Ogburn. of Heed Col ge, and Esther Kelly, in a survey ,-trhich Is printed in the American Sta tistical Review. ' The highest average wage per hour 4n 10 trades Is paid In Seattle and Is 71 eents. in San Francisco it is 69 and in "Portland 67. ." An average made In 35 trades shows San Francisco highest with 66 cents, Seattle second with 64 cents and Port-' land third with 61 cents. In striking the averages o 10 trades, the investigators used the following lines of work: Bricklayers, carpenters, painters, plasterers, plumbers, gas- fitters, day compositors in book and job printing, day compositors in news paper work, and day and night lino type operators. Chehalis Pastor Resigns. CHEHALJS, Wash., Jan. 3 (Special) Rev. . A. H. Chittenden, for eight years pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Chehalis, read his resigna tion Sunday. No cause was given and he did not say what he will do. The resignation came as a surprise to everyone. LATE PROWLER FINED $20 Special Officer Tells of Chasin; Charles Vogel From Store. Charles Vogel, 22, was fined $20 by Municipal Judge Langguth yesterday morning on an after-hours charge. He was arrested by Patrolman Dalrymple on complaint of James Boyd, a special officer, at 1:30 in the morning. The special officer testified that he found the door to a store at 233 Mor rison street open and entered to make an investigation. He disiyvered Vogel in the store, and the young man ran down Morrison street. The special of ficer testified that the fugitive ap peared to throw something away, and that in a search afterward discovered a cloth-wrapped section of gas pipe in the street. In the defendant's room were found two cartons of cigarettes and other goods, which he claimed to be right fully In possession of. Nothing was missing from the store. ' Willamette Classes Resume. WILLAMETTE TTNTVKRSITY. Salem. Or., Jan. 3. (Special.) -The Christmas vacation ended here today and classes were resumed this morning. The va cation was shorter than usual, but the students are pleased with Dr. Xoney'e policy of cutting all vacations to the minimum length, thus making it pos sible to close earlier in the Spring. A series of moving pictures of some of Portland's principal Industries will be shown at Reed College at the first two assemblies following the Christ mas recess. This morning at 11 o'clock films will be shown of the fol lowing companies: Northwest Steei Company. Portland Cas & Coke Com pany, Peninsula Industrial Company, and the Pacific Coast -Coal Comsany. January 11 at 11 o'clock the films to be shown include the Union Meat Com pany, Coast Culvert tt Flume Company, Independent Cracker Company and Flelshner. Mayer Company. Explanatory talks will be given by II. B. Hastings and W. C Morgan, of the faculty. These films are shown In connection with the college courses in commerce and Industries and are a part of the extension courses on com mercial and industrial methods. The weekly assembly is always open to the public Pioneer Resident Passes On. ROSEBURG. Or.. Jan. 3. (Special.) A. H. Loiier. pioneer resident of Ore gon and for the past two months a member of the Oregon Soldiers' Home, died here yesterday. Mr. Loiier was born in New Jersey and was a veteran of the Civil War. He was 76 years of age and was admitted to the home from Grants Pass, where he lived for many years. He la survived by a wife, who arrived here late yesterday in re sponse to a telegram announcing the serious illness of her husband. Mrs. Lorier lives at Grants Pass.
