EVENTS BROUGHT TO CLOSE
H. Ii. Everding Presents Rose to
Eacli Visitor or Competitor at
Kvents -Three Tropliy Events
j Shot Oir After Dinner.
T BT EARL R. GOODWIN.
The S2d annual trapshootnigr tourna
ment of the Sportsmen's Association of
the Northwest is now history and it
will go down as "some" affair in more
ways than one.
Frank M. Troeh, the sensational Van
couver, Wash., amateur, ended the tour
ney in a blaze of glory. He won the
main event, which was known as the
"For You a Rose in Portland Grows"'
contest yesterday at the Everding
traps of the Portland Gun Club, by
breaking- 98 of the 100 bluerocks thrown
for him.
The boy from across the Columbia
River also is heralded not only as the
leading amateur of the gathering, but
high gun of the tournament. Out of
400 registered targets, 381 of them
died the death of a rag doll by the un
canny accuracy of Mr.- Troeh.
II. E. Pottton Nearest Competitor.
The nearest competitor was H. E.
Poston, one of the popular San Fran
cisco professionals who followed, two
ttlrria in the rear.
The opening day of the Portland
Rose Festival was duly recognized at
th Everdlns Park traps .or tne Port
land Gun Club yesterday. The main
event was namejd after the 1916 slogan
malnlv because the Portland Rose
festival Association donated $100 in
rush to be divided among the winners.
To celebrate the occasion. H. R.
Everdinr. x-president of the Portland
Gun Club, had more than 20 dozen of
beautiful roses brought out to the
srrounds. and every contestant in the
100-taxget match had one pinned on
him for good luck. Practically all the
spectators, of whom there were almost
600, wore the favorite Portland Dioom.
Mr. Kvrrdlng Back at Springs.
. Mr. Everdlng has been ill and he
came to Portland from Shipherd's
Springs, Wash, expressly to witness
yesterday's conclave of blue rock
smashing. He returned to the Springs
last nlsrht.
Sensational scores were recorded in
the main event. The ambition of A.
W. Strowger, president of the local
club, and Henry R. Everdlng to have a
record-breaking entry list was ful
filled. -Just 101 men and women
stepped to the traps and. Just to im
press the fact that those present saw
some good shooting, it might be well
to state that 26 of them returned witn
80 per cent or better. All were ama
teurs, too, with four exceptions.
The troDhv events, three of them.
were what might be termed as "after
dinner shoots." It was not until, after
7:30 o clock last mgnc mai iiiuu win
ners in the sboot-offs could be deter
mined. The Northwest championship
cup, the Becker trophy and the three
men team race all found the nimrods
keyed up for almost anything.
After Frank M. Troeh, with 98 per
cent out of the 100 targets in the main
event, came Pete Whitney, a compara
tively new shooter in the game, be
longing to the Woodburn. Or., Gun Club
but hailing from Hubbard. Or., and Guy
Ugbers, of Pasco., Wash, with 96 out
of 100. H. E. Poston, of San Francisco,
led the pros with the same average re
corded by two second amateurs.
Les H. Reid, of Seattle, Wash., pulled
the unexpected yesterday. He broke
hut 87 targets in 100 tries, his regular
rnarkmnanship being around 95 per cent
end better. The five high amateurs
for the three days' gathering in the
regular registered birds only were
Frank H. Troeh, 381 out of 400; Peter
JL O'Brien, of Portland, 377; Abner
Blair, of Portland, 375; O. N. Ford, of
Kan Jose, Cal., 375, and Dr. R. N. Fuller,
of Los Angeles. 371. The five pros for
high honors were: H. K. Poston, San
Francisco, 379; P. J. Holohan, Portland,
S77; Les H. Reid, Seattle, 377; Frank
C. Riehl, Tacoma, 367, and Fred A.
Dryden, Spokane, Wash., 366.

SANTEJj MATCH IS SOUGHT
Jack Taylor Would Meet Bay CU7
Wrestler at Portland.
Jack Taylor, the Spokane heavy
weight wrestler, was in Portland
Tuesday and wants to settle his old
argument with Ad Santel, of San Fran
cisco, here. . Taylor took one fall from
Santel at the Bay City about a month
ago. The pair then proceeded to
wrestle until midnight, when the bout
was called a draw.
Taylor has left for Spokane, but ar
ranged with Manager Merrill, of the
Rose City Athletic Club, to come back
if the latter can get Santel to come to
Jortland - for the match. There is
great deal of rivalry between the two
exponents or the mat game, and the
match would draw a big house in San
Francisco. It will, no doubt, interest
me wrestling fans of Portland.
