Jeffrey, Democratic nominee, .was a distant third with 9852 votes. Albert Stre4ff. Socialist, polled 2127 votes. Gate n Lead Is C376. Final unofficial returns have brought he majority -.for "W. N. Gatono, Demo cratic candidate for re-election as Judge of Department Nt. 5 of, the Cir cuit Court, to 5376 votes over Frank S. Grant, Republican. Catena Is trie only Democrat elected to office tn Multnomah County. His vote is 39,905; that for Gfrant is 84,529. Final returns have swelled the ma jority for Joihn P. Kavanaugh, Repub lican nominee for re-election as Judge of Department No. 1 of; tlie Circuit Court, to 11,576 votes over Greenberry !W. Allen, his' Democratic- opponent. Kavanaugh, has 42,048 votes to 20,508 tor Allen. Lewis Is Short-Term Senator. Herman A. Lewis has been elected short-term State Senator from Mult nomah, Clackamas and Columbia coun ties. Hlsmajority is 8516 in this county over Dr. H..M. Patton. Both are from Multnomah County and both are Re publicans; Chough on the bajlot as In dependents, owing to a. peculiarity of the primary.' law. The vote for Lewis Is 88,516 to 25,000 even for Dt. Patton. Barton Defeats Limpmani, For Joint Representative from Mult nomah and Ciackamas countieis A. H. Burton, Republican, has received a ma jority in this county of 11,238 votes over Rex- H. Lampman, Democrat, and Is elected. The.Multnomah County. -te for Burton is 39,337 to 28,099 for Lamp man.. ' All the other Republican legislative candidates from this county. Including one short-term State Senator, five long term State Senators and 12 Representa tives, have been elected by big ma jorities. John M.- Mann, for Represen tative, with 52,381 votes. Is high man on the ticket. Tamcll Is Bis. "Winner. Complete returns give George Taz well (Rep.) a majority of 16,849. votes over George M. McBride for County Judge. Tazwell's vote is 44,797 to 27. 948 for McBride. A contest in which much Interest was taken was that for County Clerk be tween Joseph "W. Beverldge (Rep.) and Marshall N. Dana (Ind.). Beveridge's majority is 10,265. His vote- is 40,479. Dana's vote Is 30,214. . . Three Measure Defeated. 4 Of the. 11 initiative njcaaufes on the ballot, all but three have received affirmative majorities In Multnomah County. The three exceptions are the1 single tax measure, the brewers' amendment and bone-dry prohibition. Single tax. under the disguised bal lot title of "full rental land tax and home makers' loan fund amendment," has been snowed under in Multnomah County by a- negative vote of 3 to 1. The majority against it is 33.190. Only 15,795 votes were cast for it, to 48,985 against. Beer Amendment Margin Close. The brewers' amendment has lost by a small majority in Multnomah County. With 35,592 votes, for and 37,361 against, the negative majority is 1769. Tho bone-dry prohibition amendment received a negative majority of 9775 Votes in Multnomah! County. The vote -against it was 41.057 to 31,282 in its favor. "; The measures that carried in Mult nomah County are- the repeal of the Eunday closing blue- law;. 6 per cent state-wide tax limitation, rural credits, anti-compulsory vaccination, Pendleton normal school,, negro, suffrage amend ment, ship tax exemption and single item veto. This latter measure received the heaviest affirmative majority. 32,886 more voters having voted for than against it. The affirmative vote is 48, S0, the negative vote 15,794. Next in popular favor came the ship tax exemption measure, with a favor able majority of 32,748. Affirmative votes 47,717, negative 14.969. - Third in line of public approval in , Multnomah County was the reDeal- of the ancient Sunday blue law. Propo nents of. repeal and a cheerful, Sunday rolled up an affirmative majority- of 28,734 votes. The vote for repeal is 50,724. against 21,990. The so-calledr negro suffrage amend ment,, the purpose of-which is to re peal a long-inoperative section of the state constitution denying suffrage to negroes, has 12,771 Sejority in Mult nomah County. This section became automatically Inoperative when the 15th amendment to the Federal Con stitution was adopted, but has never been repealed. Vote for repeal 38,915, against 26,144. Normal School In Favor. The Pendleton Normal School meas ure has an affirmative majority of 6146. Vote for. the normal 36,610, against 30,464. Anti,-compulsory vaccination has car ried in the county by 5820 votes. Affirm ative vote 36,233, negative 30.413. Rural credits has a favorable ma jority of 5455. Affirmative vote 33,910, negative 28.455. State-wide tax limitation has car ried in the county by 6123 votes. Affirm ative vote 33,742, negative 27.619.
