Science Comes to Aid of
Bootlegger.
Bonded Fluid Extracted Through
Bottom of Bottle and Home
' Brewed Product Returned.
SCIENCE cast her cold, gray eye upon
the benevolesjt bootlegger. She
winked an almost imperceptible wink.
Whereupon the bootlegger smiled en
gagingly, and cast the butt of his cigar
ette away.
"I get yuh!- he briefly observed.
He summoned the Demon Alcohol, and
confined that choice spirit in a cooking
kettle, dosing him liberally with prune
Juice, raisin extract and weird chemical
compounds. From the sink faucet he
drew the mountain water of Bull Run,
and crused it to a profitable con
fluence with the brew in his kettle.
As he stirred the mixture the boot
legger whistled blithely, for he and
Science had yet another card np their
sleeves.
From the cobwebs of a closet the
bootlegger brought forth the carton
from San Francisco, containing various
quarts of choice bottled-in-bond whis
ky. He shifted a crafty glance about
the room. The blinds were drawn
closely.
The bootlegger operated on the bot
tles. With fine craftsmanship and appro
priate tools he cut a circle of glass
from the bottom of each bottle. Gently
he Jolted the circle free. With the
smile of your true artist he poured out
the bottled-in-bond, carefully retaining
it In a gallon Jug.
This'll do- fer me," Bald the boot
legger, and found time to return the
wink of his patroness.
He refilled the bottles with the
nameless brew from the kettle, replaced
the circle of glass and deftly brazed It
in place by an electrical process.
Two hours later the bootlegger sold
a quart of "genuine bottled-in-bond"
for 83 to a thirsty logger in the North
End. An hour later, the patrol wagon
received a fighting, cursing "jag," and
the logger sobered slowly to stand be
fore the Municipal Court.
This is the story of the bootlegger's
compact with Science, and Desk faer-
Keant Harvey Thatcher, at the Police
station, will show you. if you are curl
ous. any number of confiscated bottles
of alleged bonded liquor, the seals
bright and unbroken. But the bottom
of each bottle bears the circle of the
bootlegger's artistic "double cross."

TWO PRISONERS CHARGED
Men Captured With Boat at Astoria
Are Accused of Bringing; Bot
tled Wares From Canada and
Evading Customs Duties.
On a technical charge of bringing
Into the United States merchandise on
which there was duty, without paying
the duty, Charles F. Robinson, a sailor,
but graduate of a university In Scot
land, and Charles J. Bertelson, are held
in the County Jail in Portland follow
ing their arrest in Astoria Sunday.
They were captured by United States
Customs officers 09 suspicion that they
have been bringing liquors into this
country from Victoria, B. C. They will
have a preliminary hearing before
United States Commissioner Drake at
2 o'clock tomorrow.
The Government has evidence to
show that they made five trips be
tween Victoria and Astoria. Or., in a
26-foot Columbia River fisherman's
boat having only a 7-horsepower en
gine, and that each time they brought
full cargo of liquors on the little
boat, which they disposed of at Astoria
at a huge profit.
in tne rive tripe, ins government is
prepared to show, they imported be
tween 1700 and 2000 quarts of liquors,
for which they paid 65 cents a bottle
at Victoria, selling them for $2.25 a
bottle In Astoria.
The little boat was brought to Port
land yesterday from Astoria. Robert
R. Rankin. Assistant United States At
torney, who is In charge of the case for
the Government, will file a libel action
in a day or two for the forfeiture of
the boat to the Government on the
ground that it has been used in smug
gling operations.
Two charges probably will be pressed
against the alleged smugglers, one
charge being that they Imported
liquors from Canada without paying
duty on them, and the other being that
they imported glassware, meaning the
bottles in which the liquor was im-
porte. without paying duty on it.
Neither Robinson nor Bertelson
would discuss the case yesterday. They
declared they were innocent and Rob
inson said he hadn't even been in Brit
ish Columbia. A purse containing
Canadian coins, however, and a chart
of the Washington coast were taken
from him.
