THOUSAND TONS ARE SOLD Advances of 50 Cents to $1 on Iocal Board Portland Wheat Market Again on Dollar Basis. New Crop Bids. The feed grains were the feature of the market yesterday. An Improved demand developed, and 1000 tons were old at the noon session of the Merchants Exchange at firm prices. The sales posted wcje: 200 tons July oats 'Sl'SIi fioo tons September oats 7, . l 800 tons September -barley 28.00 The July oats price was a dollar better than was bid at Saturdays session. For August delivery bids were raised 60 cents. nd there -was a similar advance In barley bids. . It was reported there was some export demand for oats, and there was also ex pectation of Government buying. In con nection with the barley strength there was n advance in December barley at San Fran cisco to $30. The firmness of last week's wheat market was again apparent at the opening of the week's business. Offers for prompt blue stem -were raised 1 cent, which once more Jut the market on the dollar basis. Spot club bids were also raised 1 cent. August wheat waa unchanged. September bids were Vosted as follows: Bluestem, 92 cents; fortyfold, S5 cents; club and fife, 83 cents; red Russian. SI cents. Foreign wheat crop conditions are given ty Brooxnhall as follows: United Kingdom Crop outlook for all cereals Is not satisfactory and weather is unseasonable. Native offers lighter and for eign arrivals smaller. France The outlook for wheat shows no change, as weather Is unfavorable and crop prospects are very moderate. Oats prospects viave Improved. New wheat Is expected soon. Germany Weather keeps unseasonable. Berlin admits of lateness but no damage, but it is generally believed that crop out look Is poor. Austria-Hungary Latest neutral reports state that weather is unseasonableand crops backward, but no mention is made in the way of confirming serious damage. Russia. tMuny reports are coming of de terioration. Our agents at various points contend that crop prospects are not good, 1th rather serious acreage loss and unsat isfactory developments owing to various causes Incident upon the war. Argentina Weather not favorable and some complaints from wheat. Practically nothing offered to United Kingdom. India -Food grains appear satisfactory. Moisture is deficient and the soil very dry for later cultivation. Wheat Is not being offered for shipment. Italy Harvesting Is progressing, and es timates point to a fair yield. Import re quirements are forecasted as large. Spain Weather favorable end harvesting reported as good, with new grain appearing. LEWISTON. Idaho. July IT. (Special.) Charles H. Green, a wool buyer of Portland, representing New Jersey Interests, yesterday purchased the wool clips of the Madden estate and Steve Hepton, the price being 24 cents per pound. The Madden estate clip win amount to about 22.300 pounds and the Hepton clip is about 16,000 pounds. Mr. t.reen Is aleo negotiating for about 100.000 pounds of wool belonging to river sheepmen now stored in the Snake River dock. Included in this lot are the clips of c J. Hall, so.ooo pounds: Cleve Halsey, 28. 000 pounds; John Piatt, IS. 000 pounds, and Mickey Bros., 2S.00O pounds. It is stated these clipa are of the coarse variety. i wool cup in the Lewlston country this year will amount to about 1.000.000 rounds, and will bring into the district no less than 230.ooo. The clips enumerated above constitute the big lots remaining un sold, and It is expected these will be mar keted within tha next several days. FRESH Tl'RLOCK CANTALOUPE ARRIVE One Car in Fine Condition, Another Green and Turned Down. Two ears of Turlock cantnJoupes, the first of the season, arrived yesterday. One car was in good condition and was put on sale at 3.S0 per standard crate. The other car was green and it was turned down. A mixed car of California deciduous fruits was unloaded, containing plnma at tl.SOtt 1.T5. peaches at 75cg-l, and pears at 2 I.2K. Rains on Sunday prevented Verry picking and no fresh stock was offered on the street. Rain Holds Back Hop Crop. The weather ts holding back the hop crop in this state, which at the present time is fully two weeks late. Not much complaint la beard ct vermin. Dealers are oUtrlng to contract the coming crop at cents. 11 to 114 EXTRA CUBE BUTTE R IS SCARCE Twenty-five Cents Is Paid at Produce Ex change Other Llnea Steady. Extra cube butter Is a scarce article on the local market, and for that reason bids were raised yesterday with sales at 25 cents at the Produce Exchange. Prime firsts sold at 24hi cents. Seconds were offered at 23 cents, with 22ft cents bid. Dairy butter sold at 21 cents. No egg sales were posted. There were offerings at 23 Vi cents, case count, with 23 cents bid. Tillamook triplet cheese was offered at 15 hi cents, with 15 cents bid!. Oregon trip lets offered at 15 cents, and 14 cents was bid. There was a good run of about 6500 head of stock at the North Portland yards yester day and an active market throughout the day. The hog strength was the feature of trad ing. In, this Hue the market gained a full quarter, which raised the rop to $9.05, but the bulk of the sales were at tha 9-cent market. Cattle held quite steady. A few bunches of nrimM steers were sold at $8 to $S.5. Butcher cattle moved within the last week's range. Sheep oflerlngs in the open market were light. Receipts were 2201 cattle. 23 calves. A number of Pendleton business men met last week to protest against the raise in Insurance rates In Pendleton ranging from IS to SO per cent. Two years, ago the rates were materially re duced here on account of the new grav ity water system and additional fire- fighting apparatus, and the merchants feel that the increase is an injustice. The insurance men declare that the losses the past five years have been so heavy that they cannot renew policies at the old rate.
