Chairman of Handicap Committee
Says It Is Desire to Accommo
date Southerners for Flans
Set Ijast of July.
BY" ROSCOE FAWCETT.
Owing to an urgent request from the
California golfing contingent, the dates
for tb Post-Western golf tournament
slated for the latter part of July on the
Waverley course may be shifted.
C. IL Davis. Jr., chairman of the
handicap committee, received a tele
gram yesterday from 'jack Neville, of
the California Golf Association, beg
ging Waverley to postpone Its dates
one week.
The Western championships will be
held at Del Monte, July 17-22, and
Waverley had decided upon July 24-29
as the best dates for the bis event here.
Chairman Davis fears that postpon
ing his tournament one full week will
result in the loss of a. great many of
the Eastern entries, who may not have
ime to remain over that long. For this
reason he may decide to make the Post-
Western a four-day affair, beginning
on Wednesday, July 26. and lasting
through to Saturday night. July 29.
'We desire to accommodate the han
Francisco crowd, if possible." said Mr.
Davis yesterday. "Mr. Neville, In his
telegram, asked that we postpone our
dates because of arrangements for the
entertainment of the Del Monte con
tingent in San Francisco on July 23 and
24. If we postpone until July 26 this
should satisfy them. Players could
leave Pan Francisco Monday nifcht and
reach Portland early W ednesday morn
ing in time for the qualifying rounds.
'It will make it doubly hard on tne
committee, of course. vV e expect to
have between 150 and 200 entries for
this event and it is going to be ome
task condensing this into four days
play."

CHICAGO. May. 12. Mike Collins,
manager of Fred Fulton, said tonight
he had telegraphed an offer of $-".000
to Jess Willard for a 10-round contest

Collins said he would post $5000 An

Willard make a favorable reply. He
said the Hudson arena could soon be
made to seat 15.000 spectators.
Although the post-Western tourna
ment somewhat overshadows the Ors-
gon State golf champlonsJiipa from
I'aciflc Coast standpoint, tremendous
interest Is being evinced in the annual
classic.
The state titular events will be held
over the Waverley course, June 5-1C
Rose Festival week. Entries already
are coming in to the committee.
Salem, Medford, Eugene, Astoria, I
Baker and cities in Washington and
British Columbia are expected to send
their cracks. The Portland Golf Club
undoubtedly will have between 20 and
0 entries. Tualatin will send in seven
or eight.
The Oregon championship is an open
event, players from outside the state
being eligible.
Today there will be the regular
weekly competition on both the Waver
ley and the Portland courses. At
waverley Chairman Davis has sched
uled four ball matches, two players on
a side using three-quarters of their
combined handicaps as team handicap.
The two low pairs will play for the
trophy during the following week.
At the Portland Club most of the
class will be missing, as the Portl&nd
Club team leaves today for Eugeno to
tackle the Eugene Country Club bunch
tomorrow. Those who remain at home
will engage in a ball sweepstakes or
some similar competition.
Sam B. Archer decided yesterday that
some suitable trophy should be offered
as prize in the Portland-Eugene inter-
club match. After scurrying around
bit Chairman Archer made arrange
ments for a beautiful trophy. This is
now on display at the Hcltkemper
store.
The Portland Club will take close to
30 players to Eugene, a majority ol
whom will leave at 8:25 this morning in
a special car on the Oregon Electric,
arriving in Eugene at noon.
