Globe Kathleen Williams and Tyrone Power, "Sweet Alys-' sum." Sunset. WILLIAM S. HART, minus those low-hang-lng "six guns" and other accoutrements of the fron tier Westerner, Is presented at the Sunset Theater in a novelty Hart Photoplay. "Between Men," a story of gratitude, love and battle on the stock exchange. True, Hart Is pictured in his Western environment, but for the greater part of the picture he is garbed In the clothes of the centers of civilization, and replaces his prowess with the revolver and bowie with an overpowering combat of gold, climaxed by a terrific hand-to-hand encounter. The cast In "Between Men" Is un usually strong, for. in addition to Hart, the Triangle subject boasts of the presence of House Peters, co-star with lithel Clayton in "The Great JDivlde"; J. Barney Sherry, Bert Wesner, Robert McKIm and gnid Markey. The story concerns Bob White, a Westerner, who comes East to save an old friend from financial ruin by breaking his enemy, first In the mar ket and then with his fists. The set tings are magnificent, the stock ex change scene being one of the most pretentious and at the same time one of the most realistic the silent drama has yet produced. The love scenes between Hart and Miss Markey, who plays the role of the daughter of the Westerner's friend, are as delightful as the rest of the picture Is powerful, while the fight Indulged In between Hart and Peters is realism Itself. "Between Men" Is a picture that will please the most' captious. "Pills of Peril," a typical Keystone comedy, which means a two-reeler full of laughable nonsense and photo graphic trickery, is also on the bill, together with a Burton Holmes Trav elogue installment featuring Bavaria, Majestic' Border warfare, Mexican raids, tor rid Mexican love and just as strenuous hate, are all an Integral part of "The Love Thief," a decidedly topical pho toplay now being flashed on the M jestic Theater screen. The film is full of action, with thrills a-plenty, and has a good cast, headed by Gretchen Hartman and Alan Dale. Miss Hartman is cast in the role of a Mexican senorita, who loves Captain Arthur Boyce. of the American Army. Her love Is not reciprocated, but she makes Boyce's fiancee, Clare Nelson, think so. . The result Is a broken en gagement.- When the Mexican lass discovers that she cannot make the American love her, her passion turns to hatred, and In a fit of rage, engineers a scheme whereby the officer is charged with the murder of a woman. In the trial that follows Boyce la convicted. Mean while, a band of Mexicans, head ed by Juanita, the spurned - Mexican girl, raids an American town, and Clare and her uncle are captured. Juanita finds the girl, uncle, and Costa, a bandit leader, in a rude shack, and plans to avenge herself by forcing Clare to marry a peon bandit. While j J IUU It III H CUJ U IJft uruuKiib 1ULU the hut. Boyce has been exonerated of th crime, and, at the head of his command, had met the Mexicans, been defeated, and made prisoner. The sweethearts are left with Lopez, and by a skillful bit of maneuvering, escape from the hut. Then a thrilling race Is staged, with rescuers and bandits, riding to ward the escaping couple. Juanita Is struck down by a stray bullet just as she Is ready to recapture her enemies. A Hughie Mack Vitagraph comedy and Pathe News are also on the bill. Star. The Pendleton Round-up has at laet produced a worthy film story of its fa mous frontier carnival. The 1916 Round-up, the seventh annual event staged In the Eastern Oregon city, is being presented In motion pictures at the Star Theater, Photographer Jesse Sill having preserved upon celluloid the thrillers of the big Western show and accomplished this In a six-reeler remarkable for excellence of photography. All of the cowboy notables of the West, and cowgirls as well, with color ful contingent composed of the Uma tilla and Nez Perce Indians in all of their panoply, are presented in the pic- tup 7iiM At &o-lr V with rlri.i. loan ing from ponies to the horns of the I bovines, forcing them to the earth and J holding them with the teeth; breaking of wild horseo by cowboys and cow girls. Toping and throwing of steers. stagecoach races, exciting relay races, and cowgirl contests, are all shown with the background of 60,000 excited spectators. Jackeon Sundown, the 53-year-old Indian who won the world's champion ship bucking contest. Is one of the central figures of the frontier epic. The pictures are a splendid tribute to the daring of Photographer (Sill. His activities were most successful, but not without bodily Injury, for his take-a-chance tactics led to a smashup that sent him to the hospital with several broken ribs. The girlish mannerisms and Inimit able moods of Mae Marsh and delicious subtleties of Anita Loos, with her hu mor and satire, are attractive features of the "Wharf Rat," a Triangle Teature of Ban Francisco's waterfront, which yesterday opened an engagement at the Columbia Theater. Miss Marsh spends most of her time in the photoplay in the disguise of a boy. In most actresses such garb la only tolerated, but this quaint . little girl makes you like It. While the story has many elements of sympathetic ap peal, the major ingredient Is comedy, with Spotttewoode Aitken. extracting much humor from his role of grand father, and Josephine Crowell, as the stepmother, being responsible for many laughs when she lapses into a regular lowbrow when peeved. The story tells of Polly, who with her grandfather rune away from hyer stepmother, who conducts a ludicrous school for child culture and spiritual development. The old man believes that he is a murderer and disguises the girl as a boy to prevent Identification. Romance enters the girl's life via Ed die Douglas, who hates woman, and tells her so. Kddie thiaks she's a boy, but ot last when she stands revealed to him in her true colors and clothes he says good-by to woman-hating. And, of course, the old man hasn't committed murder after all. "Two Small Town Romeos," with Ed die Lyons and Lee Moran as chiefs of mirth, is a rural comedy of many laughs. "Bobby Bear," an animal spe cialty fer children, and a r.ews pic torial are also on the programme. Peoples. "The Traveling. Salesman," Frank Mclntyre's "year ' 'round Christmas" comedy-drama, which has pleased hun dreds of thousands of patrons of the spoken drama, has started upon a fresh career of entertainment. Transferred to the screen, the story of the "knight of the grip" has lost none of its charm," thanks to the capable work of Mr. Mc Intyre and his supporting players, to gether with many' really funny sub tleties. What the story has lost in cleverness of lines, if indeed it has lost at all, is more than made up in backgrounds, with a snow-covered earth that carries with it real holiday conviction. Mclntyre makes his first film ap pearance in a role with which he is perfectly familiar from his long stage experience in "The Traveling Sales man." He is a "plump and pleasing" traveling salesman, one Bob Blake, who is carried past his station on Christmas morning and finds himself in Grand Crossing whatever or wherever that Is. 'There is only one Interesting sight in town, and that belongs to a young girl, who peeps at him from behind the window or xne leiegrapn onice. Bob predicts for himself a day of in tense boredom, but is soon mixed up in the stormiest affair of his career. He discovers that the girl, Beth, owns land to be eold for taxes, and that small-town schemers are planning to get the property, and then sell it to the railroad at a huge profit. So Bob takes a hand in the affair, beats the villain to the courthouse, and buys the property, only to find himself accused of all of the crimes In the calendar. However, he finally emerges victorious, saves the land for the girl, and wins the hand of the lass. A Black Diamond comedy and Sellg Tribune News complete the bill. Screen Gossip.
