TIIE MORNING OREGONIAN, THURSDAY, JANUARY 4, 1917. 15 AMUilRAI UCIM Tfl nuimiim. iit-L.ni iu BE HERE TODAY Naval Base Commission Will Hear Argument for Colum i; bia Site at Chamber. DESTROYER TRUXTUN HERE TTarship Slay Take Tarty to Van couver, and Then Proceed on Inspection Trip to Sea, Craft Is Minesweeper. Itear-Admiral J. M. Helm and the Federal Commission to investigate the proposed sites for naval bases on the Pacific Coast will arrive here on a Southern Pacific train at o'clock this morning, and will begin their hearing on the claims of the Columbia Kiver as a site at 9:30 at the Chamber of Commerce. The hearing will be held in the green room. The ammlttee from the Chamber of Commerce, consisting of W. P. La Roche, Q. B. Hegartit and Captain G. F. Blair, e'xpects to make a very brief pres entation of the merits of the Columbia Kiver harbor as a site, lnasamuch as a vast amount of material has been al ready placed in the hands of the com mission in documentary form, and there will be little need for extensive ver bal discussion. Although Rear-Admiral Helm has specified in his letter to the Chamber of Commerce, and also in his notifica tion to the Naval recruiting office in Portland, that the commission will be unable to accept any form of eepecial hospitality while in Portland, efforts will be made to arrange for the mem bers of the commission to be guests at luncheon at the Chamber at noon, be fore leaving for the mouth of the Co lumbia River. Trip Down to Be Inspection. On the trip down the commission will Inspect all the advantages of the Columbia as a possible site for a naval bafe. G. B. Hegardt, and perhaps other members of the local committee, will accompany the party on the trip. The United States destroyer Trux- tun is in the harbor, having arrived late yesterday from San Francisco, and will carry the party to Astoria. Members or the Commission are Admiral J. M. Helm, Chief of Con struction W. I Capps, Civil Engineer H. H. Rosseau, Captain G. W. McKl roy and Commander C. L.Hussey. H. H. Rosseau was formerly con nected with the work on the Panama Canal, under General Goethals. The Truxtun, known officially also as No. afternoon from San Francisco. The trim gray fighter, traveling beneath overcast skies of almost her leaden hue, seemed to glide as she was handled through the bridges by Pilot Babbldge. Above the Burnside-street bridge she was swung with her head downstream and berthed at Municipal Bock No. 2, at the foot of East Wash ington street. She is to leave there at 11 o'clock this morning with the Naval Baso Commission and Portlanders Interested In the selection of a Navy site on the river. It is not im probable they will proceed to Van couver and then head seaward, prob ably spending most time on the way in the vicinity of the Tongue Point Crossing. Lieutenant Womble Is Executive. The Truxtun carries a crew of 75, and when in tui commission should have three officers aboard. Now she has two officers and four chief petty orncers. sne was taken from the re serve fleet at Mare Island for the present duty. Lieutenant Stanley G. w oracle is acting executive officer. The Truxtun has two torpedo tubes. She is of 433 tons displacement and has eight 200-horsepower driving twin screws. The vessel was laid down in 1898, but not completed until 1902, be ing built at Sparrows Point, Mi, by the Maryland Steel Company. Her length is 248 feet, and her extreme breadth 22.3 14 feet, with a mean draft of six feet. Inasmuch as she is the first of her class on the Pacific to be fitted as a mine sweeper, the presence of the Truxtun at this time is of interest. KLAMATH BREAKS TAILS ITA FT Vessel Will Be Drydocked Here When New Shaft Comes From Frisco. That the tallshaft of the McCormick steamer K.lamath had broken was as certained on the arrival of the disabled vessel in the river yesterday morning in tow of the steamer Celilo, so she was ordered to St. Helens in tow of the tug Oneonta and will be drydocked here when a new tailshaft is received from San Francisco. The Klamath was reported in trouble off Cape Arago Monday night, when Douna ror ban v rancisco from Port land. It was thought then the loss of the propeller was responsible for her helplessness. The steamer Celilo, of the same flag; which was bound from Puget Sound for California with a lum ber cargo, steamed to the vicinity and took the Klamath in tow Tuesday morning. The former will continue on her way south today. It is expected the new shaft will be here in four or - five days and the Clamath probably ROSE CITY REPORTS EARLY ooumemers uiimpse Floating: Ice in River on Way Here. Because of her departure being on a holiday, she did not bring a full cargo and, for the same reason, her passenger list was less than 100. The Rosa City will be here only two days this trip, being due to depart tomorrow i afternoon at 3 o'clockl so freight will be hustled as she is to carry away all .. that can be loaded.
