THE aiOTtXrXG- OKECJONIAX WEDNESDAY, MARCH 2J. 1016. y. fil C. A. TO STIR UP CIVIC PRIDE it is important that the T. M. C. A. of KELLY BUTTE TO BE IN BARE OF SHERIFF Portland shall be sustained in the work it is doing for this city. It is housing, feeding and directing & host of young men along the road to good citizen ship. "These men are constantly being sent out from the institution to fill their places in the world. A steady stream of men must be secured to take their places. This is the season when we try to fill up the ranks. "We hope that, beginning this morn ing, every citizen will get busy. Use the telephones or the mails, or in some way land a few applications for the Y. Af. C. A." Carl Reiter, manager for the Orpheum Theater, lunched with the working teams yesterday and kept the tables in an uproar with a string of inimitable stories. THE ENTIRE FAMILY USES Seattle Again Wins in Contest for Members, but Teams ' Are Not Discouraged. Quarters Will Be Renovated and Exemplary Prisoners Will Receive Small Pay. r 45 MORE ARE ENROLLED Appeal to Be Made to Business Men V Suggest to Employes Value of Training and Association Offered by Y. M. C. A. RESULTS OF S ECOMJ DAY'S MANHUIVT BY PORTLAND AXD SEATTLE Y. M. C. A. ORGA.Mi!ATIO.S. Seattle 35 men. 45 boys, $565.50 73,325 points. Portland 28 men, 17 boys, $360.50 47,250 points. Effort is to be made today to arouse the pride of Portland in the great "manhood factory" at Sixth and Taylor Streets. The appeal is to be directed toward the homes of the city and to the men of the city to make use of the Young Hen's Christian Association. It is to be made to Jews and Gen tiles, to Protestants and to Catholics. It is hoped to reach every man who believrs that clean manhood is an asset for the future of Portland. Yesterday was another victory for Seattle in the contest with I'ortland for memberships in the Y. M. C. A. or ganizations of both cities. After today the week will be half gone and Port land is not even well started toward the goal. ExpertM to Be Employed. The last half of the week, however. Is to be devoted to a campaign by ''regular salesmen." General Wood ward yesterday visited a number of the big business firms of the city, and they have agreed to send some of their most expert salesmen to handle the latter part of the campaign. Through these experts it is expected that the campaign will take a sudden jump for ward. Today at noon Rabbi Jonah S. Wise Is to speak at the Y. M. C. A. on why the people of the Hebrew race are in terested and benefited by the organi zation. He will point out that the largest contributor to the Y. M. C. A. In the United States is a Jew. Yesterday, the birthday of a prom inent Catholic, the canvassers were welcomed to his office and a check drawn to pay "for two boys' member ships in the Y. 51. C. A. Wcrleln Wolmeea in Lead. "I belfeve in the work of the T. M. C. A. Just pass those on to a couple of hoys whose parents cannot afford to pay for them." lie said. The Werlein team. "The "Woimceas," won the contest yesterday with 25.600 points, against 21.600 points scored by the "Du Plunx." commanded by Colonel O. W. Davidson. The total number of men's and boys' applications secured for the day was 4 5. '- ""What Is needed now is an arousing of civic pride." said E. Tj. Thompson, a director for the Y. M. C. A. "If the business men of this city will today take the time to suggest to those employes whom they know will bene fit by the connection that the Y. M. C. A. courses of study and its associations should be secured by them, the battle will be won. "The average employe needs just that ort of a boost from his employer. He needs the knowledge that his employer Is interested in his future. T. M. C. A. Reference Valuable. - "It works both ways. The employer rets better service and the employe makes himself a better and more valu able man." It developed, as a result of the noon day meeting yesterday, that many of the business houses of the city are giving preference to employes who are able to give the Y. M. C. A. as refer ence. The efficiency expert for one of the biggest iron and steel plants on the Pacific Coast stands for Y. M. C. A. boys against the untrained applicant. When he hires a young man as a com mon laborer at the plant the "boss" gives the suggestion that he should enroll at the Y. M. C. A. night school. If the boy is not ambitious enough to take advantage of the opportunity the boss does not want him. "It is this situation which leads us to ask today that every man in Port land lend a hand in this campaign," urged General W. F. Woodward. "It is not so important that Portland shall defeat Seattle in the contest, but DARKEN YOUR GRAY HA R Look Young: All Your Gray Hair Changed to an Even Dark Shade by Q-Ban 'Harmless No Dye. On recommendation of Sheriff Hurl burt, made directly after acceptance of the responsibility for the city and county prisoners sent to the rockpile, the County Commissioners yesterday decided to allow the prisoners 15 cents a day for meritorious work and con duct. This is to obviate the necessity of the convicts returning to old criminal pursuits the day they are released. Incentive for AVork Provided. Some incentive is necessary to make the men do a fair amount of work on the rockpile. Sheriff Hurlburt pointed out and the sum offered, even though small is expected to furnish that. W. L. Lightner, chairman of the board, approved of the plan of Sheriff Hurlburt, but spoke of the necessity of keeping in mind the fact that the men were sent to the rockpile for punish ment and that things should not be made too easy, or compensation too liberal, for them. "Slackers'" will not be paid. Commis sioner Holman said that the men should understand that the money would not be paid for mere desultory labor, but was intended as a bonus for good work, and exemplary conduct. Mr. Eatchcl to Remain. The money for the operation of Kelly Butte is paid from the road fund of the county. Superintendent W. A. Eatchel will remain in charge of the reck quarries, but the prison will be under the supervision of Sheriff Hurl burt. The prison houses are badly in need of paint, said Sheriff Hurlburt yester day, after a trip of inspection, and the prisoners' quarters will be renovated this week. Sheriff Hurlburt will take charge of the commissary and see that the men receive good, wholesome food. "I'm not going to buy job lots' of meat at low prices, that is slightly tainted, in any effort to economize," announced the Sheriff. Rheumatism Is easier to avoid than to cure, states a well-known authority. We are advised to dress warmly; keep the feet dry; avoid exposure; eat lesa meat, but drink plenty of good water. Rheumatism is a direct result of eating too much meat and other rich foods that produce uric acid which is absorbed into the blood. It is th function of the kidneys to filter this acid from the blood and cast It out in the urine; the pores of the skin are also a means of freeincr the blood of this impurity. In damp and chilly cold weather the skin pores aro closed thus forcing the kidneys to do double work, they become weak and slugglsn and fail to eliminate the uric acid which keeps accumulating and circu lating through the system, eventually settling in the joints and muscles causing stiffness, soreness and pain called rheumatism. At the first twinge of rheumatism get from any pharmacy about four ounces of Jad Salts; put a tablespoon ful in a glass of water and drink before breakfast each morning for a week. This is said to eliminate uric acid by stimulating the kidneys to normal ac tion, thus ridding the blood of these impurities. Jad Salts Is inexpensive, harmless and is made from the acid of grapes and lemon Juice, combined with lithia and is used with excellent results by thou sands of folks who are subject to rheu matism. Here you have a pleasant effervescent lithia-water drink which helps overcome uric acid and is bene ficial to your kidneys as well. Adv.
