SETBACK iS BRIEF
Wheat Only Slightly Affected
by German Relations.
GAIN AT CLOSE-ONE CENT
Market Is Stimulated by Higher
Cable Quotations and Renewed
Fear of Damage to Do
mestic Winter Crop.
CHICAGO, Feb. 4. Notwithstanding a
temporary break which resulted from word
that Germany would not admit any illegal
itv In the sinking of the Lusitania, thn
wheat market today scored a substantial
advance, chiefly because of unexpectedly
higher cable quotations and owing to in
creased apprehension of damaee to the do
mestic Winter crop. Prices cloned steady Ht
a net gain of lc, with May $1.34 and Julv
91.2.1 'A. Other leading staples, loo. all
showed an upturn corn "54c to 4-tc;
oats, Hs to Uc and provisions 5c to 10c.
Chances of a severance of relations be
tween the Vnited States and Germany were,
responsible for a transient decline of lsc
a bushel in the value of wheat. Previous
gains, however, were not entirely wiped out
and within an hour the market had rallied
in a vigorous manner. Advice telling of
fair export sales at the seaboard tended tt
help the bulls. The total of this European
business was estimated at 750.000 bushels.
Including a considerable amount of flour
taken by the government of Holland.
Corn and oats were bulllshly affected by
the wheat strength. Car shortage reports
were numerous, but cash handlers generally
look for larger receipts here.
Higher prices on hogs gave firmness lo
provisions. One of the feature of the mar
kat was the purchase of 1,000,000 pounds of
May lard. The transaction waa said to be to
cover recent speculative short sales.
