TUT. MORXINO OREGONIATf. WEDNESDAY, ArKIfc 5, 1916. 15 GRAPPLERS DELAY CHOICE OF REFEREE Butler, Acton, Grant or Smith Likely to Be Third Man on x.. Mat Friday Night. VANCE IN FINE CONDITION Seattle Athletic Club Wrestling Instructor Gives His "Version, of v Impromptu Bout With Kddie O'Connell .Four Years Ago. ddj O'Connell and Frank Vance will choose a referee for their match Friday night fxl the Rose City Ath letic Club at a conference with the club officials Thursday afternoon. Mike H. Butler, Joe Acton, Jack Grant and Bud Smith, of Vancouver, Wash., are the most prominently mentioned. It is thought that Butler will be the final selection. Vance has written here that anyone who is not a personal friend of O'Con nell will do. In another letter from Vance received yesterday he says that he is in great shape and weighs 158 pounds. Several Seattle Athletic Club men will accompany him here. The boxing preliminaries to the Vance-O'Connell affair are creating considerable interest. The main boxing event will be between Muff Bronson and Jack Kaye at 125 pounds. Hoscoe Taylor will make his debut to local fandom for the first time in sev eral years. Taylor boxed here a num ber of times when the 10-round game was in vogue. He can hit'and is ag gressive. Jack Allen, the pride of the Kenton stockyards, will be his op ponent. They will weigh around 140 pounds. Frankie Warren and Joe Fredericks, featherweights, will mix in the curtain-raiser. Vance Olves Vemlon. Vance's version of the impromptu match between O'Connell and Vance, which took place at the Spokane Ama teur Athletic Club four years ago, is interesting. O'Connell was there with his wres tling team from the Multnomah Club, and Vance had the Seattle representa tives entered in the Pacific Northwest Association boxing and wrestling championships, which were staged at the Inland Kmpire city that year. Vance and O'Connell had long been enemies, as they were the class of the erapplers in the Northwest, but never could be brought together. The following letter tells Vance's Btory. Here is part of Vance's letter; On the preceding nijcht one of my boys from Seattle was entered in the 143-pound class in the Pacific Northwest Association championships and drew one of the Mult nomah Club boys as his first opponent. At the two contestants cam a to the center of the mat O'Connpll called his pupil to atch out for the ami lock and roll, as that was all Vance's men knew. ' I called to my man to beat him with that hold, and had no soonar had the words out of my mouth when my man threw his opponent and won the match. The next morning- after breakfast we all went over to the club for a while, and - we decided to play a little pool. We were playing about a half an hour to make 15 points, when Eddie and his boys earn in. My boy started to ''kid' the Multnomah boy about being beaten so easy after his Instructor had warned him to watch out for my famous hold, and mentioned the, : far-t that it showed who had the better instructor. O'Connell jumped up and wanted to make a bet he could beat me for any thing from a nickel to $1000. Match Is Hard One. The boys argued for a while, and I just la ughed at them and told O'Connell to got himself in shape and then J would wreHtle him. I told him that I did not need a rub to go out and heat him and advised him to come up on the gymnasium floor when he was in good shape. After about 3 0 minutes he came up, looking line as a fiddle, lie looked as fit as he usually does. O'Connell showed no symptoms of any se rious injury except for a slight nervou- ' mss. I confess I was a. little that way ! myself. We started in both a little cau- ttons and not taking any chances. I finally slipped tho arm lock and roll on poor Eddie, but his feet were off the i mat and ho could not bridge very success- 1 fully, so I let him up. I We took the standing position again, j F-drtio was real peeved and started his roucrh j work again, and then I saw that It was j his Intention to injure me if possible. I j waa crippled, anyway, having a bad arm I and nerve injured in the back of the eighth 1 vertebra. I was In no shape to bridge, for! tt hurt me whenever I put my head back. I was watching his every move, and was determined to get top position if possible. I I tried for his legs and missed, and was ! under. He bad me in a position where 1 he could easily get a body scissors, as I i kpew It was his best hold and knew how he used it from working with him In a friendly workout a year ago or so previous. He slipped his leg hold across me, and in an Instant I had my so-called "freak toe hold, and after ho refused to give up and caliefl me a few "pet" names I put more pressure on the hold until his ankle broke. Me claims he had a bad knee or something like that, but It was a case of too mucn toe hold, and don't you forget it. I'll beat him again Friday- night. NEGROES ALL VETERANS Arter Game "With Intcr-City Club l-'oster's Men Mill Tour North west and Take on Teams of Class II Circuit. - Portland fans will get their annual Spring glimpse at the Chicago Colored Giants tomorrow afternoon at Recrea tion Park, Twenty-fourth $nd Vaughn streets, when they play an exhibition game with the Bably Beavers, of the Inter-City Baseball League. The local enthusiasts did not see the Ethiopians last Spring because of rain. The negro chaps walloped the Uni versity of Oregon nine, 11 to 0, yester day afternoon at Eugene, play the Ore gon Aggies at Corvallis today, and will arrive in Portland tonight. They broke even in a four-game series with the Beavers at Sacramento. Rube Foster has the nucleus of the team which has been successful for the past sereral seasons. The Giants have been playing in Cuba all Winter, and the Baby Beavers and the North western League clubs who will meet them in turn will be lucky 4f they win a game from them. When they are in shape the negroes are better than most any minor league team in the United States, and they beat a lot of major league clubs, so they will give the young men of the North west a real tryout. Rube has some good pitchers and, as his team was treated rather rudely by Northwestern League clubs last year, he is coming this Spring to show them a touch of real class. The black boys will play Tacoma. Seattle, eight games with Vancouver and perhaps some of the other Northwestern League clubs before grabbing a "rattler" for the Middle states. The negroes are a big attraction wVierexer they go. Clyde J. "Red" Rupert, manager of the West Side "Baby Beavers," will pit his regular lineup against the South erners. He will be weakened by the loss of "Red" Watts, shortstop, who left this week to join the Spokane In dians. The prospective batting orders for tomorrow's game, which will start at 3 o'clock, are: Chicago Colored Giants Petway. catcher: Hili. center field; Duncan, right field; Lloyd, shortstop; Grant, first base; Ganz, left field; Fran cis, third base; Bauchman, second base; Dixon, Washington or Foster, pitcher. Baby Beavers Ripple, third base; Hutt, second base; Groce. center field; Ingles, shortstop; Blanchard. first base; Lind, left field; Peterson, rifflit field: Feich-ting-er or White, catcher; Heiman, pitcher.
