TITE MORNING OREGONIAN, WEDNESDAY, FEBEUAET 14, 1917. - 19 STRONG BUYING DUE California Expected to Be in Market for Wheat. INQUIRIES MORE NUMEROUS TTrgent Need of Grain in East Indi cated by Premium Offered for v Spot Shipment Local Bids Unchanged. 9he wheat market was steady yesterday With all bid, at the Merchants' Exchange unchanged from Saturday. In the East options were slightly lower, but there was no change In the cash situation, as shown by the Inquiries received during the day from Eastern buyers. That they need wheat Is shown by their willingness to pay 8 cents a bushel more for spot than for future shipments. Traders are looking forward to a good California business .and believe the most Important movement in the latter part of the season will be in that direction. Cali fornia inquiries are becoming more numer ous, but the indications are the buying will f be deferred until next month. Since the be ginning 01 tne present season, shipments of wheat from Portland and Puget Sound to California have been only 1,422.710 bushels, as against 3,929,443 bushels sent south in the corresponding period of the previous season. The oats market was easier and local bids were reduced 25 to 00 cents. Barley was a cent a bushel higher in the East. The Liverpool grain cable said: "Wheat, firm, light world's shipments, de creasing arrivals; corn, firm, with moderate shipments and dearer and fewer export of fers: oats, easier, more liberal arrivals. "Argentina, light showers in northern parts of province of Buenos Aires; corn prospects have Improved. t "France, severely cold weather with lack of taow; foreign arrivals light. United Kingdom, weather cold and wet; crop prospects unfavorable." Terminal receipts, in cars, were reported by the Merchants' Exchange as follows: Portland, Tues. NEW YORK. Feb. 13. The. constructive character of much of the news over the holiday probably accounted for the general strength of today's market. Peelings were broad, but -insignificant as to volume, barely amounting to 415. ooo shares. In general, rails were substantially better, Union Pacific making a gross gain of points, with 1 to 3 for St. Paul, Atchison, New York Central. Reading. Lehigh Valley and Rock Island. Canadian Pacific regained 8 points of last week's setback. In the war and semi-war groups, embrac ing such diverse issues ss American Woolen, Central Leather, Baldwin Locomotive. Inter national Paper. General Electrio and Na tional Enamelling, prices were 1 to 2 points better, with SH for Industrial Alcohol and 94 for Texas Company. At no time, however, was the trading, ex cept in Steel and standard rails, more than tentative. Resumption of the gold Inflow from Lon don, via Canada, did not prevent a tempo rary shading of sterling exchange with a sharp reaction In lires and recurrent heavi ness In remittances to Berlin and Vienna. Bonds, especially Internationals, were Ir regular with a new minimum for Anglo French 5s at S0. Paris 6s also were un der pressure with United Kingdom Issues. Total sales, par value, $3,660,000. ForeisB Demand Likely to Keep Amer ican Swine Values at Ex treme Level There was but little doing in the live stock market yesterday with a small run of eight loads at the yards. Prices held at the basis fixed at the opening of the week. Good hogs brought $12 to $12.20, while cattle sold at a wide range, according to quality. Commenting on the outlook for the hog market, the Livestock Reporter says: "Permanency of present hog prices Is looming up bigger than ever. Reports from Liverpool show an increase in demand and steadily rising prices for American meats. There has been a wonderful falling off In the production of pork in both England and Ireland, owing to the extreme high prices of feed. Germany Is taking prac tically all the products of the Danes re gardless of price, consequently England will depend upon ua Along with this, the available supply of hogs in the Northwest for the year la not Isrga enough for the home demand. 1 lie outlook for the hog raisers Is very bright from every viewpoint. "We would like to ask our pesslmlsttlo friends of a year ago. at tho time when hogs were selling at 6 cents on this market, te recall our statement that extremes did not govern, that it was the general average which counted. The general average be tween 6 cents since the first of last year and 12 cents of today gives us 8 cents, a very attractive price: therefore, about all any farmer ueeds to do Is to feed and breed scientifically and ship the hogs to market when they are ripe. If he cares to consult the graphs, showing peaks and troughs of livestock caused by seasonable breeding, he may gain a lot of Information as to the time it would be wise for him to have his animals fat." CHICAGO. Feb. 13. Bearish sentiment regarding wheat received Impetus today from Washington reports that were taken to Indicate a growing likelihood of ex tensive forcible measures to protect Amer ican Interests on the high seas. Largely In consequence early advances in prloe were more than offset and the market closed io to 1,0 net lower, with May at i.ia- to (1.74 and July at (1.48H to 11.4a. Corn lost ic to 1c, cats hio to ?ic and pro visions 12 hio to 35o. Downward swings in wneac pnucs reached a maximum during the last u.t of the session, when reports from Wash ington were current which seemed to point te such action as arming of all merchant men. The weakness in the final hour was also due in part to the absence of any new export buying, either for neutrals or tho entente allies. Corn gave way witST wheat snd as a re sult of mild weather tha would naturally lessen demand for feed. Oats sagged, owing chiefly te tne Heavi ness of other grain. There was some un loading, too, by holders who were unable to obtain cars for shipments from here. Lower quotations on hogs puiiea provisions.
