COMFORT STATION URGED
Commissioner Baker Desirous of
Z , Early Decision by Council. -
Cltjr Commissioner Baker will urpo
at this morning' Council meeting an
arly decision by a committee appoint
ed recently to look Into the question
of a public comfort station at Third
and Alder streets. He wants to get
the station completed before the com
ing' Rose Festival.
Tentative) plans have been pre
pared for a station partly under side
walk space and partly in the basement
of the Panama building:., on the north
east corner of ThtrO and Alder streets.
It Is said this site could be utilized at
raesonable cost to the city. There has
been an insistent demand for a station
in that part of the city for several
months past.
Aaron Cutler, a Democrat, of Hudson
N. H., to celebration of President Wil
son's re-election, has been wearing: the
high, white silk hat which he wore in
the Greeley campaign of 1872, at the
centennial of 1ST6 and after President
Wilson's victory in 1912.
CITY SCHOOLS ARE PRAISED
V. II. Holmes, Harvard Educator,
la Visitor In Portland. J
W. H. Holmes, head of the depart
ment of education at Harvard Uni
versity, was a visitor to the Portland
schools yesterday. In the morning he
rave an address at Jefferson High
School and last night he was guest at
a dinner at the University Club, which
was attended by a large - number of
members.
Mr. Holmes expressed himself as
pleased with the progress being made
along lines of modern pedagogy in
this city. He said the Portland schools
are well up in the front rank among
all such Institutions in this country.
He will also spend today in Portland.
REHEARSAL IS TONIGHT
Singers in "Elijah" Are to Be Well
Drilled for Dedication.
The music scores of Mendelssohn's
oratorio "Ellajh.' to be used at the
music dedication of the Civic Audi
torium in June, have arrived from the
East and the first rehearsal of the
chorus, under direction of William H.
Boyer. will take place tonight at 8
o'clock In the chapel of the First Uni
tarian Church, with entrance on Broad
way, near Yamhill street.
The committee hopes for a large at
tendance of chorus singers, sopranos,
contraltos, tenors and bassos. It is
planned to have a chorus of 250 se
lected chorus singers.
