12 THE MbiLMNG OKKoO:;iAX, MONDAY, JANUARY. 13, 1917. LOOP PLAN IS AIDED Linn County People Want Pro posed Highway Pushed. M. A. MILLER !S ADVOCATE Revenue Collector Points Out That 40 0-Mile Road Would Open Vp Wonderful Scenic Region In Eastern Oregon. The campaign to get a state highway between Eastern Oregon and the Wil lamette Valley, which has been carried on for the last few months by resi dents of Linn County, is receiving wide spread support, according to Milton A. Miller. United States Internal Reve nue Collector, who is a former resi dent of Linn County. Mr. Miller has been active In gen crating interest in the proposed high way and is particularly interested in It as another step in carrying out the programme of the Pacific Northwest Tourist Association of realizing on scenic advantages in the state. The road when built would be paid for partly by Government funds, and the petition of the Linn County residents to the Linn delegation asks that that hody act speedily in the interest of the road. The proposed loop road would be about 400 miles long and would lead off from the Columbia Highway at The Dalles, running south to Tethlow Buttes, thence west to Sisters and over the summit of the Cascades by way of the South Santiam Pass by Fish Lake, Clear Lake, Cascadla, Foster, Sweet Home, Lebanon and Albany, where it would join the Pacific High way and make one of the picturesque scenic highways of the state. "This route would lead the traveler by at least two of the natural wonders of the state. Fish Lake and Clear Lake, now practically inaccessible." said Mr. Miller. "These two lakes ar equally scenic with Crater Lake and could be made one of the links in the chain of scenic attractions which will be heralded to the country by the Pa cific Northwest Tourist Association. Clear Lake occupies a bowl of a sunk en mountain, and is so clear that thou sands of huge fir trees that reach up from the bottom .100 to 300 feet are plainly seen from boats on the sur face. The Government has surveyed a. townsite on the banks of the lake, where anyone who will build a house upon it will be given a lot for his use, timber for his house and firewood. "The road would be a boon to the state commercially and as a scenic at traction. It would traverse all de scriptions of landscape, and the water falls In the Santiam canyons rival those in Yellowstone Park or the Tosemite region. Such a road would open up various Summer resort places, and would be instrumental in bring ing thousands of tourists who would prolong their stay in Oregon if there were roads to lead them to the beauty epots."
