Alleged shipments of liquor into Clarke County without permits and placing: of permits on such packages that had been used before, caused Sheriff Biesecker and Prosecuting: At torney Blair to raid the office of the American Express Company. in this city today. They found two packages containing- two quart bottles of whisky each, without any permit attached to them., and two packages of two quart bottles of whisky bearing labels which, the officers say, indicated that they had been removed from the package on which they were originally placed and attached to another. An empty carton with the label removed was also taJcen. For several months suoh shipments have been suspected, the officers say, but owing to lack of evidence no action was taken. A summons, citing the company to appear in court, was served on C. L. Shaeller, the local agent. 2000 ATTEND ONTARIO FAIR Weiser Expected to Send Big Delega tion. Today. ONTARIO, Or., Sept. 21 (Special.) Two thousand paid single admissions today made a new attendance record for the Malheur County Fair. In the 2:10 pace a new track: record of 2:14 was marked up. Tomorrow, the closing- day. will be Weiser day with a band and delega tion from the Idaho town. Prairie Chickens Scarce. WALLA WALLA. Wash.. Sept. 20. (Special.) The County Game Commis sion is considering having the entire county closed to prairie chicken shoot ing for three years. So many chickens were killed by the cold last Winter that there practically are none to be found In the county, . . WASCO FAIR SUCCESS CROWDS ARE LARGE AND DIS PLAYS ARE EXCELLENT. School Exhibit One f Meat Interest Ins; Features Dancing- on Streets Proves Popular. THE DALLES, Or., Sept. 21, (Spe cial.) The 28th- annual fair of Wasco County is now in full swing: Crowds dally are pouring in and now the suc cess of the fair is assured. Tester day's programme went off without a hitch and was composed of real ex citing; events. The motorcycle races were well atfeended. as were the In dian races. The Warm Springs and Takima In dians came prepared -for a great time and brought a large band of racing animals with them. They are among the most enthusiastic at the track. Jackson Spooks, an aged "medicine man," was the main attraction at the war dance which was staged by the Warm Springs Indians yesterday. He is claimed by the tribe as the cham pion war dancer of the world. The street sports are run off every day and are enjoyed, by all.-' Thje even ing attractions are good and an ab sence of the fakirs is noticed. The shows are all clean. Dancing on the streets has proved popular and an im mense crowd is enjoying that new nov elty. The exhibits are wonderful and are drawing many words of praise from visitors. The manner In which they are displayed are freely commented upon, as the committee has brought out all the finest samples of fruit, vegeta bles and grain. The art section is crowded all the time and a mora beautiful display of hand work, needle craft and home canning has never been exhibited in any past fair. . The school exhibit is one of the most interesting at the fair. It is 'under the direction of County Superintendent Bonney, who is receiving much praise for the display. The Tygh Valley display was placed in the pavilion and Is attracting well earned attention. Tomorrow is The Dalles day. All business houses will close during the afternoon and everybody will turn out and see that every visitor is enter tained. Owing to the f act - that the farmers are only half through the threshing season, the attendance from the rural districts is not as large as usual. - The Dalles band is rendering splendid music for the occasion. RECRUITERS AT PENDLETON National Guard Captain Will Talk to Roand-TJn Crowds. LA GRANDE, Or, Sept. 21. (Spe cial.) For six days, beginning tomor row. Captain Lee Clark, of Portland, who has maintained Eastern Oregon headquarters in La Grande while combing this section for the National Guard, will be located in Pendleton. He takes with him one private and leaves a detail of two noncommissioned officers to take care of the local of fice during his absence. A detail of two men passed a week in Wallowa County towns, returning tonight. Cap tain Clark wants to take advantage of the Round-up crowds to talk up enlistments. Bend Deposits Gain. BEND, Of.. Sept. it. (Special.) A gain in deposits of nearly S16Q.000 is shown by the First National Bank of Bend in a summary of its statement of condition prepared in answer to the recent call from the Controller of the Currency. The bank now has deposits of $662,859.25 as against $413,205.13 on June 30, the date of the last previous call. OLD RESIDENT IS DEAD Mrs. M. A. White, Formerly of Day ton, Passes at Baker. BAKER." Or.. Sept. 21. (Special.) Mrs. Margaret A. White, of Sumpter. died at St. Elizabeth's Hospital today. Mrs. White was well known through out the Sumpter district, where she resided 16 years. She was born in Iowa 80 years ago. With her husband she crossed the plains in 1862. and settled at Dayton. Wash., living there until she went to Sumpter. She is survived by seven children. Mrs. F. Fall, William and John White, of Dayton: Mrs. Byron Weatherford and George White, of Sumpter: Mrs. Will iam Schroeder, of Vacaville, Cal and Mrs. E. McCall Rubens, of Idaho. The body was sent tonight to Day ton, where the funeral will be held.
