THE 3IOHNIXG OEEGOXIAN, TITdRSDAY, AUGUST 10, 191C. PYTHIAN MEETING BROUGHT TO CLOSE j. J. Brown, Installed as Su preme Chancellor, Heads Party to Tacoma. DELEGATES START HOME was promptly created and as promptly sat isfied. Especially do we commend his excellency the Governor of the great commonwealth of Oregon and bis honor the Mayor of the beautiful city of Portland for the warmth and sincerity of their welcome, the local committee for the incomparable and un bui passed character of the entertainment furnished us, the committees of Astoria and Seaside, who so thoroughly provided for our wants and our comforts. To Brother Gus C. Moser and his col leagues we have nothing but the highest mead of unstinted praise and congratula tions for the perfect and admirable manner 111 which we have been Tecelved. The trip to Bonneville, the Columbia River Highway, "where we lost ourselves In the Infinite main where rolls the Ore gon." are among other diversions and pleas ures never to be forgotten, and so long as time shall last we shall cherish the memory or our visit to Portland, and shall ever recall with feelings akin to delight and enthusiasm the ungrudging hospitality, the broad char ity, the liberal mlndedness and the splendid- fraternalism of the Pythians of Ore gon. Be It further Resolved. That we acknowledge with un abashed satisfaction the disinterested de- Portland Ses ion Regarded One of Most Important and Success . ful In History of Order. Budget Is Voted. The Knights of yfchias supreme lodge convention came to a. close last evening after a series of intermittent sessions continuing over a. - period of ten dqrys. It was regarded as one of the most Important and most successful supreme lodge meetings In the history of the oroer. tub visiting delegates and mem bers of their families accompanying them were unanimous in voicing their appreciation of the entertainment and the hospitality extended them by the people of Portland, and particularly by the local members of the Knights of Pythias and the Pythian sisters. The report of the resolutions commit tee extended cordial compliments to the city of Portland, the people, the local Pythians, the newspapers, the ho tels and all other agencies instrumen tal in providing entertainment for the visitors. J. I. Brown Supreme Head. The convention came to a close with the installation of officers, which was the last order of business immediately preceding adjournment. John J. Brown, of Vandalia, 111., took the oath of office aa supreme chancellor and now is the head of the order, numbering nearly 725.000 members. Another procedure of interest was the passage of the general appropria tion bill carrying funds for the con duct of the supreme lodge's affairs during the ensuing biennium. The budget carried an appropriation of J10.000 for Pythian education. The Idea, is to disseminate knowledge of Pythlanism throughout the United States and Canada, so that the general public may have a better understanding of the aims and the purposes of the or ganization. Indirectly it Is anticipated that this movement, will result in a substantial increase of membership. George B. Griggs, of Houston, Tex., was appointed chairman of the committee in charge of this work. $500 Given for Monument An appropriation of $500 for a monument to the late Henry Clay Berry, past supreme chancellor of the order, also was authorized. The money will be used in connection with a similar amount appropriated by the grand lodge of Illinois. The convention finally adjourned without taking any action on the tuber culosis sanitarium question. This means that the situation will remain as it is. The individual state-lodges will con tinue to care for their tubercular suf ferers, and there is a. tendency to con tinue this arrangement indefinitely, as it is widely believed among the Pythi ans that the state organizations are adequately able to do it. Most ol the -visiting delegates left for their homes last night. A large party, headed by Supreme Chancellor Brown, -went to Tacoma to participate in the initiation ceremonies arranged by tne Tacoma Pythians to be held on the summit of Mount Rainier. Gratitude in ungrudging measure was heaped upon the people of Port land and numerous Portland inetitu tions yesterday by the Supreme Lodge of Knights of Pythias. At the closing session of the au preme lodge convention a set of resolutions testifying to the pleasures and appreciation of the Portland en tertainment was presented by the resolutions committee and unanimous ly adopted. The committee was headed by Will iam G. Ed ens. of Chicago. The other members were: David P. Reece, of Pennsylvania; Richard I. Warner, of Wisconsin; Frank K. Duncan, of Okla homa, and Edgar W. The resolutions in full follow: "Embodying the appreciation of the Su preme Lodge for the regal entertainment accorded It by the Pythians of the great West upon its journey to and advent la tne city of Portland.
