old welterweight favorite who has just
returned from a series 'of motorboat
races in the East. Groat is one of the
best pilots of motorboats in the entire
country, and Is a good boxer. Ping
Bodie was supposed to appear against

has been called off.
A return match between "Toughey"

Osteopath Declares Drug Is

Numerous Ailments.
PAIN CENTERS PUT ASLEEP
Dr. Reed Kellogg Tells Members
of Profession That Nerve Zones
Can Bo Controlled and Even
Toothaches Fade Away.
Remarkable results attained In the
practice of zonetherapy, or pressure
anaesthesia, whereby pressure on &
finger, a toe, the tongue, or perhaps a
shoulder, relieves pain In another part
Of the body in the same nerve zone,
were described by Dr. Reed Kellogg, an
osteopathic physician, of Providence,
R. I., before a meeting of the Portland
Osteopathic Association in the Morgan
building last night
Dr. Kellogg for the past three years
has conducted much research work In
pressure anaesthesia. His audience
last night, including many osteopaths
from through the state, was especially
intere'sted In what he said of its suc
cessful use In childbirth cases.
"We have heard a great deal of late
about twilight sleep," he said, "but I
think we have secured a method in
pressure anaesthesia that Is much bet
ter in every way. It produces absence
of pain, but at the same time secures
relaxation which lets the birth proceed
normally."
Painless Birth Obtained.
He cited instances of mothers, treat
ed by zonetherapy, who have refused
at nrst to believe that their children
had been born, so free from pain had
they been. He also described, the tech
nique by which pressure was exerted
on the hands and feet of the mother at
childbirth to relieve the pains.
The action of pressure anaesthesia.
as explained by Dr. Kellogg, seemed to
be much like that of a leg that "goes
to sleep" when crossed over the other
leg, zonetherapy being & sclentifie
method of putting pain centers to
sleep.
Dr. Kellog went on to declare that
zonetherapy not only relieved pain, but
In many instances was an effective
measure in the cure pf certain dis
eases. Among others, he cited in
stances where cures or great relief had
been given in deafness, brachial neu
ritis, sciatica, lumbago, toothache.
headaches hay fever and others.
Seasickness May Be Relieved.
'It seems funny, perhaps, to be able
to relieve headaches or toothaches
merely by pressure on a finger of the
patient." said Dr. Kellogg, "but this
has been done time and again. In
case after case of lumbago, the patient
has not failed to get relief by holding
a comb in his hand as directed.
'In hay fever remarkable results
have been obtained. Nausea and sea
sickness, with its corollary, car sick
ness, are particularly susceptible to
treatment by zonetherapy. There isn't
any part of the tody you cannot reach
by appropriate pressure on the fingers."
Demonstrations Are Given.
Dr. Kellog- illustrated his lecture
witn numerous etereonticon sliden.
Following his lecture, he answered
many questions from his intensely in
terested audience and demonstrated his
tecnnique, in some cases.
Dr. Kellogg is here in the course, of
a lecture tour through the country, at
wnicn ne explains pressure anaesthesia
to osteopathic physicians. He is stay
ing at the Portland, and will give
runner demonstrations of the zone
therapy treatment today and tomor
row. .
