THE MOKNING OREGONIAN, FRIDAT, JUNE SO, 1916. 13 V PORTLAND HAS OilE GOLFER IN RACEVF.T Russell Smith Reaches Semi Finals at Spokane Wil helrri Loses to Ford. WAVERLEY WINS DAVIS CUP Ford and Smith Picked to Reach Finals Miss Agnes Ford and Mrs. Robert Wilson, Both of Seattle, to Play for Title. BY ROSCOE PAWCETT. BPOKAKE, Wash., June 29. (Spe cial.) Rudolph "mihelm, of the Port land Golf Club, was eliminated from the Pacific Northwest golf tournament by Paul Ford, of Seattle, today and the 1316 title now rests between Paul Ford, EX J. Barker, of Butte; O. W. Potter1; of Seattle, and Russell Smith, of Waverley. Toungr Ford and Russell Smith ap pear to be the next bests to show In. the finals. Ford's edg-e over Wllhelm today was 8 up and 2 to play despite the fact that most of the golfing wise acres were backing- Wllhelm to win. The Portland expert plainly was off his game. He was short on hl3 putting all day and, on the second nine, drove Into the roug-h four consecutive times. In spite of brilliant recoveries this er ratic driving and wobbly putting proved too big- a handicap. Ruesell Smith won his game from J. J. Dempsey, of Tacotna, In a 2 and 1 finish. It required a 2 on the 17th gTeen to clinch matters. Ford meets E. J. Barker, of Butte today In the semi-finals, 36 holes, and Russell Smith is aligned against O. W. Potter, of Seattle. Potter put him out of the Oregon championships at Port land three years ago. Title Goes to Scuttle. Another prime surprise today was the elimination of the Northwest women's champion, Mrs. T. B. Curran. of Taco ma, by Mrs. Robert Wilson, of Seattle. Miss Agnes Ford, also of Seattle, de feated Mrs. George Mayes, of Portland, in the other semi-finals, so Miss Ford and Mrs. Wilson will settle the cham pionship between themselves. Waverley Country Club's victory over the Seattle Golf Club Quartet In the Davis cup competition was an addi tional feature of the afternoon. This match, for possession of the magnifi cent trophy presented by C. H. Davis, Jr., of Portland, attracted a great amount of attention. Russell Smith and C. H. Davis, Jr., of Waverley, op posed Paul Ford and J. H. Ballinger, of Seattle, best ball of the four to count one point. Waverley finished two points up, due mainly to some wonder ful golf by Russell Smith, who scored a two on the ninth and threes on the 16th. 17th and ISth, two of them four par holes. Waverley Team Wins Match. Guy Standifer and Forest Watson ran up three additional points on George Tilden and O. W. Potter, so Waverley's total margin was five points. This competition will be an annual feature of the Northwest tourneys hereafter. Summary: Third round men's championship, IS holes: Paul Ford, Seattle, defeated Hudolph Wllhelm, Portland, 3 up' and 1!. E. J. Barker, Butte. defeated E. H. Hughes, Spokane. 4 up and 2. O. W. Potter, Seattle, defeated J. B. In-g-ersoU, Spokane, 5 up and 2. Kusssil Smith. Waverley, Portland, de feated J. J. Dempsey, Tacoma, 2 up and 1. Semi-tlnals, women's championships, IS holes: Miss Agnes Ford, Seattle, defeated Mrs. Georgrs H. Mayes, Waverley, 7 up and 5. Mrs. Robert Wilson, Seattle, defeated Mrs. T. B. Curran, Tacoma, S up and 2. Coast League Gossip rp HERE'S an Upps playing in a minor J. league in the East, and Jerry Downs Is still playing with the Seals, which shows that there are still Upps and Downs in baseball. ... San Francisco certainly Is strong on baseball pirit- Although the Oaks play a majority of their games there, all that they get from the blase fans is the marble mitt. It was even thus in 1912 when the Oaks won the pennant. A San Francisco writer, discussing one of the Oaks-Angels games last week, said: "What little interest there was in the Oaks early in the season now has entirely disappeared." How is that for the frigid fist? Plainly, the San Francisco fans are as strong for he Oaks as the Giants' fans are for Brooklyn. ... Keene, pitcher for the Salem team of the Inter-City League, will be given a trial by Portland on its next trip home The youngster has a great fast ball, and as he is a colleere man. is lust the type Walt McCredie is looking for. He plans on entering Oregon Agricultural College this Fall, and if he fails to make good with the Mackmen will cer tainly fill Bicky Williams' shoes for the Aggies next Spring. All of this Hugo Bezdek at the University of Oregon will regret. Keene already has had four years of high school at the Capital City besides one year in an Eastern college. Judge W. W. McCredie and Mrs. Mc Credie, Dr. and Mrs. Robert Wiswall, of Vancouver, Wash., and several others will hike for the Winona Hot Springs, near Eugene, as soon as the Beavers leave on their next road trip. The Portland magnate is one of the owners of the mud baths. If the roads are not too muddy, they will make the trip by automobile. The intention is to remain there until the Mackmen return home again. Judge McCredie has asked the Coast League magnates to hold their annual Fall gathering at the resort, for by that time the hotel and all the frills which go with a resort of that kind will be completed. It is thought that the convention will be held there. Losing ball teams, as a rule, are built on concrete foundations. The Philadelphia Athletics after their disastrous performances of late would lead one to believe that they could not beat any team. A few days ago they found one that they could trim, how ever. Connie Mack's crew stopped in Grand Rapids on an off day and played an exhibition game with Bill Essick's Central League team. It took Connie Mack's band 10 innings to beat the ag gregation of the former Portland pitch er, but It was done, by a score ol 2 to 0. ... Willie Mitchell, now with Detroit, and who nearly became a Beaver, re sents the idea that Guy Morton did such a wonderful feat with Cleveland when he struck out four Athletics in one in ning recently. Mitchell says that when he was with San Antonio he struck out eeven men in one inning, yet four of them scored. Outfielder Willie Zimmerman, whom Billy Lane beat out of a Job with Oak land, and who was turned back to Brooklyn and announced as turned over ts Toronto, haa been shifted to Hartford, in the Eastern League. ... Rowdy Klllott used Otis Crandall on the knoll again Wednesday and won from San Francisco, 8 to 0. From the frequency that Elliott la working Cran dall, one would imagine that Rowdy is trying to work the veteran out of the league. Tou know, 'tis said that Cran dal may be named manager of the Oaks, and maybe Rowdy Is looking after Rowdy's interests. Bill Lindsey, former Beaver thlrd sacker, released by Birmingham to make room for Tex McDonald, haa been acting as substitute umpire in the Southern League and may get a regu lar appointment. Jack Dalton Is back In the game with San Francisco and the Seals now expect to climb to the top. The San Fran cisco club haa installed mechanical an nouncers in Its park, similar to those that have been In use In the park: of the Chicago White Sox.
