MIICAGO, April 20. i-ecret confer thingr about Jess 'Willard'a mental at titude that is going to be a great help to him in the future as far as his ring ability is concerned. He does not con aider that he knows it all. Quite the contrary. Just now he is figuring on a pleasant Summer with Frank (Jo ten, world's champion wrestler, as a teammate, tie doesn't know Gotch personally, but has heard so much about him that lie an ticipates getting along all right with the Joint star with the circus. "There's a thing in wrestling that I'm FOing to learn all about before I f.t through with Gotch and the circus next Summer," Jess said on the" way back from the New York fight, "and that is the thing they call leverage. "Wrestling to Be Studied. "I've heard a whole lot about it, but nver was intimate enough with any first-class wrestler who could explain it to me. No, no, don't run away with the im pression that I have any ambition to become a wrestler. I tried this game more than once, and there is a funny fctory connected with it that I'll let get in print some time. Thi3 is the idea I have in mind. There are certain principles about wrestling that might eaMlv be aoDlied to boxing. "I ve been thinking this over, and aince training for the lloran battle have t ome to the conclusion that a man who has a clear idea about this leverage thing can make it a matter of immense benefit in his boxing, especially when straight rules are used and you are supposed to protect yourself at all times. "Leverage in wrestling is the trick of Veeping your opponent constantly off balance, the meantime you applying your weight In such a wiy that it is next to impossible for your opponent tr regain his balance and apply any loroe to you. "Can't you see where a knowledge of such tricks would be of great help to a boxer, especially In the clinches? Late ly I have been trying to master the old trick of keeping a ring opponent off his balance by little jabs and pushes like Joe Gans used to be a master of. tack Johnson had this department o the pame down to a stage where it was little short of a science. "As a matter of fact I think the col ored boxers of the world have proved even greater students of such fine points than have the whites, especially when one consdera that the whites out number the blacks by a large majority. Ehrman & Co. and Allen & Lewis failed to gain admittance to the Commercial Baseball League at Wednesday eight's meeting of the di rectors. If the clubs were let in it would necessitate that the season which "nds in July be stretched out until the middle of August. The original eight managers thought that the season would therefore be too long. A special shoot has been arranged for the Portland Gun Club traps at Everding Park Sunday. It will be a bird-handicap affair, 50 bluerocks to each contest. II. This can be easily realized if you will rause long enough to remind yourself that Hal Chase. Vean Gregg, Joe Cor bett, Duffy Lewis. Roger Pecktnpaugh. Ivor Olson, Oscar V'itt, Harry Heilmann Coast League Gossip. and a flock of others aet fire to the majors without much experience on the Coast. The fame of Speed Martin, Louis Guisto, Ray Bates and Lefty Fittery already is known in the upper circles of baseball. Any of these four brilliant prospects could get chances in the big ehow immediately, but, of course, their managers are going to stand pat and hold onto their lads as long as they cau. Men like McGraw, Mack, Jennings and in fact all of the other major league generals are willing to take chances with live youngsters. These main cogs of the most important ma chines in the country gamble on a youngster who may develop and boost the box office receipts. Manager Jennings, of Detroit, and Wild Bill Donovan, of the Yankees, are willing, in fact anxious, to give Ham Patterson, of the Tigers, a tidy sum of money for Ray Bates. Donovan is willing to add a couple of players in the barter. Patterson will not listen to either one. If Rowdy Elliott, of the Oaks, will part with Speed Martin he can enrich the Oakland coffers several thousand dollars and get another man in ex change from McGraw or Mack. Rowdy Is a standpatter. It is said that members of the Ean Francisco team are having trouble in distinguishing Jack Coffey from Har ry woiverton. When the members or the team can't tell them apart, it's a cinch that they must appear allke to tne tans, in civilian clothes tney are not hard to tell apart, but it is said to be different when each has donned a uniform. Coffey's hair is the same iron gray shade as Wolverton's. Jack Is not as stocky a man as is his employer, but when he dons the uniform his appear ance is deceptive indeed. The eagerness with which the great est authorities in the game are going after Coast League youngsters is a live sign that the Coast League la the most Important baseball organization in America, barring, of course, the Na tional and American outfits. The year 191t finds more Coast Leaguers than ever starring in the two major cir cuits, ahd If present indications count, the year 1917 is sure to shatter the 1916 mark. The regular weekly bulletin was out yesterday: Deschutes River, North Junction River clear and going; down rapidly. I4gh t wind and weather warm. Unless radical change, fih:ng Saturday and Fund ay will be first class. Not mi' ny large catches yet and salmon (lies car not be looked f or until there la warm weather tor a couple of weeks. Ieachutes Station -Parties going out from here caught :0 zinc 10 -loch trout with brown and dark flies. Bend. Or. Messrs. Fred Fish and Ralph Pondexter caught tfO speckled trout In the Deschutes that averaged about three pounds each. Astoria Gray hackle fly has proved luck in south fork of Clatskanie. One man caught 54 trout, all more than seven inches long, and another caught 67. Spoon hook is being used in north fork of Clats- kanle. Water too high and cold to use rites in this creek. trharles H umphrey caught four steelheads and some trout with spoon. Plenty of salmon eight miles from Astoria. Others making fine catches daily. Klickitat River Party of five fished up the Klickitat from I-yle and caught a lot of rainbows weighing from five to 12 pounds. Deschutes Fiver, Mecca River still muddy. Fishing not good. Last few days warm weather will probably cause higher water.
