THE MORNING OltEGONIAN, WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 20, 1916. 17 HEW UMPiR PLEASING E RULE TO FANS Short Stands in Various Cities Give Hope for Relief if Decisions Seem Bad. HONOLULU TRIP POSSIBLE McCredies Seriously Dickering With Regard to Taking Beavers . to Hawaiian Islands for Spring Training Camp. Tha new Coast League rule on um pires Is likely to prove a solution of the trouble from which Salt Lake seemed tp suffer for a painful spell last year. Th new rule provides that umpires are not to remain on one stand longer than two weeks. Heretofore the same umpires have continued in one town three or four weeks when the schedule called for extended series. The new rule works in this fashion: If a two weeks' series is scheduled for Portland, for example, the two um pires assigned to -work the pames are to remain there two weeks, but if the schedule calls for three or four weeks there Is to be a change of umpires. In a three-weeks' series one pair will either work the first week and then move on or worJc the first and second, or the second and third weeks as the case may be. In this way umpires will not be stationed in one town longer than a fortnight. It is assumed that the fans can stand almost anything for two weeks if they are -assured of re lief after' that. Naturally, a weekly change of umpires would be even more desirable, but too expensive. What caused this rule o be adopted at the annual meeting was the trouble "Red" Held had at Salt Lake toward the close of last season. The fiery domed official was there with "Kitty" Brashear for a three-weeks' stand. The breaks were going against Salt Lake at a time when a spurt was needed, and the fans seemed to believe that Held was handing them some thinsr. Held declared In Portland the week after leaving the Utah metropolis that boys in the stand sold small rocks Which were pelted at him. When It was announced yesterday that Portland may do its 1917 training in Kanaka land, it caused no little discussion among local fans. This Is not near as improbable as it seems. The two McCredies said yesterday that the Beavers would make the trip if the Honolulu people would guarantee expenses. The fact that 3000 was deposited in a San Francisco bank to assure the Charley Swain All-Americans their ex penses, and the stories that came later from the islands to the effect that the expenses were made in the first two games, makes It reasonable to believe that the Hawaiians may come through. B. A. Wood, representing B. O. Hall & Sons, of Honolulu, is dickering with the Portland owners. E. O. Hall & Sons handle A. G. Spalding & Bros.' goods in the islands and Mr. Wood is the truest of L. A. Spangler. manager of the Portland Spalding branch. Mr. Wood will be here for a few days yet. 13. O. Hall & Sons, of Honolulu, is a big concern, and as this firm is behind the project It seems substantial. The- trip to Honolulu, if made, would take up ' five weeks. About 30 pas timers would leave San Francisco around February 15. Five days oft the boat each way would have to be Bpent in coming and going. This would al low about three and a half weeks of training. There would not be much traveling necessary to make the trip a profitable one if the "barnstorming" of Swain's All-Stars can be taken as any criterion. Swain's stars have played most of their -games right 'in Honolulu. There are several strong teams there. The negro infantry boys who walloped the stars in the only game they have lost on their trip is the most formidable: Four Sunday games would be on the schedule. Mr. Wood will 'go from here to Seattle and eventually land in Chicago, his destination, on this business trip. He wrote to his company at Honolulu Monday night telling it under what conditions the Beavers would make the trip. A letter from B. O. Hall & Sons is expected within two weeks by the McCredies. Burns says that when he left Aus tralia Jimmy Clabby was preparing to take the boat on December for San Krancisco and that previous to Darcy'a disappearance Clabby was chummy with the Australian. "From what I learned not only in conversation with Darcy. but from inti - mate friends, it was Jimmy Clabby who inaucea uarcy to leave Aiieiraiia, and A personally believe that it was Jimmy Clabby who arranged all details in re Kard to Darcy's departure as a stow away on the ship Hattie Luckenback, says Burns. "In their laat fight," continues the local man. "Darcy and Clabby fought more like brothers having a dance, and it wasn't anything like the arguments they had before. It was Clabby who showed Darcy where the Australian fight promoters were coining money olf him ana had him tied in a knot be cause the military authorities wouldn't let Darcy get a passport to get out. "Am to what kind of a fighter Darcy is, all I can say. concludes Burns, "is that he will surprise the United States more than Fitzsimmons ever did. He's a marvel, that's all, and only a kid at that." Albany, does not truly represent the high schools of the state, according to Virgil Fendall. former O. A. C. athlete, coach of the Pendleton High School eleven. "It would be more neatly cor rect." said Coach. Fendall, "to call Coach Hudson's selection an all-Willamette Valley team for he has not picked a single player outside the val ley. "I believe that tne following all Eastern Oregon eleven could defeat any Willamette. Valley team that the best critics. can select: Ulrick, Pendle ton, quarterback and captain; Whip ple.
