Professor Wal lace MacMurray, head of the depart ment of rhetoric and one of the most popular instructors in the university, resigned his position last night, the reason given by the faculty being that he had suffered a nervous, breakdown. Professor MacMurray had more stu dents enrolled in his department than in any other department of the uni versity. , Besides his heavy classroom work, he had undertaken to start in Salem the classroom theater movement, but gave this up recently. Jan. 4. (Special.) Censorship of motion pictures shows in Albany Is requested in a petition being circulated here for presentation to the City Council. There is no local censorship- now. Jan. 4. Export business in grain today was said tonight by some authorities to have surpassed In volume any previous record since the beginning of the European war. The aggregate was estimated at about 8,000,000 bushels, an amount due in large part to a sudden price break that widened for a brief time to 6H cents a bushel in tha price of wheat, as compared with yesterday's finish. Announcements from Washington that President Wilson had in view a new effort to end hostilities seemed to be the chief reason for the dray's sharp est descent of prices. Once more Tom Long, the blind cigar dealer at the City Hall, has lost his fight for a living against the odds of poor health.
