worms." There were four rooms in Sumata's lit tXp "made In Oregon" enterprise, each given over to some detail of sake dis tillation. ' Seventeen barrels of pearl-white rice and water, the fermenting mash from which sake is distilled, were in another room, each barrel being of EB-gallon capacity. The contents were in various stages of fermentation, some ready for the big wooden presses, others just started In the' evolution that produces alcohol in the form of rice whisky. Liquor storeroom Found. Another room housed two huge wooden presses, of careful craftsman ship, and from their spouta poured the yellow fermented rice liquor that enters the stills. At least 500 pounds of pressed-out mash was piled on the floor. - ' In the fourth room Sumata had stored the product of his plant, 20 or 30 gal lons of the fiery liquor Itself, ready, for sale in gallon glass jugs. This sake was not the colorless product of the stills, but had been darkened by the addition of caramel, several quarts of which sat upon the benches In the dis tilling room. Sumata was taken to the police sta tion and "booked" by Patrolmen Miller and Wellbrook, who then turned him over to the custody of the Federal au thorities. Though Japanese sake stills have been discovered and raided In this city before, the ooup of yesterday, the capture of Sumata and his sake plant Is held to be the largest and most Im portant of recent years. Sumata Is charged with moonshlning and Is held under $1000 bail. ' i Deputies LittelL Mann -end McGlll, of the Internal Revenue Service, were notified by the police, and took charge of the still and Its potent product, con gratulating Patrolmen Wellbrook ana Miller heartily upon the detection and arrest of the Japanese. V Flo Adler Singa Well-Chose Selection Prettily and la Joined In Num ber by Rich Halo Voices. Musla and mirth reign supreme on the new bill at the Hippodrome, which opened yesterday to round out the week. " . Fascinating -little comedienne, plump and pretty, is Flo Adler. who tops the, bllL She sing's cheerily and two young men guests (?) of the theater, sitting In a front box. Join lnthe sing ing and add to the novelty and artistic value of the Occasion. Miss Adler has seen to It that her se lections are the variety with an univer sal appeal, and has considered melody and popularity as points an audience favors. As a result, her act Is a real hit. Sam Hood, s? blackface artist, affords much Joy when he appears- as the man from Mexico. Apparently Mexico has not a warm spot in Sam's heart, and-he has a lot .to say about the place and its people, all of it with a comedy punch. Sam sings -parodies too, and they're bright, new parodies that catch, like fire. - Two dainty girl violinists are Dale and Weber, who wear smart up-to-the-second apparel, and offer a delightful musical act In which they introduce clever dancing steps. Delton. Mareena and Delton are a trio of equilibrists who present post graduate art in Kand-to-head balanc ing. The element of danger In this act holds the audience spellbound. The thrills In the act. are Interspersed by acrobatic comedy, provided by one of the trio In the guise of a messenger lad and who is apparently boneless. A singing and stepping novelty is sponsored by Duzane and Chapman, who make their first appearance in the old-fashioned garb of a half century ago. Later they change to modern costumes and close their act with an attractive Winter skating scene. A remarkably sagacious canine ' Is T7no, who appears with his trainer and master. Pope. Uno performs all sorts of new tricks and displays amazing intelligence. "Winged Millions" and "Double Crossed" episodes three and four in the interesting serial "Patrla," featuring Mrs. Vernon Castle, are shown In the motion-picture portion of the bill.
