IHRPODROMB TROUPE AMAZES BT ITS FEATS OP DARIJfG. Vretty Girls, Latest Toggery, Good Voices and Soma Clever Makers of Smiles Are Pleasing. Sometimes at & circus the entire per formance stands still and attention centers on Just one act. usually of an acrobatlo nature. Invariably even the other performers to whom the act Is an old story, and the "hired help" who have viewed it over and over, are just as Interested as the most unsophisti cated In the audience. That Is exactly what goes on at the Hippodrome this week when the Orton troupe of tlgrht-wlre performers puts on Its act. It has all the qualities of & big- feature act at a three-ringed cir cus, and all other operations are Euspended the while this daring pair amaze and delight. They race a la squirrels on madly re volving cables, and the audience can cauge the speed they maintain by means of Indicators placed so as to show the progress of the race. It Is a genuine race, too, and falls to the swiftest. There's a comedy ele ment Introduced In the sensational act, and this Is provided by one of the troupe burlesquing the tight-wire ar tists. He appears as a clown with a goose, and they take- off the others with unerring aim and bring much mirth. One of the big features at the Hippo drome is the serial picture of Mrs. Ver non Castle In "Patria." This feature opened on the new bill yestecday, and two chapters are to be shown at each performance until Sunday. Succeeding episodes will be given the last three days of each week until the entire se rial is shown. Besides- this picture, whioh In Itself Is highly alluring, and the Orton troupe . of tight-wire artists, the Hippodrome offers six more acts. "Raffles, the Dentist," a comedy skit. Is presented by Stan, and May laurel. 6tan Is a brilliant burlesquer of types and has further claim to attention as having appeared in vaudeville with Charlie Chaplin. The act he offers is eplete with fun, and Miss Laurel adds to Its effectiveness by appearing in smart toggery. A saucy maid Is Blllle Joy, who lives up to her last name every second she's on the stage. Blllle sings, merrily and prettily, and puts Individuality Into every ballad. A trio of songsters Is composed of Baker, Branlgan and Sherman, who possess good voices and have a. pleasing repertoire. Exoellent entertainers are Allen & Moore, who sing classy songs and step around In fancy style. The Spanish Goldinis Juggle every thing on the stage, from the chairs to the rugs on the floor, the latter being the exceedingly difficult and novel part of their act. FESTIVAL AID IS PROMISED City Council Also Will Contribute to Education Convention. The City Council at an Informal meeting yesterday agreed to give finan cial aid to the annual Rose Festival and to the National Education Asso ciation convention. Municipal aid has been asked In order that the events may be made successes. The amount to be given probably will be $2000 In each event. . This will not be settled, however, until the Coun cil meeting this morning.
