Tha mohair man who predicted that the Oregon market this year will open at CO cents and climb to C5 cents .may or may not be right, but there is no question but that the market will be a atrons one throughout the eeason. The high price of wool la the chief factor in the market, and the certainty that Imports of foreign mohair will be very light adds to the strength of the situation. A clip In Oregon about equal to last year's la looked for. In the Boston mohair market business In the past week has been of small propor tions, although prices are as strong as ever, according to the Commeruial Bulletin. Some domestic and more or less Cape hair are held In the market but the mills are not anxious buyers at the prices asked, Yorkshire Is running rairly well and s) a fairly steady buyer of raw material at firm prices. A fairly good proportion of the spinners have some orders for export, more especially to America. At the Cape prices are very strong. Sup plies are getting more and more limited and holders more reluctant to cell. The alpaca market In Liverpool Is con tinuing at a fairly strong pace both for fleeces and defective sorts. There Is a steady demand for hops and stocks are moving out of first hands at about the usual rate for this time of year. The season will probably close with a mailer carry-over than was antlciitedr Frieea ruling In this state range from 5 to 9 eents. and up to 10 cents is being paid In California. To date exports of hops from the United tates have been about 23.000 bales, of Jen less than 1400 bales were sent to the United Kingdom. The movement has been chiefly to the Orient, South America and Canada. As there have been practically no Imports Into the United States to offset the outgo, the showing must therefore be con ldered a satisfactory one. and the British embargo not such a serious factor after all except Insofar as It reduced comneti tlon among buyers m the American markets. It may be this lack of competition from England, rather than the closing of this Knglish outlet to our surplus, which is holding prices down to a level unprofitable to growers. It cannot all be chanced to the dry movement, for the latest brewery statis tics reveal an Increase in beer sales in the past Tear. Government returns from the principal brewing centers of the United States, representing 05 per cent of the total production, show a beer output In 1917 of 65.S30.1S7 barrels, as against 50.77i.002 ar rel brewed In 1910. ONION SUPPLY IS SHARrLY REDUCED Only 63 Care Remain Unsold Ln Oregon. Stocks South Light, Only 53 cars of onions remain unsold In Oregon. At San Francisco there are 4JJ cars and Uos Angeles bee 3000 sucks. This stock must supply the! Coast until new onions from some source are available, yet the en tire quantity will not remain here, for East ern orders have to be filled. The first out side onions will probably come from Aus tralia, but dealers do not look for any considerable Quantity before March. The aelling price In the country Is $5.50, at which a number of cars have been sold this Potatoes are firm at the old price, though tit ere are rumors of some buyers bidding a higher quotation. Although corporations have been notified formally by circular letters and published notices relative to the new special excise tax on corporations. returns ar coming in slowlv to the office of Milton a. Miller. Collector of Internal Revenue. Mr. Miller yesterday Issued another circular letter, calling to the attention of corporations the neces sity of filing returns on or before January 31. In case of failure to comply I with the ruling a heavy penalty will De imposed. Such returns are due from every corporation having capital stock tssued of the fair or market value of $ 5.000, or over, said Mr. Miller yesterday. "They must be filed with the collector In my office on or before January 31 to avoid a heavy penalty. he par or face value Is not the basis for determining tax liability under this act, buthe actual fair or market value of the stock; and this value Is ascertained either from sales made during a given period, or from the book value, earning capacity and probable value of the - corporation's physical assets.
