- - i , . t - TnE MORXING OREGOyiAy, - FRIDAY, MARCH 23, 1917. J- fl'GREDIE PLEASED WITH 4 HEW VETS Slay-at-Homes Join Beavers, but Are Not in as Good Shape as Voyagers. 3 ROOKS ADDED TO QUAD Portland Not to Take Higgrlnbotham. Brown or Bwaclna Deal May Be Made Wlta Pittsburg tor Soutliworth. BY ROSCOB PAWCETT. MARTSVILLE. CaL. March 22-(Bpe-daL Reinforced fcy seven new play ers of more or less renown, the Port land Coast Leaguers ' christened their second training- camp of the Spring here this afternoon. While a slight breeze swept the field, the sun was out, and the squad enjoyed a good skirmish. Nobody seemed to have lost any of the old-time paprica on the ocean trip from Honolulu, and i stranger could have spotted the land lubber stay-at-homes from the already conditioned gang from Honolulu. Walter McCredle had sent word to the late reporters at Stockton to re main there for another day, owing to the limited hotel facilities here, but Mack's Paul Revere must have gone astray. The message miscarried, and the entire gang trooped into Marys villa before noon. Some of them may have to sleep on billiard tables tonight. Aen pies Are Promising The new men are Lynn Brenton, pitcher. New Orleans; William Fincher, pitcher, St. Louis; Floyd Farmer, out fielder, and Paddy Siglin. Infielder, Pittsburg; Charles Schorr, southpaw pitcher, Oakland; Charles Iredale, in fielder, San ' Francisco; Ernest Prultt, pitcher. Oregon. While the four new vets are still sore and stiff from their -exercises with the Spokane club at Stockton they step like stake horses. Siglln is a dead ringer for Oscar Harstad. Farmer weighs about 185 pounds and has a face and pair of shoulders much like Carl Mays. His arm still is stiff but he chases fly balls in July form. Fincher Is another big fellow, tall, youthful appearing and tips the Fairbanks at 1S7 pounds. Brenton Is smaller than any of the trio mentioned. McCredie expressed himself as well pleased with the looks of his new vet erans. Oldtlmer Not Wanted. No mall has yet been forwarded over from Stockton and Mack has not heard anything from Borton about re porting, or Pittsburg with reference' to naming a price on Southwortn. He eaid he would willingly make a trade with Pittsburg for new players. Mack doesn't want Hlgglnbotham. Brown or Swaclna, who are said to be out of jobs with a hankering to join the Beavers. It is probable that the Portland club will finish Its training at Vlsalia next Spring. "Doc" Boyer, secretary of the Vlsalia Chamber of Commerce, waited on Man ager McCredie today and extended an invitation. If the Beavers return to Honolulu next year they will go earlier, and this will necessitate two or three additional .weeks in California before the league tilts its lid. Portland opens at Los Angelea In 1918. The Beavers play Spokane here Sat urday and Sunday. OAKS OUTHXT CUBS ANT WIN Goodbred and Prougrh Show High- Grade Pitching for Coasters. OAKLAND, Cal., March 28. (Spe cial.) The Oaks thumped the Cubs to day, 6-3, because they hit the ball harder and oftener than the big leaguers. Sandow Miller again got hold of one and drove it a mile and a half over the head of Cy Williams. Any time a man can hit a ball too far out for that long-legged whirlwind to drag It down it is some hit. Cartoonist Demaree pitched the first five innings for the Cubs and was found for three runs and six hits. Nick Carter finished for him and was touched for three runs and four hits. Good bred, the Montreal mammoth, worked five rounds for the Oaks and yielded up two runs and four hits. Prough finished the Job by giving up one run and three hits. Prough looked much better than he did earlier in the week when the Cubs peppered him for six hits in one inning. Each team made two double plays that helped out the pitchers. There was plenty of hitting, so the game was Interesting. Score: R- H. E. R II. E. Chicago... S 7 ljOakland. . .. 6 10 3 Batteries Demaree, Carter and Wil son.; Goodbred, Prough and Murray. With both teams staking every thing on victory, the rival players as friendly as a lot of strange bulldogs, and the dopesters refusing to give either team the advantage, the little af fair at the Arena tomorrow night, in which the Seattle Mets will attempt to n&ng anotner aereat on the Montreal Frenchmen in the third of the series for the hockey championship of the world, promises to be a warm session. The last two battles between these great aggregations of puck chasers have not been any pink teas, but the wise ones are predicting the keenest struggle of the series tomorrow night. Each team has won one game and each is eager to grab the lead, as a victory means a lot in a five-game series. Despite their strenuous mix Tues day night all the men on both squads are ready for the struggle. Corbeau. the Montreal defense man, who was slightly hurt, has been doctoring his injured leg and he will probably take his place In the game. The remainder of the visitors worked out today at the Arena for an hour and all reported themselves in the best of shape. The Mets did not Dractlce torla- hnf satisfied themselves with a brisk skate. The improved condition of Bobby Rowe's shoulder makes Manager Mul doon believe that his defense regular will be In the game again tomorrow night, although Roy Rickey, who has been playing great hockey, will start in Rowe's position. Seattle handler of boxers, accompanied by Vaise and Rid ley, came to Portland last night. The Sound City trio ar confident of going home tonight with a clean slate. But the Portland-Seattle bouts are not the only ones of interest on the bill. In the semi-windup, Billy Nelson, who' made fast Eddie Miller look as though he were tied to a stake, meets Frankie Huelat, who has been coming by leaps and bounds. Nelson Is sure he will trounce the former Multnomah Ama teur Athletic Club representative. Billy has been promised matches with Eddie Brewster Fmkman here and a tussle with "Muff" Bronson at Vancouver. Joe Gorman battles Shel McCool, while Pinky Lewis, negro Sah Francisco heavyweight, has been substituted against Frank Kendall Instead of Joe Clifford. The latter told Manager Mer rill that he had a sore shoulder or something else. Kendall and Lewis make- a better bout than Kendall and Clifford, so the card is strengthened. Lewis is a com ical boxer In the ring, always pulling off something funny. He can handle the gloves and will wage war from the start on Kendall. Joe Farrell, a boy with several knock outs to his credit, meets Charley Car ter, a protege of Mike Butler, In the first bout. Jack Grant will referee "the three main bouts with Jockey Bennett han dling the preliminaries. Jack Fahle will hold the watch. All decisions will be given by the referee. No Judges will be used. 'Frenchy Vaise is still the Canadian lightweight champion," said Dan Salt last night, "He lost a lS-round decision to Johnny O'Leary two years ago, but as he beat O'Leary in the short-round game prior to that and as Johnny has left this part of the country, Vaise has perfect right again to claim the title. "Vaise is in grand shape and boxing better than he ever did. He'll stand Mitchie on his head." Joe Rivers, of California, is in New York again. The little Mexican, who beat Leach Cross in two bouts in Gotham some time ago, will meet Jimmy Duffy at the Harlem Sporting Club tonight. Johnny Kllbane, featherweight cham pion of the world, the other night re fused to meet Young Murphy, of Syra cuse, at Syracuse, N. T in a ten-round bout because Murphy was nine pounds the heavier. Murphy had agreed to make 133 pounds ringside, but weighed in at 9 P. M. at 137. Kllbane weighed 1284. Police reserves were called when the crowd, disappointed, became unruly. Bob Burns, the Dallas. Tex, bantam weight, is in Denver and hi j started training at the National Athletic Club for nls 15-roun fight with Jack Brat ton Monday night. Burns has met Roy Moore, Zulu Kid, Nate Jackson and Benny McNeil. Jack Bratton will box Young Joe Azevedo ten rounds at Ely, Nev., April 7. He will leave Denver right after the bout with Bobble Burns. Larney Llchtensteln's proposal to organize a regiment of boxers in case of war will be acceptable if he leaves out the champions.
