The Board of County Commissioners in session Monday declared an emer gency to exist at the Klona-Benton bridge and ordered the construction of two steel span approaches, one 85 feet long and, th other 60 feet long. These are to replace the wooden approaches that are swinging in a dang-rous man ner, caused by an ice Jam in the Yakima River at that point. The approaches will b 18 feet wide in the clear. The cost has been set at 14600. Be cause of the danger it was deemed ad visable to order the work without the delay in calling for uids. The nriage Is on the Inland Empire Highway and was built in tho early '90. New con crete abutments were built four years ago. and the steel spans will rest their outer ends on those. . YAKIMA PROTECTS WATER Overchutea Will Carry Drainage Over Wapatox Canal. NORTH YAKIMA, Wash., Feb. 9. (SDecial.) The Pacific Power & Light Coinoanv has authorized expenditure of 11500 for improving and adding ad ditional overchutes on tne wapatox Canal. These overchutes are for the pur pose of carrying drainage water over the canal, ana tnus preventing pollu tion of the city water supply at North Yakima. The overchutes are lined with gal vanized metal, and concrete wing dams are built abov the canal so that water coming down ravines will be collected Into th chutes.
