Aug". 3 Semi-finals were reached in the Pacific Northwest ern tennis championships at the close of today's play in all divisions. To morrow In the men's singles Strachan will play Kelleher. and Marcus will meet Curley. In the women's singles Miss Myers will meet Miss Frazier and Miss Baker will contest for a place in the finals with Miss Livingston. In the men's doubles Karskey and Brown will play Curley and Barber, while Strachan and Marcus will meet Pringle and Burrill. In the women's doubles the two sets of contestants will be Mrs. Bragdon and Miss Livingston vs. Mrs. Cushing and Miss Fording, and Miss Myers and Miss Baker vs. Miss McDonald and Miss A. Green. In the mixed doubles Miss Dempsey and Strachan will play Miss Myers and Barber, while Miss Baker and Curley will play Miss Livingston and Kelleher. In today's play the California con testants again were strongly to the fore. It has become the habit to faint on the tennis courts in Tacoma. M-iss Frye, of Seattle, fainted this afternoon in the mixed doubles match while playing with Mansell Smith against Anita Mey ers and Allyn Barber. Miss Frye and Smith defaulted the match to their clever opponents. Billy Sullivan's -remark that Guisto is not as fast as Harry Heilmann has raised a. storm of criticism among the fans. even James j. Kicnardson, the Port land scout, who discovered Heilmann - and signed him for the Beavers, admits that Guisto is much faster than Heil mann. Fans In San Francisco believe that Cliff Blankenship is just about ready to start his final dash for the Dennant. Of course he does not say so, but he intimates that the Salt Lake club is ready to make a bigr drive right up to the top. Dave Lewis, of the Crawford team, took high honors with an average of 103 miles an hour. Oldfield, with his Delage, arrived last night and with Ralph DePalma in a Mercedes will qualify tomorrow after noon. Fiddle Bic ken backer, in & Max well, stepped at a 100-mile clip. Dea lene and Milton in a-Deusenberg, and Henderson In a Maxwell, came near that figure. Fourteen drivers are entered and the lowest speed shown today was 85 miles an Hour. Joe Domlnguez, who boxes under the nom de guerre of Joe Gorman, and who was known in Oakland and San Fran- isco during the days of the old four round game as Kid Nabisco, meets Billy Mascott in the headline event of the show which will be put on at the Rose City Athletic Club, East First and East Morrison, streets, tonight. when this diminutive Spanish ath lete crawls through the ropes tonight will be getting a chance for which he has been waiting since May 1 that chance is the opportunity of swap ping punches with Mascott. It was on the night of May 1 that Gorman and Frankie Malone and Harold Broom, who acted as the trainer of the pair, rolled into Portland. Malone became disgusted within a few weeks at not being able to get a match and departed for S&ni Francisco with Broom. But Gorman stuck. He has walloped Bobby Martin, Stanley Reeves and Jockey Bennett two times ince arriving here, and on the side took a trip to Raymond. Wash., and lam-banged through a six-round draw with Earl Conners, of Tacoma. This boy has participated in 85 en counters since he started to box in January, 1314. A win over Johnny Arrousez, of Los Angeles, is on his book He has lost but twice and then decisions to Eddie James and the vet eran, Jimmy Carroll. If Joe fails to get better than a draw or loses to Mascott he will remain here for a few days seeking a return match ith Billy, but if 1e wins the little Oaklander will hike for home to visit his folks and attend night school. He says he can land a job with a ship building concern in Oakland. He will return here next Winter for a few en gagements. 'I feel fine, said Gorman last night. Farren hails from San Fran cisco and has met many of the good boys in that city. 30 ENTER FOB SWIM 24 Men and 6 Women to Race in Willamette Marathon. COURSE THREE MILES LONG Boats to Accompany Athletes in Long Event to Give Aid If Needed. Only Amateurs Permitted to Take Part In Contest. Thirty entries already have been re ceived for the third annual Willamette River marathon slated for August 1 under the direction of Jack Cody, instructor of the Multnomah Amateur Athletic Club. Twenty-four swimmers will race for the men's trophies, while six mermaids have entered for the three-mile swim. The start will be made from the main float at the Oregon Yacht Club, near the Oaks, and the finish -will be made at the Kellogg boathouse at the foot of Salmon street. Several changes have been made In the handling of the 1816 event from the way the last two races were conducted. Boats to Accompany Racers. The swim will start at 11 o'clock In the morning, so that the contestants will not be in the water during the heat of the afternoon. Each competitor in the race must have a rowboat or canoe to accompany him to give such aid and attention as circumstances may demand. Failure on the part of the prospec tive starters to comply with these rules will be considered sufficient cause to reject their entries. The attendants shall, during the progress of the swim, remain behind their entry or far enough ahead to prevent pace making. Alf Mast Bo Amateurs. Members of the Portland Motorboat Club and their many friends will spend Saturday and Sunday at Magoon's Park on the Upper Willamette "River in the annual picnic. Games of all kinds have been arranged for the programme. The first flotilla will leave the Port land Motorboat Club moorings tomor row, but the main division will Journey up the river at 9:30 o clock Sunday morning. Several motorboat races will bo run off to determine the club cham pionships. Sparing of Tree Is Asked. ROSEBURG, Or., Aug. 3. (Special.) (Special.) Petitions will be placed in circulation here within the next few days, asking the Federal Government to spare the only tree now on Cass street. The tree is located directly in front of the site for the new Federal building, and will be cut down unless the Government officials grant the re quest of the women who are sponsor for the move to have the "ornament" preserved. BRIDGE TOWER COMPLETED Removal of Falsewort Is Qegrun on Interstate Span. VANCOUVER, Wash., Aug-. S. (Spe cial.) The first of the bis towers for the lift span of the Interstate bridge was completed today, the cables all placed over the sheaves and attached to the span and the counterweights. The falsework and derrick were par tially Temoved to the other end of the span to erect the second tower. Two or three days will be required for the removal. Three weeks will see the second tower completed, it is believed.
