Damage Will Be High. Estimates of the aggregate dam age dorfe by tho storm are inaccessible and incomplete. It is certain, how ever, that many thousands of dollars will not meet the total loss. Stately shade trees that have graced the residence portions of the city, the public parks and the 6treets are shattered under the weight of the icy coats formed by the recent silver thaw. Ice formed on telephone and elec tric service roles caused scores of these poles ta break off. Weeks will be required in replacing them.' Thone Service Impaired. 'Hundreds of telephone connections are broken. The entire district north of Hawthorne avenue and east of East Thirty-fourth street is without elec tric service. The substation at East Sixtieth street has been put out of commission. Street railway traffic is slow and uncertain and in some parts of the city actually danperous. The Port land Railway, Lifht & Tower 'Com pany kept most cf its lines open most of the day and durinjf part of the night, but has notified its patrons that it cannot guarantee service over any of its lines. Unless business demands are most urgent, people are advised to stay at heme today. School In all part of Portland are elosrd and will remain closed until af ter denser from tangled wlrea Is re moved and normal transportation fa cilities are restored. Faaerale Arc Poatpoaed. The atorm even has suspended burial services In the cemeteries. Under takers' wagons are unablo to reach the cemeteries. Many funerals have of consequence been postponed. What makes thla situation doubly bad la th fact that Tortland Is utterly unprepared to sueet It and Is doing Ut ile to counteract the storm's effects. Streets tn tho businex dixtrlct that have been hub deep with snow for nearly a week now are almost Impaas able. The. city atreet-cleanlnsj depart ment, so far as Its activity In that di rection haa been manifested, is bliss fully ignorant that the streets are in nerd of attention. The city authorities rave some tardy recognition to these conditions yester day by votinc an appropriation to pro vide for immediate removal of snow and siueh from tho street In the business districts.
