FIGURES SEND CHICAGO UP Hlg AdTance In Options Brings Out Realizing Sales, bat Session Closes With Gain of Nearly 4 1-3 Cents Coarse Grains TTp, -CHICAGO, Oct. 23. World crop shortage, estimated at 23 per cent as compared with the yield In 1915. sent wheat prices higher and higher today as much at times as 5o a bushel. The close was unsettled at 1.74 for December and Lb4&1.84 for May. with the market as a whole showing gatna of lc to 4 So net. Other leading staples, roo, all scored an advance, corn lo to 2c, oats 2 to IE 4c and provisions 15c to XI. 10. Whest traders were confronted right at the outset with ths startling figures in regard to the world's shortage in supplies. In this connection suthoritles were quoted to show that the United states had already sold to Europe aa much wheat as could be comfortable spared and that a prospec tive dearth was becoming mors apparent dally. Attempts to foiee a setback from ths day's top level la wbee prices were vigor ously pressed late In the session on the ground that there had been aa advance of more than 18 cents a bushel last week, but buying orders around 11.74 wars altogether too numerous to permit sales below that value In this respect the bull side of ths market was helped by tha fact that the domestlo vlstble supply enlargement was only about half as much aa we&s the case a year ago. Transactions for the day were said to have been morsthan double ths usual volume. Corn rose to the highest prices sines the Civil War. No. 2 yellow for immediate de livery touching S1.01 a bushel. Trading in futures was on a hi g scale, with shorts pur chsslng freely, influenced to a considerable extent by bullish crop newa from Argentlaa and by sympathy with the bulge in wheat. Oata. like corn and wheat, were notably active and at times excited. The upward movement of prices was stimulated by as sertions that export sales of oats for ths dsy amounted to the hugs total of fully 2,000,000 bushels. Provisions advanced' with grain to ths hlgiivst prices yet this season. Lard, which apparently is in snarp demand for Europs. took the lead in the general upturn.
