A SUCCESS in' every way was the
luncheon given yesterday by the
current literature department "of
the Portland Woman's Club, which en
tertained In the Hotel Oregon. Seventy
one guests enjoyed the festivity. The
hostesses were Mesdames A. Tilzer, A.
Cleveland. Siegner, M. Baruh, J. M.
Reeves. Aldrich.'G. J. Frankel and Dr.
Lucy Wctters.
Ir. Watters read an interesting paper
on "The Literary Beauties of the Bible."
A letter from Mrs. M. A. Osden was
read. Mrs. Harry Chipman spoke on
'"Loyalty." Mrs. Whitton paid a trib
ute to Mrs. N. T.' Palmer, the retiring
chairman. Mrs. O. P. M. Jamison gave
a little toast and Mrs. J. Francis Drake
gave sidelights on the characteristics
of the members. Mrs. Donald Spencer
spoke for her mother, Mrs. D. M. Wat
son, the new chairman, who was absent
serving on an election board.
Mrs. Frankel made suggestions for
the future and Mrs. Palmer spoke of the
past year, thanking her co-workers for
their co-operation. Miss Charlotte
Steele, of St. Louis, was an honor guest.
The programme closed with a. song,
God Be With You 'Till We Meet
Again."
The installation of officers of the
r.ortland Woman's Club will be held
next Friday. It will be an open meet
ing. The annual meeting of the Alumnae
'Association of the University of Ore
gon will be held today with Mrs. 'Hor
ace Fenton, 421 Kast Twenty-fourth
ttreet South. Klection of officers will
- precede an informal social hour.
The Tapawingo Camp Fire Girls will
Rive an. entertainment tonight In
Hhaver School. "The Healing: Spring"
will be the title. The girls are con
nected with the Albina People's In

At a recent meeting of the adult
IBible class of the Methodist Church of
Lents, held at the home of Mrs. Daw
son, Mrs. Hollingsworth was elected
vice-president; Mrs. J. E. Hawken, sec
retary, and J. C. McGrew, treasurer.
These offices were filled as there were
vacancies in the organization. The
Xlev. w. L Wilson gave an address and
Mrs. Williams, of Millard-avenue Pres
byterian Church, gave a reading.
The annual meeting and election of
officers of the Sylvan Parent-Teacher
Associtaion was held Tuesday. Presi
dent, Mrs. R. A. Weidman; vice-president,
Mrs. Stevenson; secretary. Miss
Lillian Yokom; treasurer, Mrs. R. V.
Buckbee. Officers will be installed In
June. It was moved that the associ
ation take charge of the school picnic
June 6.
The entertainment committee of the
Maplewood Commercial Club gave a
big benefit in the new Trunk Factory
building last Friday night to raise
money to purchase a fire extinguisher
for the district. A big dance was given
after the regular entertainment, with
an old-fashioned minstrel show,.
Mrs. W. D. Wheelwright, chairman
of the cotton ball committee, reports
net returns of $750 for the needs of
Scadding. House. This institution for
homeless and down-and-out men
doesn't make expenses, as it gives a
pood meal for a nickel and a clean
bed: for 15 cents.
The board of directors of the Coun
cil of Jewish Women as well as the
f Portland Woman's Club Indorsed Mrs.
S. M. Blumauer for school director at
" a recent meeting. The members of the
council are working for her election.
The Woman's Association of the First
Presbyterian Church will hold an all
day session Tuesday in the church-
house.
Mrs. Charles R. Webber entertained
the members of the Fortnightly Club
with a delightful luncheon at her home
at 950 Hancock street on Monday. Of
ficers for the new year were elected
and a ' aeiighttul social time enjoyed.
Miss Helen Webber played a piano solo
and Mrs. s. B. Allen and Mrs. Robert
A. Bennett gave readings.

WOMEN FEAR "DOCTOR"
MOTHER CAUSES ARREST WHILE
DAIGHTER GOES TO HOSPITAL.
Patient Is Not Registered Because of
Alleged Threats Man Said to
Be Unlicensed Here.
The unwelcome attentions of "Dr."
Christopher Liscum caused Miss Violet
Cowins to conceal her presence at Good
Samaritan Hospital, where she was
taken on May 15 to be treated for ap
pendicitis. At the request of her
mother, Mrs. Dora B. Cowins, 673
Gilsan street, the daughter was not
registered, as are other patients.
Miss Cowins, who is 20, was operated
on for appendicitis several days ago,
and now is recovering.-. She is said to
be extremely nervous, however, with
dread of Liscum's threats. Mrs. Co-
wins, the mother, declares that Liscum
told her not to call another doctor, or
he would shoot her.
It was the alarm that this and simi
lar remarks occasioned, which Mrs.
Cowing says caused her to demand po
lice protection when Miss Liscum be
came so ill that ner removal to me
hospital was necessary. The young
woman was escorted by Patrolman
Tully and Morris, of the motorcycle
sauad. Liscum. it is asserted, later
alarmed Mrs. Cowins by appearing at
the home and this was why he was ar
rested Thursday night.
Both mother and daughter declared
that Liscum's services never have been
sought, and that his presence in their
home was undesirable to them. It is
believed that jealous infatuation for
the young woman prompted the threats
he is said to have made.
It is said at Good Samaritan Hospital
that Liscum has no accepted standing
as a physician, and is not licensed to
practice.

Portland Chamber Plans Reception of
Visitors.- Who Will Be Taken
Over. City While Here.
Five hundred men will drive to Port
land from The Dalles in 100 automo
biles. Thursday, May 25, to give the
citizens here an ocular demonstration
of the fact that the Columbia High
ay is open clear through to The
Dalles, and that there is no longer any
need for ferryng across the Columbia
this side of that place. ,
The touring committee mt the Cham
ber cf Commerce will head the recep
tion committee -for the visitors, in
whose party will be the city officials
of The Dalles, the Commissioners of
Wasco County and many other promi
ment men from that district.
S. BenKon will meet the visitors at
Benson Park and pilot them into the
city. The Mayor of Portland and his
Commissioners .md the County Com
missioners of Multnomah, will meet the
party at the city limits and escort it
inside the city limits.
The Bast Side Business Men's Club
will give a-demonstration in honor of
the party at Grand avenue, and cross
ing the Broadway bridge, the visitors
will parade the streets and be taken
to the Chamber of Commerce, where a
welcome programme will be held. At
night they will be guests of the Cham
ber at the Hippodrome.
On Friday -morning they will be
taken for a trip along the principal
scenic boulevards of the city. They
will drive back to The Dalles later in
the day.
PAVING WAR ON AGAIN
Montague O'Keilly Company Bids
$1.23 for Bltulithic.
Paving war broke out again yester
day when Montague O'Reilly Company
submitted a bid of 11.23 a square yard
for standard .bitulithic pavement to be
laid ore East Glisan street from Kast
Seventy-fifth street to East Eighty-
seventh street. This unusually low
price came after a war of several
months ago which dragged the price
down as low as $1.15 a yard, and then
abated and let the price soar back up
to 1.43 a yard.
A few months ago the bitulithic
prices got down to bedrocK. Then a
rate war, which, w:aa reported, to have

Confidence in L, D. Roberts, princi
pal of the Holman School, who is
charged with assault and battery in
the punishment of a pupil, Meyer
Brown, is expressed in a letter received
by the School Board from 100 pupils
of the school. The letter, which is ad
dressed to the School Board and others
it may concern, follows:
"We, the undersigned students of
Holman School, take this means of
expressing sympathy for our principal,
L. D. Roberts, and regret his present
trouble over the punishment of one of
our number.
"We would Uso have it known that
we have found Professor Roberts con
siderate, fair aid Just in his manner
toward us. and that we have confidence
In him."
SON ATTACKS SIRE'S WILL
Frank M. Taylor Alleges Delusion in
Creating Orphan Fund.
In a suit filed in the Circuit Court
by Frank M. Taylor in an attempt to
set aside the will of his father, J. M.
Taylor, the assertion is made that the
latter was suffering from an insane
delusion at the time he made the will.
Defendants in the action are Clara
L. Broughton and O. W. Taylor, sister
and brother or the pralntlff; George
H. Weise and O. W. Taylor, executors
Charles C. Spencer, worshipful mas
ter . of Multnomah Lodge No. 1,
Masons, of Oregon City, and L. Adams.

ths First Congregational Church of
Oregon City.
The J. M. Taylor estate is valued at
$6735. The will provides for a trust
fund for widows and orphans.
ROSARIANS TO GO UP RIVER
Portland Will Join In Booster Sat
at Oregon City.
The Royal Rosarians will partici
pate in full uniform in the celebration
of the Oregon City Rose Show and
Booster day, Saturday, May 27. The
steamer Grahamona has been chartered
to take the party from Portland to.
Oregon City.
They will leave here at 12:3081
reach Oregon. City in time to partici
pate in the parade at 2 o'clock. The
Rosarian band will give a concert foi
lowing the parade.
Arrangements have been made to
have the drill squad out in the parade,
and the Rosarians will be out in full
force, just as they will appear In the
Rose Festival in June. The round
trip fare to Oregon City will be 50
cents.
